Hi everyone. How do you all feel about Firespout and Savage Twister taking up slots in the Gruul multicolored section? To me they seem like the best sweepers in the format, but R/G isn't really a control archetype. I see a lot of cubes prioritizing Bloodbraid Elf, Ghor-Clan Rampager, etc. over these sweepers. Do you include or not include them?
Like you already said, the colors are the problem. Gruul is probably the worst color combination there is for sweeper effects as green is a very creature heavy color and red is a very aggressive color. That's why most Gruul decks will end up being aggressive decks with lots of creatures. Not exactly the kind of deck I'd play Savage Twister in. I had both cards in my cube in the past, but even though they're very good cards on their own they hardly ever made it into a deck.
It's not hard to create the potential for a red/black sweeper deck. So I'd say it's actually the green half of cards like Savage Twister that doesn't work. Sweepers and Green don't go together well and Green doesn't offer much for control decks in general either.
The issue with cards like this is that, even though they can be very powerful in a peasant environment, they don't support Gruul as much as they support Temur or Jund midrange/control decks. So the playing trying to draft the RG beatdown deck sees a card like Savage Twister in the pack and they just can't take it. I don't think that's a good thing.
Theyre great in Jund and RG ramp style decks. I've got the twister in my cube and it wins a lot of games. I think every colour combination should be viable as slower or faster decks, and making a gruul deck that can burn out early threats and then go over the top with fatties aint that bad.
Twister/Firespout don't support RG archetypes enough compared to other options imo. To support midranged decks I would prefer Fires of Yavimaya/Rhythm of the Wild as they bleed much more nicely into other RG archetypes. Then you also have all the excellent RG cards which you need to fit in: BBE, Ghor-Clan Rampager, Voltaic Brawler (if RG aggro exists).
If you want to support specifically RG ramp there are much less contested slots that can help it. Rolling Thunder and Smoldering Werewolf are red payoffs, and ramp decks can splash easily enough. Base green ramp exists without needing sweepers, so I question why RG ramp in particular needs them when you have free access to burn.
