Even if it was downshifted, how good would Magus of the Bazaar be? I don't know what it was like in the standard of its time, but I'm having trouble thinking of a peasant deck that would get the right benefit. It dumps stuff that cares about being in the graveyard, but you really have to have at least 2 of them (or draw them) to make it worth it from that perspective. Maybe in a heavy madness cube?
What do you think about the new Planeswalker deck breed of 'walkers? Generally low power level, high cmc, board-impacting ultimates that come online after 3 turns plussing. Could these be balanced enough to jam in a cube after enough decks have been made? Call it Peasant++ if you will
So I am pretty new to MTGS, and I don't usually come around the pauper/peasant area much, as my own cube is 360-powered. But I meandered around and found this and it made me think of an idea me and my mates had a while back.
After my first standard deck rotated I got really mad and decided to abandon all 60 card formats. I played booster drafts and commander until I found pauper. I became overwhelmingly obsessed with pauper and it quickly became my format of preference. For any of you who play pauper constructed I've played since Treasure Cruise was legal, and I predominately play a variant of the G/W slivers list that is quite nasty.
A few of my friends were asking me and my pal how different pauper felt from "normal" magic, and I noted that the absence of Planeswalkers can be good OR bad depending on personal preference. This is the conversation that led us to wonder what a common planeswalker would be like.
We envisioned a low costed 2-3 loyalty walker with +1 like "gain 1 life" or "scry 1", a -1/-2 that would make a guy or kill a creature(but likely kill the walker just to balance power) and an ultimate that did something small like Lightning bolt.
That exact example still seems too good for a standart set/booster draft. Do you guys think there is any way to power balance a walker for the common level, or at least to see play in a pauper or peasant cube?
Cursed Scroll wouldn't be super-crazy in C/Ube (closer to Grafted Wargear than to Skullclamp as far as busted colorless cards) , but for it to become uncommon means it has to show up in an actual draftable set which is absolutely never going to happen... it can't show up in any paper set because it's on the Reserved List, and it became a MYTHIC in MTGO-only Tempest Remastered.
About Grave Pact, it would probably never be an uncommon, realistically. But I don't think it would necessarily be that busted in Peasant cube. It requires a bit of set up, and the BBB is also restrictive. But it feels like a cool card to build around.
Perhaps it would turn out to be a bad card for cube actually. Not bad as in low-powered, but bad in that when it is seen late in the draft no-one can pick it up, and bad that in some decks were you want to play it you can't really play it because of the mana, and bad that in it turns the decks that want it into a "did they draw it"-lottery with a very large gap in power level between the games in which they did and did not draw it.
EDIT: yeah, no, my comment is crap. You don't need to build around grave pact for it to be busted.
Guys, we're not going to get painlands. They've printed so many Masters sets now, and none of the lands were downgraded. Why would they start doing it now?

I agree, it seems highly unlikely that it'll happen at this point. Which is why I didn't bother waiting for them and just tossed em in my cube, much to Browndog's dismay.
That card could be sweet. It's a bit of set up, but it might be too much of a beating to be downshifted. Seems like there would be some pretty strong lines of play. Nantuko Husk, sac your team, clear their board, swing. Eldrazi Spawn and Scion cards play pretty nicely with it too. Even just trading a couple of guys in combat, and then casting to clear their other two creatures seems decent enough. I don't know, hard to evaluate how good or bad it would really be.
Doppelganger seems fairly bad... it can almost never block, is a horrible top-deck, and doesn't even work well with blue's best creatures (Mulldrifter and Whirler Rogue). There's at least some potential for a Pelakka Wurm deck I guess, but on average I definitely don't want it in my Cube decks.
Bazaar Trader.... uh, no. This isn't Zedruu EDH.
Goliath Sphinx has potential -- but it's seven mana for a basically-vanilla creature. Still, it's freaking enormous.
Dawnbringer Charioteers is just Seraph of Dawn 95% of the time, and if you DO have a Heroic theme it's probably way too good to be anything other than rare.

I get your point and agree, but TBF: nothing says 'uncommon' like 'pay 1, sac your X/1, draw 2 cards'

It's an easy way to inflate the EV of a set, since even low tier lands are still worth more than trash rares.
