Sep 5, 2012god of cyanide posted a message on [152][Type 4][Budget] ╠ Stacked Between Walls ╣ Feedback WelcomeThanks for the spelling catches, though, as I said, that list is now in disuse. (SLE 1: Most of the spelling errors were from my original, written list being written in super shorthand... and the fact that I like a musical group called Empirion. )Posted in: Magic Between Walls (Cube, EDH, Type 4, Pauper)
The card with the question mark should be Sheltering Word... I think! Though, in hindsight, yeah, that's gonna get knocked off. (SLE 4: I decided to check, and I was right on everything.)
As far as sleeves, I had a box of sleeves I wasn't using, so I chose all the solid-colored ones and made a rainbow.
Keep perusing the list. If you have further questions, ask away.
Also, Aeon Chronicler isn't in my stack. (SLE part 2: It's unlimited free extra draws for which no answer exists in the stack.)
We don't knock it down because we don't make one giant stack. Usually it's broken into four stacks that get swapped in as needed.
SLE part 3: We have a phrase, "evergame," for the exact situations we try to avoid. For example, after someone once gained >100 life off of Ancestor's Chosen, it was deemed to cause evergame, and was thus removed. We have a watch list, as well: right now, Meishin, the Mind Cage occupies the top spot. We removed cards like Arcanis, Teferi, and Rimescale Dragon for similar reasons. -
Sep 4, 2012god of cyanide posted a message on [152][Type 4][Budget] ╠ Stacked Between Walls ╣ Feedback WelcomeWe play stack also. My stack is ~1400 cards, in intentionally mismatched sleeves. I haven't looked at your list yet, but I will soon.Posted in: Magic Between Walls (Cube, EDH, Type 4, Pauper)
Pestilence effects aren't horrible, as they deal damage to all players, but I can understand keeping them out.
Always be wary of accidental absurd combos. We have a few "infinite asses" - creatures with +0/+X abilities - in the stack, so cards that act off toughness can be a little tricky, especially when they provide beneficial effects.
We use a communal graveyard, and have a rule that cards lose ownership once they hit the yard. We also have ruled that "bottom of library" = exiled, but that may be due to the size of our stacks.
As I didn't look at your list, I didn't see if Decree of Silence is in there. We've socially discouraged anyone from using it as an enchantment, and it's absolutely amazing, since the cycling doesn't count as a spell.
We also start with some variable number of cards, but usually 2, regardless of the number of players.
Looking at your list now. You need:
Breath of Malfegor
Instant-speed card draw, like Opportunity and Inspiration. Even sorcery speed, if you draw enough, is worthwhile (Tidings). Also, card drawing artifacts are awesome - note Bloodletter Quill is just as good as Jayemdae Tome in stack.
(will add card tags later if you want)
Here's my last spreadsheet for reference. This is fairly current, though I stopped updating the sheet in favor of using iMtG on my iPad. Note that cards with no expansion listed are not as yet in, and a few sets' cards have not been added. -

@ tyler: i agree 100%.
@ nis: i feel i'm largely good about that. i'm very often the one to say, "well, we'll just have to agree to disagree," so we could maintain our friendship. the main front of assaults were from her husband, who kept calling me irrational and such, until finally cutting loose. -
Sep 20, 2009god of cyanide posted a message on Mythic Failurein fairness, neither the angel nor lotus cobra violate maro's "guidelines" as you've posted above. honestly, i'm more insulted at wizards printing warren instigator at mythic. if it dodged sparkmage apprentice, maybe.Posted in: B1ind Fremen Blog
i think draft/limited considerations are important when talking about mythic rarity. imagine a world where eight-man draft pods had multiple lotus cobras... by comparison, bloodbraid elf is far tamer in multiples in limited, as curves are higher, and you could always cheese on the cascade.
it's also not a utility card (like PtE is). generating extra mana is nice, but what are you doing with it...? without building around it, you'll waste resources - either with late lands that pretty much get played just to trigger the cobra, or by spending all your mana to burn out your hand.
