This one stumps me and I've gotten a lot of nebulous answers:
If I have Guile and Nether Void in play,
can I cast a spell,
intentionally let Nether Void counter it,
then immediately cast it again without paying 3?
Guile's ability specifically states (Oracle rulings) you may play the countered spell.
Is this a replacement effect?
Does the word "play" bypass Nether Void?
Or would I have to pay 3 if I want my spell to resolve?
'Cuz it would be pretty damned sweet to put up a 3 mana barrier on all my opponents' spells, snagging any that don't pay the troll toll.
Just some EDH nastiness I'm contemplating.
What's the official word here?
I would very much appreciate it.
Thank you in advance.
Now if you use this card alongside Havengul Lich you are certainly in business
Funny you should mention that...
Obviously I'm not planning on putting her in a deck with no other creatures-
her potential would be wasted.
And I'm not talking about any attempt at a competitive deck here, just something for fun.
Still, stealing creatures *permanently* is no small matter.
Comparisons between this and Mind Control are not entirely appropriate,
as you get to keep your stolen critter even if (sorry, when) she is removed.
I agree that she could have used Flash and would be more appropriately costed as such, but this is an incredibly powerful ability no matter what form it comes in.
I was already pre-assembling a Standard-legal (but mostly for fun) deck with her, new Zombie Lord, Lich, and Ooze (Ooze and Lich step on each others' toes a bit, but can also help each other out in interesting ways).
If I can add Havengul Runebinder without messing up Lich or Ooze too much,
things could get even more interesting... will DEF. make an EDH deck with all of these soon.
But this is all speculation right now.
tl;dr- I def. plan on putting my Johnny powers to work in an attempt to break this card, or at least make her an EDH monster.
^^^ Awesome idea, considering they're both Emblem makers.
AvNB was *hardly* a drop of the ball.
As others have stated, the two foil 'walkers are basically worth $20 alone,
and there were also sweet cards like Undermine, and cool alt-arts for Countersquall and Lightning Helix. I would gladly pay $20-25 for another release of similar quality.
I would be majorly surprised to see Tarmogoyf reprinted before the Ravnica Shocklands.
Sure, a single 'goyf is worth a playset of Watery Graves, but pretty much *every* Modern deck benefits from the shocklands, while 'goyf is more situational.
I'm pretty sure the shockland pricetag is at *least* as bad for the format as Tarmogoyf's.
They should both get reprints, but as others have said, I don't see 'goyf getting printed in a Standard-legal set.
The lands are another story, though I could actually see them introducing something better there.
They also need to reprint the Onslaught fetch lands, as it's freaking weird that only half of that cycle is Modern-legal.
Def. one of my favorite cards in the set, second only to Havengul Lich.
I could see it showing up in control decks as a one-of for a late game coup-de-grace,
but I'm most interested in using it in Casual/EDH.
I'd also love a 2UU variation that lets you play a spell with the same CMC as the countered spell, rather than the same type.
It wouldn't be as powerful as Counterlash, but it would be a better neo-Mana Drain than Scattering Stroke is at that cost.
There were spoiler lists out before Urza block, used to wait for that lovely text doc before heading out to Orlando for the Pre-releases back when they were a huge event.
No kidding- I remember knowing the details of every single card in Weatherlight before it was released. That's one of the reasons I bought a box (it's still one of my favorite sets).
Havengul Runebinder seems like a decent backup plan if a certain Cage has your Lich locked down.
A 3/3 zombie token (and making other tokens stronger) is a decent punishment against those who would cage my precious Lich!
Still praying Disenchant makes it into this set.
I'm an Esper guy, and I'd much rather use that than Divine Offering, Revoke Existence, Mental Misstep, or Steel Sabotage.
Though MM is looking more appealing every day...
This card is *definitely* most unfair to mono-black.
They should reprint Curse Artifact at 1B and doing three damage rather than two. That would make people think twice about this as an auto-include against Reanimator. It would also be in-flavor with the block.
Also- multiple Cages on the board are *not* worthless- most removal only gets rid of one. If more than one is out, it's that much harder to get out from under the effect.
Wait... Timeshifted cards are Modern legal?!
I thought there had to be a printing with the newer frame?
I had no idea... shows how little I know about the format.
Thanks for the tip!
I still wouldn't mind another printing, though.
Divine Offering and Revoke Existence won't be options once Scars rotates out.
Revoke existence is probably a better card anyways, what with moorland haunt being able to turn artifact creatures into tokens, sad robot turning into a card when he dies, and now helavault returning cards it exiled, but only if it was put into a graveyard.
Revoke is a great card, but as others have pointed out,
the Instant speed makes Disenchant the better choice in many cases.
I also want them to print Disenchant in a Modern-legal set
Speaking of which, this stupid cage makes me long for the days when tapping an artifact turned it off.
Even shutting it down for one round could give you the leeway you need to remove it entirely.
Still hoping they just reprint Disenchant.
It's overdue.
One of the alternate Sorin images could always end up on Sorin in a Duel Deck.
I would prefer either to the current, we-promise-this-isn't-SOTN-inspired art on Alucard, Lord of Innistrad.

That could help drive home the idea White != good in every case.
In all seriousness, it's the least likely to show up in DKA,
as it seems more "human affiliated" than Simic or Izzet.
I'm betting we won't see the other 3 until next set, though.
This set focuses on black and its opposing colors quite a bit.
Funny you should mention that...
