Thanks guys. I dimly remembered land-play rule changes a year or so ago, about number of land drops, and terminology I cant remember right now lol. thanks for answering me. I was looking at it maybe in Wild Defiance
Does Swell of Growth allow you to play an extra land on your turn in addition to your normal land play? Sorry if it seems self-explanatory but I thought it might say additional
I'm curious, has anyone messed around with assault formation? Seems good with the 1/2 elf and Dwynen. Also makes siege rhino more beastly if you are playing junk and splashing rhinos
I asked a similar question a week ago about Heartless Summoning and Dash, so sorry if this feel like spam.. Does Heartless Summoning reduce the cost of Evoke (creatures like Cloudthresher)?
I havent read the whole thread, but I skimmed through it, and i am here to say that combo is very alive in standard right now with Temur Battlecat/Ascendancy Combo. It can win on turn 4, which is decent in standard terms. It is backed up by big stompy green critters. I like it a lot, but I won a game last night with it and was told how crazy cheap it is to win with combo-MORESO in this person's mind than control. To me, nothing is worse than control, and combo is usually weak, so this stance took me by surprise. So i ask you all, what do you hate more, losing to someone with a smug control face, or losing to someone who finally got their combo deck to win?
What about losing to someone with a smug combo face?
I would rather play against a Combo deck. I feel like when I face a combo deck I usually have some tool to break up the combo, or at least potential to interact with the parts. With Control, I feel like counter spells prevent me from playing.
Just my opinion. And, only from a Standard reference point.
Lol I hear ya. To me its different. To combo off is a joy, the joy of having something work when youve been down trodden to that point. Its a face of joy, not smugness- imo anyway. Control is more smug, because the whole game they are deigning to let you do things. You dont have a way out when they murder/death/kill/counter everything you play. It just feels differently to me. Also from a standard only place- which combos in standard usually take like 5-10 different parts to work haha.... It you lose to combo in standard its not because they win, but because you lose- if that makes any sense at all lol
There are many different options, with jund seemingly strongest, but I was just doing a little search for things and realized that maaaybe mono white could be a thing? Has Isamaru, Hound of Konda, Rhys the RedeemedAnafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit, and something I really like, Mikaeus, the Lunarch (I was looking at 1-2 drops). What I like a about Mikaeus it's that he can be played for 1 mana with a hero's blade in play.
Well it would be done differently than just lifestealing for three. But yeah whatever, im more into the op list amd think there is def something in there. Four mana curve really isnt that bad...but im new to modern as i said