is it a powerful card? yes. will people play it? yes. it still dies to every removal spell that kills tarmogoyf, and then some, as goyf's toughness usually saves it from burn. lotus cobra dies to every burn spell ever printed, every time. -
Sep 18, 2009god of cyanide posted a message on -2 and counting, or, when will 2009 end already?yeah, no doubt.Posted in: 1-800-cyanide line
to add in new developments: i spent the last two days setting my facebook status to messages letting "some friends of mine" know that i was unhappy with their recent behavior. (look up the lyrics to "disappointed" by public image limited for one such posting.)
this morning, my friend changes her facebook status into a lengthy attack on me, and going so far as to use my first name in it:
Quote from her FB message »Nothing is passive about my aggression- I don't allude to and whine about strife that I incite- and then act arrogantly indifferent, and yet somehow victimized. I wouldn't rather have cheerleaders than friends, or be liberal at all cost than intelligent. "The mediocre teacher tells. The great teacher inspires." "For the record" ***** the ONLY thing you can surely teach is math. Lion den indeed, and I'm the Leo.
see what i'm dealing with here? she also posts this on my wall:
You ain't heavy you're my brother, I still believe that you are. I will never forget how you stood up for me to my rotten mother. But the way you have handled this is unforgettable too.
i only replied to the wall post. apparently, one of my friends (ironically, the guy who wigged out about muslims weeks ago) attempted to defend me on her status, but she deleted his posts.
Quote from my reply »all i can say is it took two to tango here. didn't much appreciate being called an ignorant fool for daring to disagreeing with glenn beck. i liked, too, how i was the inciter, and how suddenly i'm not qualified to discuss politics, even though i've been following since before i know you. and i am ALWAYS unforgettable... -
Sep 16, 2009god of cyanide posted a message on Its a hollow feeling, you know?well, i read through the majority of the post, and i can fully empathize with you, as i've recently been through something similar that dragged on for the better part of nine years until this past april because neither of us really wanted to let it go, even though we knew we'd probably have to. in my story, i'm 7 years older than her (i met her when she was 19), and she was here attending college from greece, where her parents, hardcore greek protestants (a rarity there), wanted her to move back to greece to run their business and "marry a nice guy from the church." her parents liked me, but i'm not greek and i'm an atheist, so... yeah, i wasn't going to be part of the picture.Posted in: Elysium Blog
i'll tell you this much - if she stays with you, and this becomes an issue EVER again, run for the hills. i can't tell you how many times during those nine years these issues drove us apart (one time for eight months, during which i dated another woman to piss her off). you don't want to go through this once - don't make my mistake.
(i'm also a lot like you in that i'm not a woman-chaser to any degree. at 36, i can count the number of women i've dated on both my hands, and the women i've slept with on one.)
point being, let her do her thing. forget about the helplessness - it's irrelevant. if she's going to stay, she will, and you will be fine. if she doesn't, then she's gone, and you will be fine. no matter how much you feel your life is defined by your love for her, it is only a small part of things. focus on the things you enjoy in life, and never let a woman get you down - at least not in public. -
Sep 2, 2009god of cyanide posted a message on FML...update! looks like my female friend is out. her husband, who perpetuates arguments because he apparently has nothing else to do, just posted this on my FB page:Posted in: 1-800-cyanide line
"You seriously seem to be blinded by your political beliefs... (leaving out his "final shot" on this topic)... I'm sorry I just cannot continue to speak with irrational people, good luck in your pursuits."
boy, that sounds like -2 friends for me, including my best friend. if that's how it has to be... whatever. -
Sep 2, 2009god of cyanide posted a message on FML...maybe YOU should check in on beck and FOX news before you comment on them!!!Posted in: 1-800-cyanide line
1) i've been following glenn beck's career for the past few years (since he started on radio) as part of the work i've done on my political talk show. so i am QUITE familiar with him and his work. my friend, BTW, knows that. she ALSO knows that i have been paying close attention to FOX for a LONG time - since 9/11, in fact. now, i wouldn't expect you to know that, but you just assumed, and made an ass of yourself (but, not me). good job.
