In todays the week that was they mention Maher's new card that he submitted for Rav. its a 2/1 for 2 black that makes you reveal the top card of your libary and you lose life equal to its casting cost and puts it in your hand during your upkeep. I only posted this because I didn't see anyone post it.

I'm not sure if it means that you have to pay for the cards you draw or it lets you draw extra cards. Pretty sure it's the second one, though. The other one sucks too much, although it did sorta sound that way.
It's sort of like a Phyrexian Arena, you get a card during your upkeep in exchange for some life. I doubt it will be printed as is though. R&D will probably do something to make it better.
It says that it still has to make it through the R&D, so maybe it will say that you may put it into your hand if you do pay X life X being its converted mana cost. Either way it may be a very good card, 0 life to get a land at the beginning of your upkeep, 3 life for a Rend Flesh. Heh it works well with Sensei's Divining Top end of turn look at the top 3 cards put a land on the top.

does this show us a clue to what theme Ravinica will be?
If you had taken, almost two years ago, the lead of the card that originally submitted Jens Thoren after winning the invitational, you would have thought that Mirrodin was an apocalypse comeback (it was called Forestfolk, and it did exactly the same as Solemn Simulacrum , but it costed 2GU)
So I must agree with you, DB, it tells nothing, but I still believe it's at least, going to keep its original color and power.

I know the perfect guy for the third faction:

it's interesting, it provides black with another card drawer and unlike past enchantment based ones(arena, bargain, necropotence) this one is easy to get rid of if it starts to hurt too much. Whatever changes wizards r&d make it will probably remain a BB 2/1 because the ability is definitely black and the size/cost is average for a black creature with a playable ability. Even if it's printed as is it will be playable its a decent costed aggro creature and in a cheap aggro black build maybe with sensei's divining top for card quality this would work just fine.
It's on par with Phyrexian Arena, and in some decks even better. Even without any library manipulation, in a typical weenie deck, you will be losing 0 life about 40% of the time, and 1 life about 20% of the time. In the remaining 40%, you will lose 2-3, and very rarely 4 life, but hey, they don't call it Suicide Black for nothing. And don't forget is costs less mana than the Arena, and can beat down for 2. And if combined with some cheap library manipulation, it goes from good to superb.
If printed as-is, it will definitely see a lot of play, but I have a nagging suspicion R&D will neuter it in some way. Oh well, let's keep our fingers crossed.

You don't have any evidence for this. MaRo has stated in the past that they always print the Invitational cards with the intention of making them tournament playable. Kai got screwed cause they thought that the Wizard tribe was going to be stronger than it ended up being. Even then Kai sees play in some T1 decks I think.
I wil play this in my sui aggro deck. It will be soo awsome.. leave me stupid old card drawers

About every invitational card is playable to a certain degree.
As for this one, I strongly suspect they'll make it weaker somehow; either put it at three (for a slight increase in toughness) or maybe he'll draw just nonlands.
Why are the invitational cards all creatures, anyway? That's boring. Chalice was an invitational card submitted by a contestant, I understand. (Having to be able to put the winner on the card is no real argument.)
Two theories: they like the 'Flavor' of playing with a Pro-Player, the card actually representing the winner.
they don't HAVE to be creatures, but creatures are the most popular, 'fun' card type so it just ends up that way. I know that Zvi was on a crusade to get his picture on a land...

Heh that would be interesting, the mount Rushmore of magic.
Anyway, as for the invitational card... i could possibly see this as a enchantment as most of these styles of cards are for black... 'cept for Seizan. And it would would also make for the first non-creature invitational card... i want to see that

I think the card is best suited for SuiBlack- you have a 2/1 for 2 that keeps threats coming. Because you're only going to be losing 0-3 life, it's not that big of an issue, as long as you keep the threats coming (which creates the circular arguement- this card produces more threats). Unfortunately, w/ the extended rotation, SuiBlack looses everything that makes it good.
I guess this will be a time-tested card.

The card he ultimately submitted was a 2/1 for Black ManaBlack Mana. During each upkeep you reveal the top card of your library and pay life equal the card's converted casting cost and put it in your hand.
ummmm maybe im reading this differently than every one else, but it says each upkeep, meaning you get a draw during your oponents turn too, maybe im misreading or miss understaning this, but if a card says each upkeep, it usually means your oponents too, but that would make the card too good i think
I think this card is fantastic. Obviously Maher's idea is that its a cheap black creature that beats for 2 and also helps you burn through land clumps in your deck. And in a format with Divining Top, it can guarantee you a free card, nearly (as long as its land). This card will see constructed play.
You don't have any evidence for this. MaRo has stated in the past that they always print the Invitational cards with the intention of making them tournament playable.
Except Black RARELY gets a card that is just really good with no drawback. Kokusho and Cranial Extraction are two recent exceptions but otherwise, R&D thinks it's very "flavorful" for Black to never have something without a drawback.
I have to agree with the guy before, I'd love to play anyone who says this card sucks.:halo:The origional cards he submited went along the lines of :

At the begining of your upkeep, reveal the top card of your library. You may pay X life, were X is the CMC of that card, and put it into your hand. If you don't RFG.
2/1
The problem is that the second one is far too powerful, because it nets you a free land a lot of the time. The first one is good, after all Demonic Consultation was played in its day (in Necropotence), but WotC seems not to want to print tourney caliber black cards so...

Yes i read this as well, and it seems like mahers card may actually be pretty good when it is done. In a cheap aggro deck this will give you great card and tempo advantage. I like this a lot, and hope that if it changes they at least find a way to keep the power and mana cost relatively close.

I does have a drawback of life loss. Sometimes it can be bad and that is what balances the card. Sure you can get aound it with Divining Top but play Top in an aggro deck is a drawback as well. Either way, I think this card is a good one, 2/1 beater that give me cards, why not?
