So I think that Days Undoing is going to affect the meta pretty profoundly, and wondering if maybe we start to reconsider an old favorite: Curse of Exhaustion

I've never been a fan of rule of law or the eidolon because if you get countered then you're screwed for the turn. Essentially making every counter in an opponent's deck a time walk. Curse doesn't have this drawback. And nowthat day's undoing will be filling hands and emptying graveyards, it seems like a good idea to limit what an opponent can do with it. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I agree magus numbers would have been nice, but she's already pretty heavily costed at four, to give her an even fatter butt would only increase the cost. I am thinking at four she's pretty fair.

Regarding manabarbs, I think it's a great stunner play, I've never dropped it and NOT seen and opponent visibly shocked by seeing the card, particularly Jund and grixis players who casually toss life away like it's nothing. I can't tell you how many times it has just won the game by hitting the field. That being said, I have killed myself with it a few times as well, usually because my opponent abupt decay'd my runed halo or destroyed worship. Most players online just play into it, even without ghostly prison or sphere on the field its a great way to corner an opponent; however, its true potential shows when the tax effects are on the field. Wanna really piss off a Jund player? Play manabarbs with Bob on the field.

On an unrelated note, I've been having some issues with elves recently. I'm interested to hear how the rest of you guys are dealing with that deck. I was thinking that a dampening or storage matrix in the SB might be the way to go.

I've been running worship with mutavaults just to ensure that I have a creature when any lethal damage would be done I'll be protected.

I'm not sure if I agree on the angel, the fact that she can't be bolted seems pretty decent, although she dies to all other forms of removal... That is an issue. I'm attracted to her tax and juice double, but I can't see her as more than a 2 of...we'll have to do some testing and see if she is worth a spot.

I run a naya she'll for war's toll, manabarbs (I go back and forth between these two as I can never decide which I like more) and sowing salt in the SB for tron and bloom titan decks. I like a bant she'll as well, but I'm in a tron heavy meta so I need that LD.

Hey fellas, I wanted to get the communittee's opinion on a few cards

Worship I've been playing this as a 1 of in my Naya prison deck and with a man land it's pretty awesome. I'm sorta surprised that it hasn't received more attention in this thread.

Manabarbs I've been playing with manabarbs for a while now and for me it's a nice little bit of damage. "Oh you want to attack me? Sure, just remember to pay the toll with mana and life." For me, worship and runed halo are enough to keep me from killing myself.

War's Toll War's Toll has been an all star for me, in conjunction with suppression field or ghostly prison, this card forces opponents to decide what the want to do--cast and develop their board, or attack, or save mana for counters (and only a single counter at that).

I'm also interested in hearing what the team has to say about Archangel of Tithes, to me she seems pretty awesome.

Feedback on any of these would be appreciated.

I've had a pet prison deck for a while now, and Magic origins has really tossed these white enchantment decks a nice bone in Starfield of Nyx (which btw, is going to be a reaylly pretty foil--if you care about that sort of thing). Essentially, I'm looking at the card as a nice source of desperately needed recursion for enchantments, but also as a possible Opalescence-esque type win con.

To me, the card looks like it has some great upside, particularly in my build which uses Eidolon of Blossoms as it's source of gas. And, as we all know osing things like Ghostly Prison to abrupt decays is always a pain. It would be nice to have them back if needed.

Of course all that sounds great, but Starfield of Nyx is 5 mana, which is super steep in terms of resources, and I'm not sure if it's a reasonable investment if we are already running Sigils at five mana. Currently, I'm running Open the Vaults as a one of, and that has been successful (by the time I use it my graveyard is usually full of niffy enchantments that lock out an opponent, or put me so far ahead that it's tough to beat my board.)

That being said, Starfield still really looks tempting--I almost considered trying to use it with Hatching Plans (but i'm not sure that card is usable just yet...)

My current idea for a deck look like this

I'm thinking that this has some potential. I'm hoping that Starfield is the shot in the arm that the deck needs.

Because Enchantress needs to be a thing in modern.

    Enduring Archetype
    Creature GGWW
    Human Druid 2/4
    Hexproof
Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, you may draw a card.

    Adamant Picket-lines W1
    Enchantment
Creatures can't attack you unless its controller pays 1 for each creature he or she controls that's attacking you.

    Rector's tresses 1WG
    Enchantment-Aura
Enchanted creature has "when this creature dies, it's owner may search his or her library for an enchantment card with a converted mana cost of 3 or less and may put that card onto the field"

    Pestilential Aether 1BB
    Enchantment
B:Pestilential Aether deals 1 damage to each creature and player. If more than 3 mana is spent in this way, sacrifice Pestilential Aether.

    Price of Hubris
    Enchantmet WR
Whenever an opponent casts a spell during your turn, Price of Hubris deals 2 damage to him or her. You gain 2 life.

    Serra's Refectory
    Legendary Land
Serra's Refectory enters the battlefield tapped
T, Pay 2 life: Add 1 to your mana pool. If that mana is spent on an Enchantment spell, that spell can’t be countered by spells or abilities

I play a prison deck so its super relevant for me...though I recognize that it is a niche deck. That being said, some enchantment recursion would be great.

War's Toll would mainly be about limiting the ability to cast spells. If an opponent would like to use his/her attack step, they must reserve all mana for it meaning that they would not get a Main phase 1 or 2 in their own turn, and they would not get a chance to counter on your own turn. It would make for a very long game against R/B/X because counter magic and off turn spells are their primary source of control. But you're correct it doesn't shut down attacks--it really just makes it difficult to one or the other.

