For this to be playable, I think you'd need to squeeze at least 3 spells in. Although it's obviously worse than Monastery Mentor and Young Pyromancer, unlike its peers it can actually tangle in combat on its own. The tokens can also hole equipments like Swords really effectively. Is this playable at maybe 540 or 720? Doesn't seem too bad imo.
Seems like a worse Talrand, Sky Summoner. The 1/5 body is better than the 2/2, but a 2/2 token is SO much better than the 1/1 that I think Talrand has a significant edge. And he already isn't good enough. So no, I don't think this makes it, even in large cubes.
I've never used Taldaram, but I was always under the assumption with Taldaram that the main issue was the small body being easy to remove with cheap removal like burn? Or is the upside of spawning such huge creatures so quickly too much better to run this card?
This guy is probably going to shine in an uncommon cube. The comparison to Talrand, Sky Summoner is fair. I personally think this might not be as bad as it looks. Control decks will get a threat and defensive body together. A 1/5 is so much harder for aggro to kill than a 2/2. Of course Talrand, Sky Summoner makes 2/2's but I am okay with slow down my clock on them if I have inevitability. In more grindy matchups I can see this guy falling short. I think its a toss up between the two, but overall the power level is not here for a powered cube
If you really like spells decks (like me) I can see playing this in the ~630 range. The problem is competition. In blue alone for just the spells deck, Thing in the Ice, Talrand, and probably Docent of Perfection are all better. As a 3 mana 1/4 or 2 mana 0/2 I would be on this. I've played Talrand more than most and it plays out usually late game where you have mana up to gain immediate free 2/2s. This is sturdy, which is great, but I really don't want to tap out on turn 4 for a 1/5 blocker.
I like this a lot more than Talrand. In the decks that are going to try this kind of thing, surviving is the main concern, and 1/5s are great for that. Sure, birds aren't drakes, but a 1/5 will actually survive to make a few tokens where a 2/2 wouldn't. This is edge-case cubable in a list like mine, so it may or may not make it, but it is good enough.
