What's everyone's thoughts on Phantasmal image being re-printed? I think everyone would dig that over Clone being reprinted.

  • posted a message on Now, how do you feel about the SoM block?
I was actually just talking about this with my buddy before I saw this. We were talking about how many good things are in the Scars block and how we wish we had gotten more of it. I remember when we started playing (right before Scars was released) that we mainly bought ZEN block and the core sets because we all thought artifacts were dumb and didn't want them, now we are wishing we didn't do that so we weren't stuck trading for the scars stuff we should of been using from the beginning.

Also, with your second question I think that the INN block is actually starting to shape up more and that blocks just require patience and see what actually becomes good. The more time I spend with DKA the more I want to use cards in it.

When a creature returns to your hand or goes to the graveyard all things attached or put on it (like counters, enchantments, and artifacts) are all unattached or removed. So when it comes back it has no -1/-1 counters and gets the +1/+1 counter from the undying mechanic.

This is an awesome list, thanks for going through the trouble of making it for us! I want to start a little land collection and this can become a check off list for me.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, this weekend while my friends were visiting for the release I was able to pick up some some good staples I think. They were mostly from the current standard, but I got some Dismembers, a playset of Go For The Throat, a couple different scars quicklands, and a couple commons and uncommons for my Landfall Zoo deck.

I'm trying to find a shop around me that will buy up all the stuff I don't need/want and no one else around me needs/wants so I can pick up a couple fetches with the money.

I've ran into people who value their stuff at Starcity Prices and my stuff at the low price on Tcgplayer. I normally avoid trading with these people.

The group I all play with values everything at the Mid-Range price on tcgplayer (which is the same as magiccards.info too), all rounded to the nearest .50 cent marker. I would hate to be trading with someone who picks values from two different sites for each person, not exactly fair.

My friend bought a box today the first pack he opened had a Havengul Lich and a foil Strangleroot geist. A nice 20 dollar pack and he was only one it. We are going to draft with the rest of it when he gets home so I'll let you know if we have any cool pulls from there.

    Quote from slipknot72102
some rares are probably going to see marginal play. nothing is really going to be of staple quality immediately in modern. The red filter spell(the name alludes me) might see play in storm, although it is technically card disadvantage.

I would highly recommend the scars duals. They are pretty cheap and excellent in a format as fast as modern. Even control decks use a healthy number of them as to be able to be reactive early over lands that enter the battlefield tapped early.

The core set lands are extremely cheap, and quite good in conjunction with fetches. I would probably prioritize like this.

    1. Fetches(from colors you play most)

    2. core set "check lands"(might as well get all of these unless your extremely on a budget. You can find most of these for less than 5 bucks a piece since the market is so saturated with them)

    3. Scars lands

    4. color or deck staples you want to play

    5. as many shocklands as you can afford or that your deck/decks wants to play.

I would probably have a deck in mind for most decisions that way you can be piecing something together. I like to start with that deck proxied up and then put the pieces in as I buy them. Gives you a sense of accomplishment.

I'm currently building up my land binder with all of those, and I just got done proxying up my deck i'm working on to start testing and replacing it.

Something you said confused me though,

"The core set lands are extremely cheap, and quite good in conjunction with fetches"

    I thought the check lands weren't fetch-able?

Thanks for all the advice and the link to that thread guys!

I am currently trying to get the lands, atleast trading for the fetches and hopefully one day getting myself those nice shocks. Would it be a good idea to pick up the scars quick lands around the time that rotates out of standard when they are cheaper, or are they not really used in modern due to the shocks and fetches?

Also, I looked at the list and noticed i have about 10% of it already stashed away or in current decks, so that was nice to see that i'm on the right path.

Keep the recommendations coming! Could any of the new DKA cards become staples?

I'm starting to get into modern and I am really enjoying the large amount of cards to choose from. I currently have a RWG landfall deck w/ KotR. I was wondering what would be some good staples to have on hand for other decks that i may build in the future that I can keep my eyes open for? Cheaper stuff I won't mind putting into my modern box till the time comes that I may need them.
