Would you also do half the hand size? I think scry effects become extremely powerful, and multiple card draw versus no draw is pretty much game over.

It would be great to take all those cards, course they wouldn't be legal in the "Extended" sets that this will originally be set up for, but hey, who's counting. Did you even bother to read that portion of the proposed format? My guess is you didn't, and you still haven't. Please, I'd you want to offer critiques, read the proposed format first and then offer. Yes, I said it might be possible to piggy back these rules in to other formats, so maybe that is where you are focusing, but even still there is a major problem with your "analysis", that is not everyone plays like you. Yes, there might be some obvious choices, but there is still going to be considerably more diversity than say a high tide deck would bring.

I still think the most recent printing should be the rule, as this would be the "expectation" of future sets, and maybe corrections. Uncommons would still allow for a number of strong removal spells. With the upcoming release of the MTGO Vintage Masters, it would call in to question, however, how to handle the power 9 and so forth.

@Xyz: No, the mythic doesn't have to be JTMS. First, if it is the "Extended" format of cards, it's not even available at the moment (last 4 blocks don't include Zendikar). Even if there was Modern: Rarity Matters, yeah, sure, you will have some that use JTMS, but some that won't. There are a lot of strong mythics out there.

Additionally, like ANY format, if something becomes overpowered, there can be a ban list. So that is a good point. If we were to just look at the Extended range set of cards, what cards would be considered, if any, for the immediate ban hammer. I have been very distracted today, so I haven't given this much thought, but it is something that I should start thinking about as well. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any immediate bans.

I have some of the same issues. The players I know are either hyper competitive or very casual and not playing very often.

In regards to the rarity issue, that is a good point and I could see 2 options off the bat.
    1) They could fill either commonality role, giving them some versatility, or
    2) They would be considered to have the rarity of the most recent printing, with some notable exceptions such as FTV. Would have to consider Commander decks and MMA and other supplemental products as well.

I personally would prefer the must recent printing as the rule.
I appreciate the feedback so far, and remember, right now I am trying to get as much codified now before I present this to a group to test.

Not sure if this is a new idea our not, but...

I am trying to come up with a new format style. Something in constructed where rarity matters. In limited, rarity obviously matters, currently, in constructed, rarity doesn't matter. If you have the card, you can play it, no matter what. This is just kind of spitballing the idea, to see if others would think this would be a cooler style format, something where ingenuity and diversity play a key role. I am personally tired of, oh look, after his first two turns, I know exactly what deck they are playing. It gets old. Don't get me wrong, I like constructed, but I want something more. This is my first "idea", so let's see if I can get the ball rolling, and actually flesh out the format where there might be interest in it.

Standard deck size/sideboard rules in play for constructed: 60+ MD/0-15 SB
Singleton. This I think is also critical, as with the 4x you could still get very repetitive decks.
Rotating format. I like the idea of it being Standard, but I think with the additional restrictions, that might be too harsh. Since Extended is gone the way of the dodo bird, I figured I could just adopt that rotating format of yore.
Here is where the rarity matters:
    Main Deck / Sideboard
    Mythic: 1/1
    Rare: 5/2
    Uncommon: 12/4
    Commons: the balance

These numbers would be the maximums allowed. So MD could have 18 non-commons and sideboard could have 7 non-commons. Which is roughly less than half of non-basic lands that would be. Maybe even have it so you could have 2x of commons, but maybe not.

While I am at it, you could still do a rarity matters for any of the current formats as well, so it is not like it has to be what I am suggesting.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas? Go to hecks cuz I wanna play 4 Spinx's Revs?

  • posted a message on "Trading Post" - Anyone else dislike the new trading "forum" ?
I miss being able to search for multiple haves, or multiple wants, as well as searching for any other text other than the pre-set filters. (I had mentioned like searching for Zendikar lands, or emblems, and so on).
While I appreciate the effort that went into it, the search capability is not nearly as robust as it could/should be.

I added the last line on the first edit. When I click to edit, it doesn't exist in the section to edit....

It didn't. It does now. But I'll try it here. It may be you have to leave the thread and then go back?

Below, I'll have original last line. I'll edit. To add a new last line. Then I'll attempt to edit again.

    Original last line.

Edit 3: Nope, the first 2 edits are missing after I went out of thread and came back.

So I made a post, and I edited it. Realized after saving that I wanted to change how I edited it. So I attempted a second edit, but it only shows the original post, and not the newly edited post.

It's not going to be draw, and definitely not going to be draw every time a creature enters the battlefield. It'd make Ephara look like a chump.

If it is going to be silence, and edge of the world stuff, not to mention based somewhere on creatures (again, I am just gleaning from what others have posted), what about:

    Kruphix, God of yadda yadda
    2UG
    Indestructible
    Devotion Clause
If you had a creature enter the battlefield this turn, target opponent can't cast spells or use abilities until end of turn.

Or alternately, can't cast spells or use abilities during combat.

Wording would need to be redone. Maybe more like City of Solitude-ish.

  • posted a message on Trading Post questions
I guess subtlety of implied questions is missed sometimes.

    The questions are:

1> Was this functionality/search ability still available? (you answered that as a no)
2> If it was available, how do you use it? (See answer to #1)
3> If it isn't available, why? This is a functionality that retards the trading abilities of all involved. Now, you have to search once for each have, or each want. This is just not smart, so I am not sure why this Trading Post was implemented with such a loss on resources.

