My friend Phillip lovingly mocks me for always drafting the Golgari “sock full of batteries” deck (I don’t even know what that means), but this card will be an all-star in that archetype.
You generally have 1-2cc recursive creatures that you utilize for value, and high end that benefits from various synergies. This card lets you bridge the gap between mid to lategame by grabbing key interaction when you need it (Rec Sage and Chupacabras), and your one lategame bomb (hopefully it’s a Grave Titan).
It is nice that this is a 3/3 or 4/4, but that’s not the most exciting part of this card for me.
Often in the green ramp deck, the deck ramps into nothing. I like that once you're ramped out, this can turn a mana dork into a threat.
The black deck if full of recursive low-drops, so this can turn those into card advantage.
The BGx deck is very often a creature toolbox deck with things like Ravenous Chupacobra, Reclamation Sage and the like. This is another way to dig through the deck for what you need.
I don't think this card needs to be activated every turn to be good. I think often it could come down on turn 2 and just be a grizzly bear for a few turns while you curve out from hand. But it's a grizzly bear that demands to be answered, because if it's still around on turn 5+, not only could it tutor for the perfect creature for the current board, but also if the opponent spends their removal on your other creatures, this creature itself will be a huge beater. It looks like a lot of threat for 2cmc.
Just realized how good this card is with the new Vivien, Monsters' Advocate at advocating for the Tool Box Decks. 2 major cards that I think will have real implecations on the deck's consistancy and performance. Plush I like how this can act as a finisher for decks which 2 often have to rely on negating the opponents threats and outlasting them with more resources. getting a 2 mana 5/5 late game i think will really help out a lot.
