Was in a 116 person SCG tournament today (7 rounds) and decided to run jund shadow with the white splash. My list is almost identical to others here, as it seems the only real differences are single cards. I was on 3 tarfire, but dropped my rampager for 1x liliana, the last hope. Very stock.
I hear you purklefluff I had a fever and wasn't feeling great but had committed to going with the family so at least played a couple rounds before bailing to try to get better for work tomorrow.
I played the same foiled out deck you were discussing in the first round our turn ones were almost identical I cast thoughtseize and snagged his LoV, He thoughtseized took and snagged my LoV. Turn 2 I cycled wraith twice traversed and got a death's shadow online on turn two that got him to around 8. I'd inquisitioned him the turn before so figured I'd go for leathal figuring he probably only had 6 outs at the time. Unfortunately he'd topped a decay and then top decked souls before I could find another threat. Game 2 I had a Wraith, Wraith, Thoughtseize, Death Shadow, Bauble, fetch fetch start. This one just came down to bad luck and getting lands flooded. Cracked bauble and saw bloodcrypt and wanted something other than a land so fetched and thoughtseized taking TS but he also had inquisition which took my death's shadow. My bauble draw ended up being a land, and then my normal draw was a land. I cycled the first wraith and got a land then cycled the second and got a goyf to cast on turn two. He also played a turn two goyf but my hand was pretty much lands at that point.
The second game though i think kinda gave me the feeling you had. We were talking while playing, nice enough guy, and he was on U/W control where his entire main deck slant was to have good matches for DS. He could side out the main decked DS hate for something else if needed. He'd won the roll and cast a serum visions on turn one. I went ahead and fetched and thoughtseized and saw blessed alliance, spreading seas, spreading seas, path, Condemn, Hallowed Fountain. I took a spreading seas. My overgrown tomb became an island so I fetched a stomping grounds to cast a turn two Goyf I figured if it got pathed I could go get a swamp and cast the other goyf in hand next turn. Turn three another spreading seas on my stomping ground along with a Ancestral Vision etc. I got a shot in with the goyf before it got pathed but then I needed green to traverse for black etc. In general what had been a nice hand was trumped with better answers. The next game was pretty much the same series I managed to have a 7/8 goyf and summoning sick 10/10 DS in play to have the Goyf get condemmed and have blessed alliance cast to give me enough life to kill the DS. In general there's enough discard to battle through the initial creature hate but the mana denial mixed with the ancestral visions ends up being rough since he'd get a new hand of removal to replace the cards you've stripped away while recovering from the mana denial etc...
In general it felt like being a turn behind most the fight it was a match up that left me wondering if I'd had more threats and or faster threats if I'd have been in better shape getting some initial damage in while he was working on the manabase. As it was my temp was around 100 at the time so I felt like I should call it a day there.
I'm trying snapcaster mage out as a one of finding I like being able to Traverse for it to then flash back for removal, Traverse, discard, bolt etc... I need to pick up some cards yet but went 1-2 vs infect, 2-1 vs elves, and 1-2 verses an esper deck with swords both game three losses my opponent only had a couple life left. Even though I was playing bolt I was able to get delirium by turn two or three the majority of the games. Game three vs infect I'd planned on killing an enchanted Thurn the last troll with Liliana in hand post combat but he was able to get to a dryad arbor out to save it. The esper deck was playing swords with path and push for removal. I was keeping him off creatures and had him to 2 life when he top decked 1cc creature and put sword of fire and ice and sword of feast and famine on it. I think in both losses playing Tarmogoyfs rather than the substitute of Grim Flayer it would have made the games a turn or two shorter in my favor.
Here's what I ended up taking to regionals and it felt fairly competitive over all but we called it a day early since it was announced there were 600 people in attendance and it would be 10 rounds of swiss prior to going to the top 8 tonight.
Game 1 mulled to 5 after no land and then 5 land bauble hands. Turn 1 cast inquisition to see I was playing against affinity and took Master of Etherium. Arcbound with cranial plating and vault skirge with carnial plating made it a pretty short game. In came smash, Hurkyl's Recall, and pyroclasm from the sideboard.
game 2 Turn 1 swiftspear with a turn two clasm led to a one sided board wipe that carried through for the rest the game. swiftspear and a pair of stormchasers got the damage done.
Game 3: one island + serum visions and no other blue spells mulligain to 6
no land mull to 5. Pile shuffle one fetch with inquisition, kolaghans, terminate, bauble, serum visions. Fetch watery grave and serum visions and line up land for turn 2 we both have a bit of a slow start but he gets etched champion online with metal craft while I have 2 stormchaser's and Tas in play. I can swing for 8 needed 9 while I'm looking at dying to etched champion next turn.
Round 2 W/U tron with gifts 2-0
Game 1 inquisition taking path seeing I'm playing tron. Turn 2 stormchaser bauble, turn 3 stormchaser after combat tasigur. low on life he gifts into iona and unburial rites. Next turn gifts into unburial rites and Elesh Norn. I've got him to 2 life cast bauble remanding it and recasting it while digging for bolt no dice peeking with bauble let me see my next draw would be a land so cracked a fetch to shuffle. Draw another bauble and fetch land tron swings in for 15 and I'm still looking for a bolt when I use the second bauble and see the bolt I need with remand and spell snare to back it up. bolt for the win.
In Bloodmoon, Hurkyl's Recall, Smash out 2x Abbot, bauble, serum visions.
