I haven't played it enough to know how optimal my list is, but I like it so far and it feels like it rewards good resource management. If there is any important wisdom not held in the first page of the primer I would seriously appreciate if someone would toss it my way, but for the most part I will be lurking anyway, so yolo.
Hello, everyone. I have been putting some work into putting this deck together recently, but would like opinions on something I wish to test. For lack of Lillies and to shore up the burn matchup, I am curious how you guys feel about running a few more creatures to add potency to a sideboarded Gnaw to Bone. The cards I am particularly looking at are Fiendslayer Paladin and maybe Mirran Crusader. If the manabase doesn't cooperate I might just settle for Phyrexian Crusader and Stromgald Crusader.
With these cards in mind, this is the list I intend to run for a couple weeks:
There are some obvious budget considerations (damnation vs wrath), but my intent is to risk having less control elements in favor of having a better gameplan vs burn and an easier time opponents on a clock when the need to race arises. I obviously need to refine it a lot, and possibly am just using an entirely stupid idea, but on the other hand... yolo.
Related to spot removal in the sideboard, I've been running against a pair of infect decks that mainboard both Apostle's Blessing and Vines of Vastwood along with one running a pair of Skites and Ranger's Guile out of the side. Given that these decks are almost always my last two rounds of play (very small event), is it outrageous to run Sudden Shock as sideboard removal?
I feel like this card can also assist against stupid vial shenanigans since two of the other decks I often face are Hatebears and Merfolk.
Well, I played at a super small fnm and went 2-1 facing infect twice and merfolk. I don't think I will bring tron back for a bit. It's just not right for the meta despite my love for the deck.
I was really hoping to face more grindy decks but of the seven people there wasn't even a twin and zero grixis
Curiousity, which version is more resilient to aggro: 23/2 talisman lists or 25 land lists?
My instinct says 25 land because there is less need to tap out turn two for a mana source but just want to be sure before I redesign my list to deal with a more aggressive meta.
Hello everyone, I am a player porting over from MonoUTron/Storm to sate my hunger for a tempo deck. I am currently investing in the pieces for this deck, but don't want to drop the full $200 for a playset of snappy's just yet. Is it possible to run more MD discard and Abbot of Keral Keep until I find the cash for Mr. Bolt-snap-bolt
Well, hopefully this knowledge will improve my performance for next week I suppose. Luckily I intend to have a more workable sideboard together before then too. I guess time will tell.
Ok, guys, I went to my fnm tonight and managed to do rather poorly. 1-2, rather disappointing, but it was a nice bit of practice. Beat Goblins, lost to loam pox and skred. (felt like I should have had both, but messed up some sequencing on the skred match and flooded hard both games against pox)
This lead to some questions.
Opening hand is something like: Steam Vents, Fetch, Pyromancer's, thought scour, Serum Visions, Serum Visions, Ritual.
Do I open with scour? that was my choice game one against Pox, which ended up milling an electromancer and a ritual. Was my call correct?
Essentially I am wondering if there is a consensus on what cantrip is best used first? I am currently running Gitaxian Probe, Serum Visions, Thoughtscour, and Sleight as my one drop cantrips for a bit of context
So, I glanced over the matchup section, but was looking for input on specific sideboarding (Note that I have the stock list from the matchup section running one less Probe and one more land to supplement my lack of fetches/shocks currently):
Burn
Affinity
Jund
Zoo
Dredgevine
Twin
LoamPox
I am a newcomer to the deck, but am comfortable with other storm decks from legacy. I am not worried about piloting it, just about what the SB should look like/how to do it properly. I can't run Blood Moon, so that is also another important note
Hey guys, I am a new-comer to this deck in search of some advice. I am playingg a stock list, but before I go diving in I would like a bit of match up advice.
In my meta I know there are at least two twin decks (one UR, one Grix), a twinning end deck, a loam pox, amulet bloom, and a dredgevine. There is also possibly a Merfolk deck, but that one I am not totally sure about.
Should I expect this deck to do well in such a meta, or am I more likely to crash and burn.
Also, with this knowledge, what sort of sideboard should I be looking for?
I'm imagining a roomful of magic players trying to wrap the tournament up before the swarm of locusts arrives.
That was a big portion of it. Apparently going within a couple minutes of time is not something everyone enjoys.
Since it seems you don't have 4 Chalice in your 75, I'd say more Chalice. I'm also a fan of Dispel, if you're considering more countermagic.
That was the advice I feared. Its probably for the best. That card was backbreaking tonight, won me every game I played it in... Fifty dollars shall disappear in exchange for cardboard rectangles!!
On a side note, I have been wrecking face a lot lately, has the meta shifted in our favor?
Just pulled 2nd at my local fnm with a record of 3 - 1, beating twinning end, grix twin, and amulet bloom but pulling a loss against LoamPox.
I ended up not even siding against either of the twin decks, due to various issues occurring outside the tournament that were enforcing a sense of urgency. Honestly, though, I don't really feel like I even need sideboard cards against Twin decks lately. They are easy to beat, generally, as long as I keep counter magic up.
With 2 Dismembers, a chalice, a cyclonic rift, and an aetherspouts main.
I feel like I need to switch the annuls and steel sabotages out, mostly because the two affinity players in my meta left. Also, Spellskite never feels like its worth swapping other spells out for. I always prefer having a hard counter to having skite on the field and its been doing well for me.
My favorite card out of Origins, as I have recently decided, is Disciple of the Ring. The card is potent when she works. So I have been brewing up a casual list with her as the main win con.
The idea is to keep using cantrips to get a nice fat grave, perhaps triggering the Mentor/Myth, and from there beat face with Disciple. I'll have access to plenty of control options because of her, and with how easy she is to pump i feel like I can generally close down the game rather quickly
If the deck turns out to be lots of fun, I might invest in a better mana base, but what are some other budget ways of improving this deck? Any ideas?
I am curious as to how many lands is considered the ideal. My current list is:
4 Flooded Strand
2 Windswept Heath
1 Prairie Stream
6 Plains
1 Island
3 Emeria, Sky Ruin
3 Ghost Quarter
3 Pilgrim's Eye
3 Court Hussar

3 Flickerwisp
2 Mortarpod
4 Path to Exile
2 Supreme Verdict
1 Wrath of God
2 Mana Leak

A couple more things before I gallop into the sunset: how does this deck perform vs Zoo and Little Kid Abzan?
Edit: Reread the matchups on page 1, found them both. classic example of me overlooking things.
Ignore me as I valiantly ride my monstrous insectile steed into the setting sun.