2) excuse me. FOX has been CAUGHT in mistruth so often that it's just about a daily occurrence! how is that distorted AT ALL? and, for the record, i DO have a level of respect for FOX because of the number of viewers - which is exactly WHY i am so virulent against their "journalistic" methods. the problem is not that it is "mainstream", the problem is that it is, AND calls itself fair, balanced, and news when it FAILS REGULARLY on all three accounts.
3) it's not what she - or anyone else - called obama that bothered me one bit. i'm bothered by the fact that someone who's been following politics for a few months - and by "following politics," i mean "watching glenn beck with her husband" - is telling her best friend - whom she has known to pay attention to politics for the seventeen years she's known me and then some - to "wake up" and watch moar beck because i provided evidence that disputed something in a glenn beck clip her husband had posted on facebook! she did not once give any sort of indication that she'd even read the information in the link i provided, and did not attempt to refute my comment other than that enjoinder.
if you are going to continue this discussion, please take it off my blog and to the appropriate thread (for FOX), or PM (for my personal matters), where i will choose to respond at my leisure. i will not allow you to make false assumptions or statements about me on my blog, and will report and/or edit out any content i feel appropriate if you continue to do so. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
Check the file, I updated the reminder texts now and added three new cards:
The Traveler (PW)
Daniels, Section 31 Agent (PW)
"Future Guy" (creature - of sorts - as he doesn't really do anything but provide "information")
Looked over your list. Thanks a million, brother, it's a major start!!! Gonna have to dig up the old school eps and watch to get the feel and flavor, but I agree with all of your suggestions (Sneers liked your DS9 suggests). The Vidiians I can probably do soon, as they were memorable to me. Should probably do the Hirogen as well... but I have to rewatch those eps.
Tossed Sarek's name out there not so much as a villain, but someone who I'd definitely like to make a card for.
Re: Barclay, I used to not like him, as well. In later days, I've come to appreciate Barclay because he is the one "imperfect" Federation member in basically the entirety of canon. Sometimes, you could get the impression that future society is either like the intro to 300 (kill off the imperfects) or fully invested in bioengineering to eliminate most of the "imperfections." One could argue Geordi's blindness... but he's got that visor, and they basically added later the idea that the visor is not an ideal solution for him, usually in episodes in which the visor is central to the plot. The only other "flawed" character - Data - has his flaws played for laughs, but he also is driven to overcome them. Barclay is realistic; he has issues and compensates for them on his own in flawed manners. I have some social anxiety issues as well, and I tend to deal with them in similar fashions - simulating conversations and interactions and the like.
I'm gonna respond to all the points you made later, but a few quickies:
- Misunderstood the "command" cards bit. Oops! I definitely want to do more of those... I need to find a way also to get this flavor text on a card:
"We really should have a directive for these sorts of things" - Jonathan Archer (paraphrased lol, he said this like five times, in five different ways, during the series)
- Khan and the augments need cards, indeed. I need to rewatch the TOS ep with him, and then catch Wrath of Khan again to get the full feel for the character. All the Soong/Singh/whatevers as well.
- Totally slept on Soran and Shinzon. Another two S-names we both forgot and need cards: Sarek and Silik.
- The Traveler is totally a PW. Daniels from ENT needs to be a PW as well. Other than that, I don't want too many PWs unless the character is above and beyond the abilities of the standard of their race. (Daniels gets it because of the time travel.) Future Guy would be hilarious as well, and is definitely a PW.
- I need to take a weekend and rewatch the Xindi arc to get the flavors of the Xindi races and individual characters. Degra ABSOLUTELY needs a card, as does the Aquatic starship. I think the five races of Xindi are easy color-pie matches: Arboreals: G; Reptilian: R; Insectoid: B; Aquatic: U; Primate(?): W. Degra is definitely WU, and the Arboreals' delegate is GW.
- My shout-out to the Mirror Universe is on Hoshi Sato's card. Empress, indeed.
LOL dude... That card was originally a Bird-of-Prey. I did some research and saw what you said about how they've flipped about time and again with Warbird and Bird of Prey. I really wanted the card to be Klingon, as the flavor of the card is very much in the Klingon realm - if they've got nothing to fight, they'll fight you and they're out. I'll flip it to Klingon Bird-of-Prey next time I hit the file. (I've got like 10 open sets right now, including the beginnings of a Contraptions set! )
Phasing and the Time Spiral mechanics seemed like good fits here, and I am a HUGE fan of all of those mechanics. We run some of the self-suspending cards in Type 4 and they're really great, so I made some more. The command theme ones (the "Counsel"s) came first, then I realized I should do them for the seconds as well, but have them be less powerful (and non-recurring).
