Hey look, a Merlin! I like this guy. Early/mid-game body to fend off aggro, ability to draw buttloads of cards late game, and some extra spice to all your cantrips and interaction. I'll give this guy a shot!
If you are pushing blue devotion with god of the sea and what not I like it there otherwise triple blue is too much. With flash, we would be talking. Or maybe if it could tap lands with blue sells that could be fun.
Blue and green deal with triple pip mana costs better than the Mardu colors. As far as I'm concerned, Blue Devotion is a trap archetype in which the payoff is worth the deckbuilding constraints. Until we get more support at least.
Seems a bit middle of the road for me. There's no shortage of blue value spells, and UUU really hurts since it's already rubbing shoulders with Vedalken Shackles / Cryptic Command / Cavalier of Gales. This not triggering on any instant / sorcery really hurts since a good chunk of blue's instants are counters.
Cubeable card, but nothing spectacular, especially in the color with the most competition.

Am i misreading what you are saying? this does trigger off all the counter spells in blue, but it also triggers off the creatures and enchantments as well.
I don't think this is necessarily a slam dunk, but I don't think the card is bad at all. I can see some mid-sized cubes that want to give the opposition deck a little more love running this.

Tapping something is proactive, where countering is reactive. You want to tap the opponent down during the upkeep/before attackers, which you probably won't be able to do since your instants will be counterspells.
It's fine. It's kinda surprising it took us this long to get a Braingeyser creature. All in all, I see this as playable, but without an enormous amount to recommend it. I'd happily play this if I open it, and I'd happily leave it out otherwise.
The tap bit adds a lot of value to the card, but honestly it would still be fine without it. As long as you are paying anything for X, you are getting a decent deal.
I like this card a lot with a devotion support package... As it's still "ok" without being mono blue devotion.
Card is pretty solid imo, but it's certainly narrow and it's in the most competitive color.
Don't think I'd test this in my powered cube, but If I make a modern cube with a devotion package, I definitely would there.
The floor of X=0 is surprisingly good, considering how awsome it is when you are in a board state to cast it for 5.
With both a UUU and a BBB card spoiled, and we are confirmed going back to theros, I think devotion is near certain to return. Revisiting that mechanic for cube may be something to worth paying attention to if the payoffs in new theros are there.

This is a shrewd observation. Devotion may indeed be about to emerge as a more worthwhile consideration.

Comparing it to braingeyser, it's obvious that this card is much better. For an extra U mana you get a 3/3 on board with an ability (and can be bounced to recast it), easily worth more than "draw a card".
Also can be bounced with karakas to draw more cards!

Agreed, and the heavy mana cost hybrid cards also seem to point to the Theros return of Devotion. I like the mechanic and would be pleased to see some payoffs.
As it stands I think this competes slightly poorly with Cavalier of Gales and the other CCC stuff, but I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for trying it. Halfway decent X scaleable creatures have precedent for being pretty good in cube.
Cards with baked in modality almost always play better than they look. This Guy can come down at any point in the game and help you get the lost mana efficiency out of your hand. Gadwick is no all star, but I’m guessing he’ll be a solid workhorse for me at 540z
