Am I a stupid idiot for thinking this might be a decent card to try out?
Compare to Cultivate. Although Visionary lacks fixing, you net a ramp and card advantage. Although being a creature leaves it vulnerable to removal, a 2/2 body isn't useless; it can pick up equipment, it can block a 1/1 goblin token, it's a flicker target ... I mean, maybe I'm biased because I'd marry Wall of Omens if it were legal. But, curious if others might give it a shot.
I actually really like this card. Good for Ramp and flicker archetypes.

The main advantage of creature ramp spells is that they are either only 1 mana, give you all colors, or both, and that's the trade-off you make for them being fragile.
This doesn't give you the cheapness, but it does replace itself, so it overcomes that tradeoff at least. Also, curving elf into this into 5-drop on t3 seemd good. This might actually be testable.
I think this card is dope and being slept on. Replacing itself and eating removal is good for 3 mana, replacing itself and trading on the ground os good for 3 mana, replacing itself and casting 5+ drops ahead of curve is great for 3 mana. Suspect this will see wide adoption as people play with it more.

I primarily play limited, so most of my spoiler season comments view cards through that lens.
Going to test this as the worst 3 drop green card in my 540. Optimistic but not overly excited.
Replacing itself is huge because drawing dorks late game feels so bad. This gives a body and a card for 3 mana which is something at most points in the game.
I think this works kinda like Cultivate / Kodama’s Reach.
On the premise that most people won’t spend a card removing it nor counter it, this is better IMHO.
If it does get spot removed, which I think is a very weird play, well, you just replaced it. Unless you really really need the mana, then the Elf is slightly riskier than Cultivate. There will be people running Aggro decks that just will bolt it.
If it gets countered, which I think can be a good play sometimes, it’s still no more riskier than getting a Cultivate countered.
If it gets Wrathed, Cultivate is better obviously.
I think the better chance of recursive value should outweigh his flaws, especially in decks that can and want to abuse it.
With that said, I don’t run Cultivate/Reach so I’m not sure if I’d run this. It’s a good card nonetheless.
I think Cultivate and Kodama's Reach are better than this card because
1) They provide awesome mana fixing, which this doesn't do
2) They thin your deck of two lands, which is great for future draws.
This card's ok, but I'm not really interested in playing it.

But they never draw you gas. Playing Visionary in the late game is just like cycling a Triome, except you still get the body, while Cultivate is a dead draw. It can be a clean two-for-one with some tempo as a defender against aggro. Just playing this turn 2 or 3 and fending off 1/1s before you access your ramp next turn can save a few points of life. Being a potential attacker is also useful to threaten planeswalkers and carry equipment. In green, where you have Craterhoof, Gaea's Cradle and Survival, being a creature rather than a sorcery is significant. I think it is far better than Cultivate.

How has this card played for everyone? On the surface it looks like a boring card not worth a slot, but it also seems like exactly what I’d want to draft in most green ramp/midrange decks.

It was a decent filler card for me. It's a better Phyrexian Rager, but that's not exactly saying much. I wouldn't go out of my way to add it, but not a bad filler card if you have a spare slot.

The problem with SCD discussion is not "is this good enough for cube" but can it make it into these higher competitive slots.
I been on the record for saying that Kodama's Reach is actually an incredibly bad card in cube - its one of the last filler cards I have in my cube to help round out the archetypes. 3 mana for 1 acceleration, in green is a horrible rate. I been wanting to remove it for some time.
Three years ago, you wanted cards that could fit in a variety of decks (including today), but the problem is some cards have very efficient cards such as Oko, Thief of Crowns, Skyclave Apparition, Shatterskull Smashing, Seasoned Pyromancer, Rankle, Master of Pranks that is essentially strong in 80% of decks in those colors and fills the engine roles of discard outlets, removal, artifact density, flicker targets etc. that the you need less of these "jack of all trait" cards and more hyper efficient archetype cards to compete.

I generally agree with this and am also lower on Kodama’s Reach / Cultivate than most people here. I would not be happy with those cards being in my Cube these days, even at 720. Llanowar Visionary, however, does two things better and one worse. 2/2 in play with the mana ability is better than a basic land. Drawing a random card is better than tutoring for a basic land. Obviously Llanowar doesn’t have the awesome fixing, and that’s where it’s worse.
But it is somewhat unfair to compare to cards like Oko which is a slam first pick. We’re talking about Llanowar as an 85th green card in a 720. I’m on the edge though.