Colors were hard in some cases because I wanted to fit both mechanics and flavor together, hence some of the odder costs (Phlox and Wesley Crusher come to mind immediately). Wesley and Kes were also hard to do because of the way the characters departed the show, and Tasha was very limited; I ended up playing off of the flavor that she repeatedly showed up as a cloned villain.
Barclay is one of my favorite minor characters in Trek (really it's him and Shran, and you've seen Shran's cards so you know how I feel about him LOL) so I had to make his card great, and my favorite episode with Barclay is when he gets whacked by the probe and takes over the world - that's the Monstrosity trigger. His "Maneuver" is the classic retreat into the holodeck fantasy that the character was famous for.
Just baddies. There are too many "villains-of-the-week" in Trek and my mind gets lost wrapping around them. I really want to get some of the more individual enemies and a little bit with the reappearing races as well. There's just sooo many!
I see Q as very Esper... His interactions with Picard are overtly Br (he behaves selfishly and seemingly impulsively) but have a strong WU/WB undercurrent (he's testing the human race and directly pushing them to be more than they are, using his powers to be a cosmic trickster with a purpose). He's also omnipotent, which would be difficult to put out on a PW card. His omnipotence was what kept my Q reference strictly to "Encounter with Q." I'll see what I can do with him as a PW. Probably a four-slot one. Note there are subtle differences between "Encounter with Q" and "Barclay's Maneuver."
I definitely want to make a Duras sisters card; they're some of the more memorable Klingons and were great characters. I definitely want to get more more ships involved as well, if only to not make Travis Mayweather completely useless.
No doubt, any assistance is greatly appreciated!
I'll certainly be around here more. I came "back" to MTGS mostly because I just acquired a MacBook Air courtesy of work and was debating getting some MtG software for it. I posted here and got crickets in response... never mind that I ended up paying $15 for a program that I can't seem to get working correctly. :/
I also tossed my Mirrodin-themed cube in the Cube section.
I have something you will definitely appreciate, Digi - and any input you have as to this is appreciated...

The card designs are mostly mine, with some help from my "sneering" buddy from NYCDK, (I think he went by "sneersforcheers" here, other "sneer"-based names in other places...) who is also a Trek fan. I have to say that, aside from the Borg designs, I'm really struggling to get good card designs for the Trek baddies. I'm also looking into cards for one-time enemies, but I'll have to do that on an episode-by-episode basis.
A few conventions I use on my cards:
- Animate spells/permanents are creatures and planeswalkers. Inanimate covers everything else.
- Freecast is an ability that just enables you to avoid the one-spell-per-turn rule in Type 4 (most cards with it have reminder text for it, but I need to update the reminder text as well LOL)
- To slowtap a permanent, tap it and it doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step. (Yes, I'm aware I screwed up with it's in the reminder text, fixed that and need to update images.)
Do y'all have a FB group?
I'm actually on FB but I'm using an account named "Godofcyanide Swansthresh" (the two main accounts I use in the Transformers: Legends game) mostly to keep in touch with some of my people from that game. My avatar is Acid Storm (who is just a redeco of Starscream, et al.) so it should be easy to find me. Let me know if it's not.
EDIT: I also recently started a forum for some of the old NYCDK heads and a few new jacks we've picked up along the way. I'll share that link via FB or some other less-public manner.
FWIW, when we had the [NYCDK] clan here, we were pretty much absent from the Clan Council and all clan activities. It's the kind of thing that's cute if you want to participate, but nothing but a drain if you don't enjoy those kinds of things.
EDIT: I just bought most of the cards to rock Jeskai Ascendancy combo during this Standard season.
When I wanted to build a cube, I had begun by posting some questions here. When I suggested I wanted to start "small" and build my first cube from a limited pool of sets... well, your responses were largely quite cold and/or rude... but I never let the words of mortals deter me. Along with the assistance of some of my Magic-playing friends, we developed the MirroCube.