So I stumbled across a list created by Frank Lepore over at TCGplayer a while back (link here: http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=11720) and after looking at the list I realized that it's about the best thing going for a non-agro/non-combo player like myself. I played his version for a while online and after about 6 months I came to realize the decks weaknesses to early game control and to big mana. I peppered in some of my own outside the box threats because I enjoy being unique (which--I'm told is a no-no in modern, but whatever) and I looked for ways to streamline play with some added card draw. What came out after about 6 more months of playing was this hot mess.

    Artifacts
    • 3 Defense Grid
    Creatures
    • 2 Heliod, God of the Sun
    • 3 Eidolon of Blossoms
    Enchantment
    • 4 Ghostly Prison
    • 3 Leyline of Sanctity
    • 2 Oblivion Ring
    • 1 Rest in Peace
    • 3 Runed Halo
    • 3 Sigil of the Empty Throne
    • 2 Sphere of Safety
    • 3 Suppression Field
    • 2 Manabarbs
    • 2 Endless Horizons
    • 3 Utopia Sprawl
    • 2 Greater Auramancy
    Lands
    3 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
    4 Plains
    1 Sacred Foundry
    1 Mountain
    2 Temple of Plenty
    4 Temple Garden
    2 Forest
    2 Stomping Ground
    3 Horizon Canopy
    SB: 2 Rest in Peace
    SB: 1 Leyline of Sanctity
    SB: 2 Choke
    SB: 3 Nevermore
    SB: 2 Stony Silence
    SB: 1 Defense Grid
    SB: 2 Blood Moon
    SB: 2 Wrath of God

Now, this deck still has some problems, but I am at the very least, playing competitively with almost all of the tier decks. Tron still gives me problems, even with the tron hate in the side board, but it is no longer an automatic scoop. I'm really proud of the deck, manabarbs often comes out of nowhere to just throttle people. Heliod and Eidolon of blossoms is a remarkable pairing, and with Nykthos I'm able to pump out really large amounts of mana. Utopia Sprawl is never a dead draw, even late game because it's typically a 1 mana 4/4 angel or draw spell thanks to Sigil and the Eidolon, and early game it allows me to drop a Ghostly Prison on turn 2 which is crippling for agro decks.

I'm finding that the deck is not impervious to anything, but it's strong against most everything (except tron--and to a lesser extent Primetime and infect decks). I haven't really played much else outside of this deck so I'm not a guru of Modern by any stretch. I just really enjoy it. I don't have much of a meta locally, so I haven't been able put it into practice in person, only online. I'm headed to gencon to try it out this summer, but by then who knows what it will look like.

There's a few cards that I've been toying with i'd like to get the communities input on...
Oppressive Rays Seems like strong 1 mana removal/tax the problem I see is Geist of St. Traft
Porphyry Nodes A strong card, but can be played around and typically ends up killing my angels
Search for tomorrow seems like a decent way to thin a deck and get a basic if bloodmoon hits the board.
War's Toll Seems like a crippling card in many cases. Shuts down either casts or attacks if a ghostly prison is on the board, added bonus of ending counter spells if a player wants to do anything on his/her own turn.
Open the Vaults for obvious reasons
Idyllic Tutor again, for obvious reasons.

In truth, i'm always looking for a deck that can be competitive and combat the idea that modern has to be about "X"
I hope i've done that here.

Try it out, It's a ton of fun.

I'm a fan of looking into commanders that seldom see play in most groups, Maelstrom Wanderer combo or Azami, Lady of Scrolls wizard tribal may be exactly what you're looking for, but you're not going to win any points for creative deck buildings. There's plenty that you can do with outside the box commanders like Tibor and Lumia, Damia, Sage of Stone, Savra, Queeen of the Golgari, or Hanna, Ship's Navigator.

I've recently made a Momir Vig, Simic Visionary deck that is attacks lands (my playgroup has been experimenting with LD lately) that is not your typical momir deck by any stretch, it uses cards like Storm Cauldron and Mana breach to restrict players' mana base while using Explore and similar cards to work my own way through.

Ultimately, I think I'd pick a commander that fits the archetype that you're looking to run with and then pick a specific card as your thematic inspiration.
You can still be competitive running Lure/Saffi, Ericksdotter or Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts and Hatred. If you're anything like me, building the deck is as much fun as playing it. I'd spend a lot of time on gatherer and just play around. Cockatrice is a great way to put decks together and try them out, and you can just start picking your way through cards alphabetically.

    Hope that helps

I'd say stay away from any commander that lends itself to a deck that can't function without the commander. Things like purphoros are super easy to build but the deck plays itself,by and large, and if someone hits him with a tuck spell it can turn a game south really quickly. Personally, I'd pick a commander and a card that seems to draw a theme you enjoy- savra/gravepact or saffi/lure were two combinations that I enjoy. Recently, I found a Carr called overburden that I'm working on something with.

The best advice that I think I can give is to build decks with members of your meta. Hashing out card choices in a deck gives you insight into what others are thinking, and provides you with a chance to bounce your ideas of off others. Just make sure to keep track of which card belongs to each other.

Seriously though, it's a win for everyone, friendships grow tighter, games of magic are more exciting because you know more about what an opponent might be thinking. It's just a great way to go.
