  • posted a message on Do you play Mental Mistep, Lighting Bolt and the likes in EDH?
Mental Misstep: No, it often sits in your hand being a dead card.

But Lightning Bolt is amazing, I treat it as instant removal that is only 1 mana. It keeps its value throughout the game.

So you play the game, to have fun and not to win? Why did it matter that you lost to a combo player at 2 life I wonder?

Also who says some others might not have enjoyed the game even if you didn't?

I am all for being for or against combo, but at least be consistent in your reasoning.
    Why?

There doesn't need to be any reasoning for the way people feel about things.
Just because you think there's a hole in the argumentation doesn't mean people cannot feel that way about it.

You're playing MTG, the sole purpose of the game is about winning Confused
Also claiming that playing combo isn't caring about "having a good time" is incorrect. People have a good time playing combo.

What? No, the goal is not to win.
People play recreational games as a form of recreation, to enjoy themselves.

And good for them. It's the rest of the table I am talking about.

Honestly at this point the combo deck discussion is about as fruitful as the "Men should put the toilet seat up"/"Women should put the toilet seat down" debate. Both sides think they're "right". The reality is neither is right or wrong. As long as you don't complain at a sanctioned event about being "robbed" of a win because of a combo, cause that would just be plain silly. Degenerate cards are banned on the banlist, if they're not considered too degenerate, they're not banned.
When people act all "git gud" then there is a wrong side Wink

And no, that's not really how the banlist for EDH works.

Why is making the move that wins the game toxic? Because you don't like the method?
Yes, that is exactly what it comes down to.
Honestly, your entire complaint boils down to the fact that your opponent did not win in a way you like, so therefore it must be toxic.

You act as if you uncovered some deeply hidden truth. But yeah, that is exactly what it comes down to: We do not like it. We do not want to play against that.

Sorry, if some of us don't see it like you do.

    That is perfectly fine.
But that's no reason for you, or at least your side, to talk so condescending and insulting towards people that DO find it a toxic move.

Topdecking Exsanguinate would take me to 52 HP..
We're not talking about strong spells, we are talking about tutoring a combo.

as if you deserved it or something.

Yes, people that steal a win by tutoring an insta-win combo don't deserve it.
You might disagree with that, fine, it's a free country!

I just have a hard time taking many of them seriously.

If you don't want to take others serious then online fora might not be the ideal place for you to hang around.

    It's a game, dude. Relax.

And it's about playing the game.
Which is why "stealing the win" is lame and toxic behaviour.
It shows your opponents that you don't care about having a good time, it shows that for you it's only about winning.

You might have a hard time believing it, but for some people that is exactly the reason why they hate combo.
And isn't that what this thread is all about: Talking about infinite combo's and the reason for liking or disliking them?

Your response, while just 5 words long, is quite destructive to the entire thread.
You cannot ask people if they like infinite combo, then respond with "It's a game, dude. Relax!" when they calmly explain why they hate it.
Do you want a discussion or not?

"Oh, he won with a strategy I don't like, so he didn't win at all."

What a childish, toxic attitude. Even If I hated infinite comboes, I sit down with other people because I want to play with them, and respect what they want to play.

I feel so sorry for you if you get stressed so much over how the other player won.

Want to know what is truly toxic? Putting words in other people's mouth.

Don't even dare to use the word respect after that *****ty attitude you just displayed.
If you don't want to hear how others feel about infinite combo you shouldn't open a thread called "do people like infinite combos".

And no. Using infinite combo to "steal" the win is toxic, petty, and has no place in a game that I play.

I've played this card in my Azami EDH ever since it was released.
And trust me, this usually won't win you the game directly.

What it will do is win the game indirectly!
While everyone is freaking out about the Chronologist you sneak in the real dangerous stuff.

Are you really annoyed a mono black player beat your mardu deck with a bad combo?

But he didn't beat me, he won the match. There's a difference between those two things.
The top definition of beating someone is to be better, but he wasn't. He just topdecked a combo-piece and "stole the win".

And actions like that is exactly what many people hate in combo.
It's like playing a game of chess, flipping the table and declare you are the winner.

It depends on three things: What, why and when?

Do you have everyone locked down and do you use it to secure the win instead of pinging them for 20 turns? Fine, I can live with that.
If you have a meta that is all about combo I wouldn't mind too.

But yesterday I had a game with my Edgar Markov vs some Mono-Black control and other decks.
The MBC was at 2 life, Edgar was at 65 and had an army out.
So what did MBC do? Tutor for a Staff of Domination to combo with the Magus of the Coffers he had on the board.
That was just annoying and I am still pissed at it.

Thanks everyone for the help, I have a lot more to consider now.

This seems very nice to play with, and is all in the theme.

I'll definitely take a closer look on Emrakul.

How many mana rocks would play in a deck like this? I never play something that big as commander.

I play almost everything up to Sissay's Ring and the other "4 mana, tap for 2" artifact.
    That are roughly 17
Everflowing Chalice, Mana Vault, Sol Ring, Mind Stone, etc.. But I do count stuff like Semblance Anvil and Urza's Incubator.

    Emrakul, the Promised End

It's just soo easy to ramp and you keep throwing in big bodies at the opponents.
And I don't feel limited by being colourless at all!
It's quite nice for the manabase since I can include anything I want as long as it's better than a Waste.
But being colourless also makes the deck feel more special which makes it more interesting to play with it.

    https://edhrec.com/commanders/emrakul-the-promised-end

There you can find some commonly played cards, they are amazing!

I made a list of the 100 best silver-bordered cards (so far between Unglued, Unhinged, and Happy Holidays promos (including also the Grimlock promo from Hascon). The list is quite decent and playable. Lots of mechanics from these sets have been further developed in serious sets. Some cards have also been transfered into the black-bordered world. I'll see if I upload the list here eventually (am currently on my smartphone).

I am personally thinking about making a silver-borded sideboard for one of my decks.
The deck, at the moment, is quite silly and tries to create dumb situations.. Un-cards would fit perfectly.
Or perhaps it would become my go-to Un-deck and I just ask people if they allow me to play the deck.

But it would be lame if I spend 500 on a deck (that's the price atm) just to have my opponent deny it.

    I don't like silverborded cards.

It's like you say: Quite a lot are okay, like Goblin Tutor and Strategy, Schmategy.
Those are two I desperately would want to play.
But then you have a lot of problematic cards that are lame and I really don't feel like going through every single card and ban/allow them on an individual basis.

I like her! Especially in my Edgar Markov-deck she will definitely get that life back herself.
At the moment the ability is basically 3 life; but she will get easily boosted to 7/7 which makes the ability free.
