What happens if I copy the second ability of Sage of Hours, removing 5 or more counters? I'm unclear if I get to take more turns or not.

What was the reasoning for the answer being no? I can't conceive of why you wouldn't be able to. Sometimes knowing that can help us give more complete answers.

To elaborate, you can target any spell that "can't be countered". Remand will just do as much as it can; in this case, you'll only draw a card.

You've got it all correct. For your last question, the ability is countered because its target is no longer legal.

They'll be able to return the forest or the land they search for. Ghost Quarter's ability will resolve before the Amulet of Vigor's trigger, so they can search for a basic and return that or the forest.

  • posted a message on Problems with ETB triggers.
I think it's really helpful in differentiating in this situation what is chosen when something triggers/is activated/is cast and what isn't. The following things are chosen when a spell or ability is placed on the stack:
    1. Modes
    2. Targets
    3. For spells, mana payment of costs
1 is for cards like Temur Charm. You announce which mode you're choosing before you choose targets, because the mode determines what the spell can target. This also happens with some activated and triggered abilities, but it always starts with "Choose", then a number of qualifier, like "one or more" or "two".

For 2, you announce what the spell and ability targets. This happens while the spell or ability is being placed on the stack.

3 only applies if you're casting a spell, but some spells (like Firespout) care about what mana was used to pay for them. The last step to casting a spell is to activate mana abilities and pay costs, so both players will know what went into casting the spell for these purposes.

Literally- LITERALLY- everything else on spells or abilities is chosen during their resolution. Note that your example, Clone's, ability doesn't use the stack at all- it replaces how Clone enters the battlefield.

    I hope this helps.

  • posted a message on When are targets chosen for a spell or ability?
Whoa, whoa whoa. No one said everything in a spell must be selected as the spell is cast; only the targets. Cultural exchange only targets players, which means you choose the creatures to exchange when it resolves. In this case, you'll notice that Cultural Exchange requires you to choose the same number of creatures to exchange, so in the scenario described, you'll only get 1 of your opponent's creatures. Which means neither of your scenarios is correct.

Note that this is because the word "target" has a special meaning in Magic. A spell or ability only targets when it says it does.

  • posted a message on What is all the hype with this card about?
When it was printed, I had no earthly idea why anyone would play Dark Confidant over Phyrexian Arena. After all, the Arena only cost 1 more, and had a far smaller chance of killing you!

On the converse of this, I always loved watching creatures get more and more powerful while people dismissed them as "dies to removal." I heard such arguments about Baneslayer Angel and the like, and this thread reminded me of them.

Yes. The Commander tax follows the rules for additional costs to spells, which means it applies while you're determining how much you have to pay for it, before the step where you pay for it (which is when Delve kicks in).

Often, that combo plays Prismatic Omen, which makes it work since it turns Valakut into a mountain.

Without it, it appears it wouldn't.

  • posted a message on Planewalker's loyalty counters shown
If I was the judge, I would ask how this wasn't noticed before. Did you not notice it when your opponent cast Ashiok and put no counters on it? I know the board state was complicated, but it takes several turns to get 8 extra counters on it. Seems like you had a lot of opportunities to notice that something wasn't right.

And as it's been noted, asking a pertinent question when the outcome of the game depends on it is far from trivial.

All that said, this method of noting counters on planeswalkers is pretty unorthodox and I'd advise against it generally.

So I'm allowed to look at my cards opponents chose with praetor's grasp?

No; only the player who is allowed to look at a facedown card can do so. What gave you this impression?

    Ok thanks.

Btw; is there a reference to the basic comprehensive rules that shows this too ?

Basic rulebook or comprehensive rulebook? Here's the comp rulebook quote:
508.4. If a creature is put onto the battlefield attacking, its controller chooses which defending player or
which planeswalker a defending player controls it’s attacking as it enters the battlefield (unless the
effect that put it onto the battlefield specifies what it’s attacking). Such creatures are “attacking”
but, for the purposes of trigger events and effects, they never “attacked.”

  • posted a message on How strict is the reveal face down rule?
    Quote from w1r3d0n3 »
You should always reveal the face down card at the end of the game. Even if your opponent knows the identy of the card does not mean the spectator does and he/she could just a easily call a judge and inform the judge that you faild to reveal. Resulting in the penalty.

Uh... the judge shouldn't issue a penalty based on the hearsay of a spectator. The judge should investigate and, in this case, find that no error was committed. I certainly hope judges aren't issuing penalties as severe as game losses without conducting an investigation.

It continues blocking and becomes gobbled by the wurm.

The only time that blocking legality is checked is during the declare blockers action at the beginning of the declare blockers step. Other than that, if something happens that would make a block illegal (like, say, giving the wurm protection from blue), it doesn't affect the block itself.
