Although I do kind of like this as a simic fan, I wish it was just worded like Fathom Mage and would trigger whenever a counter was put on it (maybe at CC4). Its just a shame a flavorful mechanic like Evolve forces you to overextend your board so much ... Simic should get some kind of green Rootborn Defenses or Wrap in Vigor variant.

I agree that Vorels general design is pretty boring and uninspired. With an interesting second ability, he would look less like "just a legendary Gilder Bairn".
I like him for EDH, though, since I always found Kraj to be a bit too bulky. Maybe I'll build a deck for him.