Game 2 turn 3 bloodmoon gets the win I cut off my access to black with snapcaster and hurkly's recall in hand. Eventaully drew a swamp and cast Tasigur to help with the offense. Using Azorius Signet he evenutally casts gifts that includes Wurmcoil Engine and Eye of Ugin. with recall in hand give him the eye and wurmcoil knowing he'll have to tap out to cast it and I can recall it on my turn swinging for lethal.
Match 3 Grixis Delver 2-0
Game 1: He's stuck with a one lander turn one fetch blood crypt inquisition taking serum visions on the play and casting buable. He top decks visions keeping 1 and bottoming 1. I use bauble to see he put delver on top. I add an island with remand in hand. Remand delver on his turn 2. Turn three I cast Bauble and see Tasigur on his top deck still 1 land. Cast snapcaster flashing back inquisition taking Delver. His turn 3 is a pass which leads to my turn 4 stormchaser with a third bauble. I have spellsnare in hand to answer his turn 4 young pyromancer.
side in dispels taking out abbot
Game 2: Bauble continues to let me out draw delver while leaving mana for counters or removal. Turn three he taps out for his Tasigur with one blue left (he knows I have terminate so I suspect he has dispel or spell snare in hand. One my turn three I cast liliana having him sac Tas. His turn four he casts molten rain on my bloodcyrpt re-dirrecting dammage to kill liliana. I play a land and cast swiftspear. He plays fulminator mage and casts bolt at my swiftspear in response to bolt I dispel to save swiftspear. in responce to fulminator I fetch a mountain and a swamp to go with my island and watery grave. I go ahead and cast kolaghans commad to kill the fulimator and bring a swiftspear back to my hand. Swiftspears and a stormchaser end up finishing the game off baubles kept me ahead on cards in hand while he was top decking.
I sided in pyroclasm and ratchet bomb but didn't draw either in time during game 2.
Over all I felt it was very competitive but couldn't see playing another 6 rounds hoping to get back into the prize money since I had the two losses so called it a day. I really like Stormchaser in the build and it felt like turn two stormchaser and bauble wasn't all that hard to get. Considering how well pyroclasm worked with swiftspear against affinity and I was so needing one while playing Goblins I'm tempted to swap abbot out for a pyoclasm or Izzet Staticaster to assist with swarms in the main.
I'm wondering if folks are still working on Grixis Prowess decks. Seeing stormchaser mage I figured people would be working on getting it into their builds. Right now I'm trying the following out for a build.
I'm tempted to replace bloodsoaked champion with Goblin Guide. When playing the champion it has been pretty nice in the late game. If both decks are top decking it's really nice to draw a stormcahaser or swiftspear and then attack with haste and end up returning the champions to play. In the early game it's also been fairly nice since the people I'm playing with have been reluctant to use removal that won't exile it when attacking if you have the mana available to return it.
I'd keep the Inquisitions and bring in duress. Inquisition of Kozilek will still hit the majority of the cards in twin mainly missing remand, cryptic command, and splinter twin but it hits all the creatures they want to combo with forcing them to cast it in response if they have the mana up and still getting another card in the process. In my case I'm splashing blue so I'd side in negate rather than bringing in duress.
I don't think I'd play Sculler in B/W tokens part of the appeal of Tokens to me it how it makes your opponents targeted removal fairly bad since they are trading 1 card for 1/2 or 1/3 of a token producing card. I think it fits in very well in a swords deck since it's a discard that can be equipped. That being said I could see it as a sideboard card coming in after targeted removal was taken out but I'd probably play duress in cases where I wanted to add more discard (combo).
In the main deck I'm still pondering -1 raise the alarm or either a spectral procession or a Zealous Persecution. Timely Reinforcements in the main deck has worked very well since I'm often getting full value out of it if I cast on turns 3 or 4. For the sideboard I'm tempted to take a zealous persecution out for Elspeth Tirel to add another sweeper. Narset Transcendent has been fairly good at digging when the game goes into top decking but has been really nice for rebounding Souls and Procession.
I'm curious on how Narset Transcendent's -2 interacts with the next spell being countered. My thinking that the if the spell was countered the rebound effect would have been lost at that point? If in response to the counter you cast an instant that isn't countered would that instant instead gain the rebound effect since timing wise it resolved prior to the original spell cast?
How do folks feel about Celestial Purge in the sideboard in place of enchantment hate?
I'm thinking some of the enchantments we'd not want to see would be valid targets for it illness in the ranks, virulent plague, Curse of Death's Hold, blood moon, splinter twin plus it could double down as creature removal. I'm pondering 2 of it vs. disenchant or sundering growth for the sideboard. The drawback being it could leave you open to other color enchantments and artifacts not covered by stoney silence. The benefit being it could double as Red/Black creature removal.
Thanks Trapped I hadn't realized the Enchantments hadn't come over. I could try it with out visions some more but it's been good for setting up Windbrisk Heights and worked well with Narset Transcendent's +1. I think it's been easier to hit spectral procession when I've cast Serum Visions on turns 1 or 2 but I could add a land, a Snapcaster, and an inquisition to see what that played like some more.
I'm trying to build up the motivation to take it to states but here's what I've been toying with for an Esper build. Serum visions I tried out on a whim and felt it made the deck much more consistent for turn three land drops.
I think you're right on Narset Transcendant. She really wants to be in a nearly creatureless deck to get the most use out of her. I was trying to see what she'd play like in the delver shell but I'm liking the idea of mixing her into token decks more. She's a card that plays better on T5 or later unless a serum visions was played and you know the +1 will draw something.