I'm not going to get into any long-winded explanations about card selection or what not in the OP. If you have questions or comments, however, I will happily address them as you present them. We did try to set up a few "decks" in the list, and testing/force-drafting led to many changes, most notably being far more selective about the larger spells. If your favorite fatty isn't in my list, it was cut to avoid having this cube be a ROE "battleship Magic" type experience.
Some of the cards are somewhat pimped out, but I don't presently have it photographed. I might do it, I might not.
So, without further ado, the MirroCube:

How are you doing? As you see from my signature and custom... I'm running the table(t)s in another game now.
@ Digi and Macius: I had to disappear completely from Facebook due to a few issues, notably the issue that some people I know IRL are Internet bullies, even to their friends. I'll try and drop in here from time to time as I miss chatting with you fellas.
I've been using Decked Builder on my mobile devices, and have even paid for some of the extras. I recently acquired a MacBook Air (thanks to my employer) and noticed that there is a separate Decked Builder app for computers. However, the reviews seem to indicate that this is definitely a side project to the mobile app.
Does anyone here use/recommend it for OS X, or would you recommend some other app for collection management?
Thanks,
the god of cyanide
PS - I examined the Software thread and downloaded Dragon's Vault... and was dismayed to find that absolutely nothing will save in the app unless $15 is handed over. If anyone uses this, is it worth the $15? I have no problem spending but don't want to buy an app I'll wind up eschewing over something better that's already available.
Day 3 of the saga edit: Well, I decided to pay for Dragon's Vault and... I probably just got ripped off. The program claims that changes won't persist if you don't pay. Apparently, even if you register the software, it doesn't even persist on the computer, let alone your changes persisting from session to session. The help page was no help at all, and I only found an email address by finding the email of my receipt. Email sent, hoping for reply.
No, but I'm defending a group from derision it does not deserve.
Forgive me for standing up for others, but that's the kind of guy I am.
Jay, I have to amend my previous comment. I DO feel superior to some people. Why? Well, let's put it this way:
You say I shouldn't feel superior to others because of what I like and what I do. Well, the reality of my life (and my experiences; thus, my understanding as shown to me) is that those who dislike what I happen to like absolutely feel superior to me for it, and often, these people have zero problem providing me with friendly reminders that they believe this.
Whether it was various family members calling me a girl because I grew my hair out or not wanting to stand next to me in a wedding party for fear they would "catch" my "disease..." or my peers (then) physically and verbally abusing me and (now) assuming things about me that just aren't so because of a taste preference... Or the weird looks I get from people for the hair... Or, when I say I like heavy metal, people say, "How can you listen to that noise?"... Or, "Do we have to listen to THIS?" when they're a passenger in my car.
Yeah, they're not encouraging me to feel different from them, no. Should I feel inferior or superior to them? Personally, I feel much better being superior to them than inferior.
I generally say I hold humanity in a low regard; maybe this is biased towards Americans, but I find that people are more interested in dividing than uniting over silly things, and many have little to no trouble being incredibly harsh about it.
I'm not saying I should be venerated for my taste; I'm saying I shouldn't be denigrated for it - but that's what actually happens.
Perhaps, one day, people will stop being so divisive, and I will gladly get off any high horse I may be sitting on. But I have grown weary of being a "nice guy" about these things yet I still get **** on. My age has made me more of an "eye for an eye" kind of guy, for better or worse.
So I have some solidarity with the "hipsters," who are just people like you and me, just with a different aesthetic sense. They are still humans who need love and companionship, food and shelter, and thus are no different from anyone else where it actually matters.
I think you are misinterpreting me, actually. I don't claim to be superior to anyone.
I hate pop culture. I don't hate people for liking it. There's a distinct difference. (Edit: And I don't think I'm better than anyone else for liking what I like. I just have very unique and well-defined tastes, and make it a point to be knowledgeable about topics that interest me. My distaste for pop culture lends to feeling superior for eschewing it.) The same way, in fact, in which I am an atheist but hold no one at fault for believing in a god.
