This is the list I am considering for my next modern foray. As an old Legacy goblins player, I miss the aether vial and Goblin Ringleader, but understand the plan is to go wide and pump. This looks like an excellent mix it up deck for a week or two.
I am looking to play a version of this tonight. One question: Is gaining 3 life or getting a clue with the enchantment accelerators better than just pulling a land out at instant speed with Natural Connection?
I get avoiding Druid of the Cowl to play around sweepers, just wondering the consensus on ramp.
With clues and monuments, I did not have any problems casting Metallic Rebuke for anything other than U, though there is some merit to having a less situational counterspell. As for Cast Out, I have been tempted to run it as a catch all answer but did not because of the higher cost. I did run a couple Cast Out in the board.
So I see this has been moved to proven. I would say the best performing version is UW. For reference, here is a standard list from Jonathan Rosum's second-place finish at SCG Cincinnati Open:
As far as innovation, I saw a few different takes. Some opted to leave out Dusk // Dawn and added things like Angel of Invention, Archangel Avacyn, and Thalia, Heretic Cathar. Other than that, there were some differences in the sideboards. The stock UW list seemed to do the best.
So, what match ups have we found troublesome? I played the last FNM with this and went 3-0, with my toughest match up being the mirror.
That was my thought when I proposed the idea of going a human route: having the explosiveness of the human decks with the monument allowing us to go wider. It was just a thought and probably not great, but would definitely be RW and would not run Dusk // Dawn.
Is there any reason not to go a more human-centric route? It seems like we could maybe capitalize on the tribal synergies, or go more the flyer route as UW does. As it is, the mono-W version seems like a bit of a hodgepodge with no clear consensus on the best cards.
Apologies if this has been covered somewhere else.
Has anyone ever used Dead // Gone in their lists? I played this deck when it was standard legal and that card was fairly useful in that it doubles as removal and is a nice card to disrupt tempo until Skred can come online or we can find answers, protect planeswalkers, etc.
I am putting this together as an alternate deck because I remember how fun it was to play back then.
I have been all in on the speed up plan and the deck has served me well, at least in the shops I play at.
I might have an unnatural love for Bomat Courier because it has wrecked so many control players' days...
Maybe it is just luck and sub par opponents, but the deck has performed very well for me and I am surprised with how rarely it shows up in top 8s and 5-0s online. Is this just a deck that punishes inexperienced players or does it have the right stuff to take down a big tournament? I don't know, but I sure enjoy winning with it.
I had been thinking about Eternal Scourge for the grindier matches. Might have to give them a try!
Manzer420, I see your deck only runs 21 lands. Did you find that to be an issue? I run a build with roughly the same mana requirements and run 23 lands, sometimes sideboarding one out to lower my curve when I want to race.
I had been running 3 Incendiary Flames and 3 Shocks, but I am planning to go up to 4 Incendiary Flames because it is so good against Scrapheap Scrounger. The 2 Shocks might remain shocks or become Fatal Push.