Seems like a sweet casual deck, but it would pretty much fold to the current meta. You'd have to go heavy discard and disruption to make it to mid to late game.
Has anyone been brewing with Brutal Hordechief and Hellrider (I would add Phyrexian Metamorph to the list to copy them)? It seems to me there is a deck there somewhere... its possible I missed an entire thread about this too, so clue me in if there is prior talk about this.
[Edit] Looking back throught the cards Ive listed, Hordechief and Lingering souls are the only things requiring Black mana. We could almost go Naya with this and use Birds of Paradise/other mana fixing to pay for black.
These two together + Goblin Rabblemaster seems great. Throw in Brimaz, King of Oreskos? I think white would be needed to play Lingering souls in this. Need an anthem, and some evasion...hmm. I'll be editing this as I think of good pieces for it. I like Metamorph a lot from my experience with it, and it gives us a colorless clone for 3 mana. Copying Hellrider or Hordechief asap seems like my initial gameplan - but many of you may think it is winmore, and that there is a better option in its slot. Please give me all suggestions! I want to build this.
Just was directed here, awesome! So I came to this deck on my own for the most part, having never played modern before. I was a Path to Exile away from maybe being 4-0 in my first modern even last night. DORAN IS AMAERFUL! Alas, the Paths were in the boyfriend's deck, and I faced Mirran Crusader and Soldier of the Pantheon in my last match. Im just going to copy my thread to this post:
I went to my first modern event tonight and lost in the final match, overall 3-1
But my deck performed admirably, and since getting home I have begun tweaking it. The
main goal is to play Rhinos, then copy more Rhinos with Metamorphs. Or just beat down
with huge creatures.
I threw the sideboard together at the last moment, but the transformational sideboard of dropping
the WB Liege theme for the WG Liege theme game two was a perfect change up that won almost
every time. I never once put Anafenz or G-ruk or Sundering Growth into my main (though I stand by
Sundering Growth in this deck). I went 3-1 only losing to a Whit Weenies deck running protection vs
abzan colors - Mirran Crusader, Soldier of the Pantheon.... Even still, I almost was able to beat him.
I think the deck could really be nice with a little fine tuning. So Ive been messing around, and I think
this is what I will bring to the table next time:
In the final match, had I had Path to Exile I probably could have won. I loved the synergy with Deathbringer, unmake and Utter End, but was finding the 4cmc curve of Liege Rhino to be really nice. I think Rhys and Voice are a nice couple additions that lower the curve just a bit more, and maybe get me a little more versatility. What do you all think?
I would love advice on either of these, though the second list is maybe more what I am leaning towards. The Deathbringers were always awwesome. Then I would side them out game two for wilt leafs (leaves?) and pound through to victory. I will say, I have no intention of getting Tarmy or Confidents. I really didnt miss hand disruption at all either, instead letting Metamorphs copy their threat (or their War n Peace).
Report 3-1:
Round 1 VS T1 Junk Midrange (2-0): He had Tarmy and more, but I wont by copying his Tarmy, then landing Deathbringer and playing 2 Rhinos. G2: Landed a Sorin, Solemn Visitor token which made him sack his creatures every turn. Without that token Id have lost. This game stretched out, which me having maybe 20 cards in my graveyard by the end.
Round 2 VS TukTuk Goblins (2-0): G1 he turn oned a Goblin Explorer and ramped me into Deathbringer Liege, Metamorph copying Deathbringer, then Siege Rhino. G2 was similar but with Wilt-leaf Lieges instead. Both games I thought He might get me with Gob Grenades, but once I started gaining life it was ok.
Round 3 VS Goblin Burn (2-1): Much like the previous round, except he beat me game two with Bolts and grenades. I had sided one of the three Sorins out- never again will i make that mistake!
Round 4 VS White Weenie Blade: (0-2): I made a couple misplays (attacking with giant life link into a creature with protection thinking that I could gain life). He had Mirran Crusader and Soldier of the Pantheon, both able to block almost all of my creatures. G1 misplay was copying my deathbringer liege instead of his Crusader. The match came down to a few life in both games. If I had my Path to Exiles, could things have been different? Of course I believe so

Use Heartless Summoning as a kill spell, with Blood Artist? With BA in play and a bunch of token, HS would kill them all for an alpha strike lol...
PS Im brand new to modern

Core:
- Hellrider
- Brutal Hordechief
- Goblin Rabblemaster
- Lingering Souls
- Sorin, Solemn Visitor
- Monastery Mentor
- Young Pyromancer
- Inquisition of Kozilek
- Thoughtsieze
Sorin, Solemn Visitor giving lifelink to Hellrider is awesome, but sadly doesnt affect Hordechief the same way.- Brimaz, King of Oreskos
- Hero of Bladehold
- Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
- Elspeth, Sun's Champion
- Assemble the Legion
- Rise of the Hobgoblins
- Hordeling Outburst
- Siege-Gang Commander
- Cloudgoat Ranger
- Geist-Honored Monk
- Increasing Devotion
Brimaz is good, but only if you accept that his token is put into play attacking and thus will not trigger Hellrider or Hordechief.- Balefire Liege
- Ashenmoor Liege
- Deathbringer Liege
- Spear of Heliod
- Glorious Anthem
I really like Balefire Liege, but think 5 mana is too much probably. Pumps Goblins and Spirits. Figure of Destiny into Lightning HelixI went to my first modern event tonight and lost in the final match, overall 3-1

4 Overgrown Tomb
3 Woodland Cemetery
3 Sunpetal Grove
1 Sandsteppe Citadel
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1 Llanowar Wastes
1 Plains
3 Forest
4 Wilt-Leaf Liege
3 Kitchen Finks
3 Bile Blight
1 Garruk, Apex Predator
2 Anafenza, the Foremost
2 Sundering Growth