Since this is now in the feedback section, I'll add, the little scroll boxes are just completely annoying. Seriously, did anyone give any thought about the impact that putting up this Trading Post would have?

I liked the old style trade, as you could search for multiple haves, or multiple needs. Additionally, you could search for "oddball" searches.

For example, I am looking for Zendikar/Unhinged/Unglued lands, but unfortunately, I can't really search for those with the search function currently available (or at least I can't figure out how to do so). Whereas before, since the trading area was an actual thread, you could just search for key words just like in any other thread.

What about other exceptions. Currently, sexual predators can't live within certain distances of schools (at least in most communities), and in fact, have to sign up on a registry so people know where they live. So, if you truly believe that ex-cons should receive all their rights back, you should have zero problem having your family live next door to sexual predators.

The problem with this system as it is currently implemented is that a lot of people go on the sex offender registry who really don't deserve to have all these special restrictions. Nobody wants a mentally disturbed child molester anywhere near a school. But some people are only on the registry because they got too gropey with their secretaries, or even just urinated in public. (Really.) It does not make sense to put all these criminals in the same category. The law needs to make finer distinctions if it's going to limit rights so severely.

Doesn't really answer the question. Let's pretend, for a moment, that the sexual predator registry is perfect (and my mother-in-law is a social worker, and my wife is an attorney, so I know for certain that it isn't perfect), but let's just pretend it is...

The question remains, if they paid for the crime, why are they continuing to be punished by not being allowed to live in certain areas. What's really tough, is there are many communities/cities, where elementary schools are everywhere. So it "shoves" those people into certain neighborhoods only.

It's a red herring. Holder is off his rocker, and has been for quite some time. They threw all their might into trying to get George found guilty for Martin, but I haven't heard anything there. But black on white crime just gets swept under the rug.

The problem with ex-cons is, as you all said, they have this tag, this flag, and it makes them unfortunately undesirable to prospective employers. This causes them to not be able to work, and therefore living in part or in whole on government assistance, which, lets face it, is where the Democrat voters bread is buttered.

No, just giving the vote to ex-cons isn't suddenly going to make them see the light, nor make them suddenly more desirable as a prospective employee. It's going to give (for the most part), Democrats more votes.

However, I can't remember where (I think Pennsylvania, but I could be wrong), but I have seen at least one initiative where companies would receive a tax break for hiring an ex-con. This saves the company money, gets the ex-con employed so that he or she can prove themselves, and gets them off (or closer to off) government assistant. That isn't a perfect solution, but I think it is the right step, and the first step, in getting ex-cons re-integrated into society.

And I am not saying that they shouldn't get all their rights back at some point, but I think they should be able to prove they are back to being a boon to society. Integrate it slowly. A step down the line, but not the first step.

    My $0.02.

Bleed counters - You cannot gain life. At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 1 life.

All bleed counters would be that generic. The aspect, of course, is that you could do many things with it.

If your creature deals combat damage to a player, they get 1 bleed counter. (This would most likely exile the creature since it from a flavor perspective, has "latched on" to the opposing planeswalker).

You could also have more powerful spells that gives yourself Bleed counters. (Yes, that's a mouthful, I thought of Blood counters, but didn't quite like it. I am open to other suggestions). For example:
    Bloody Bolt - R
    Instant
Whenever you cast Bloody Bolt, you get 2 bleed counters. Bleed counters have: yadda yadda yadda.
Bloody Bolt deals 4 damage to target creature or player.

No, that would never be a spell with this mechanic/keyword, but I was just trying to get the gist of it out there.

Additionally, you could have spells that you couldn't cast unless you have a certain number of bleed counters.

    Vamped up Vampire - 2BB
    Creature - Vampire
    Flying
Sacrifice Vamped Up Vampire if you don't have at least 2 bleed counters.
    5/5

    Thoughts?

Hindsight is 20/20. I don't really think any of those choices are questionable except maybe Donald Brown over Ben Tate. I've been focusing solely on daily fantasy football this year, and this is my only team that hasn't suffered. Better lucky than good =)

Brown was definitely questionable, and I am not sure I would have McCown over Alshon as a flex.

That being said, I gave this league format a shot, and I don't particularly care for it, so I won't be back next year.

1> The double round of playoffs I didn't see coming til after I agreed (could could have been just a misunderstanding), but to be honest, when I draft, I look at playoff weeks, and I wasn't looking at weeks 13-14 in regards to that.

2> QBs in the flex position, there were several others that didn't see it coming. I actually did catch that before the draft, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

3> I know its a free league (or leagues), but there seemed to have been some missing trophies/derps during the middle of the season. Additionally, there was a post by deceptikon about posting the trophy leaders, which I don't think ever occurred.
3a> That is not to say I am not grateful for him hosting. This was my only league this year, and 10-2 (er, 10-3) is still not shabby. And I have hosted multiple leagues before for free (albeit, with no "super" playoffs like this), so I understand the work and effort that is put in.

4> However, if there is going to be a super playoff, then no "coach" should have more than 1 team. Having teams in multiple leagues is a> preventing other people from joining, and b> allows for multiple opportunities for a single individual that others do not have.

Good luck to all those remaining, and thanks again for hosting.
