Star Wars and Doom are story-based media, something Magic hasn't been since the Time Spiral block (the one bad story that convinced Wizards to give up on stories forever). In fact, I don't even like block structure any more, because Wizards can't even tell the stories within individual blocks properly. If someone asked me to describe the events of RTR or INN, I'd be stumped for anything other than "DRAGON'S MAZE" or "HELVAULT".

Time Spiral was a jumby mess known for killing off a few main characters, "fixing" Dominaria, and changing the whole idea what a planeswalker was, but it was hardly the downfall of the books. A combination storytelling via online media (like the planeswalker comics, Savor the Flavor, Uncharted Realms, and complete spoilers online), combined with horrible book sales killed the printed book line.

Maybe because NY and LA are the two largest cities in the country, and thus the "bad cops" aren't as thoroughly weeded out as having cops > quality cops?

Maybe you should cite some factual observations instead of stating something that may or may not be true: This is the Debate forum after all.

As a non-christian, I love the Christmas season. It's one of the few times that grumpy jerks might wear a smile.

Since you're Jewish (from your posts), I suggest you ask everyone else (in an humble manner, of course) to join you in celebrating Hanukkah (though it just ended), and then participate in theirs.

The really great thing I find about Christians is that if you aren't a jerk about them being Christian, they don't care too much of your worldview, even if you're a satan-worshipper (provided you can explain your insane view of the world, of course).

My Top Five (Not in any relative order)
    1. Toradora
I've been told so many times this is a horribly predictable show, but I was new to anime so I missed the big reveal. The way they do the reveal though, from the Crowning Moment of Happiness to the Crowning Moment of Sadness is such an emotional turn that it might be my number one series
    2. FLCL
Not a single show made me rethink the core message of the show like this one. I came to the conclusion that it symbolizes puberty. It's a strange mess where things are happening and you may never have control over what is going on. I love it, just love it
    3. & 4. Trigun & Cowboy Bebop
I put both of these shows here because of one reason, they are sound pieces of work with stand alone episodes but an over-arching back story that connect them all together.
    5. FMAB
Great visual, great story, complete ending. Easily a crowning jewel of anime. The downside is that once you see the entire thing it feels so so sooo slow to get to the big reveal.

    1. Is anyone else going to watch Akira on Saturday? I heard this was a great anime movie a few years ago and never got around to watching it, so I'm looking forward to it.

    2. SAO: What wasted potential for a show. Great premise and good start, but it got bogged down in creating a harem and bad romance for an anti-social character instead of developing a supporting cast.

    3. One Piece: I've convinced myself that out of the "Big 3" (Bleach and Naruto being the others of course), One Piece has the most potential, in my opinion, to be the most deserving of the three. But I don't like it. Maybe it's that I have not read it over the 6-7 years I've been reading/watching the others, or maybe there is zero end in sight. It just moves too slow for me to read/watch it.

  • posted a message on How To Resolve This Conflict
The OP has a few real options:
    1. Tell him to give the card back, and get the card back.
    2. Tell him to give the card back, but accept the $5 it's worth now as an acceptable replacement for what it was.
    3. Start with #1 or #2, get rejected on both, and then call the cops on him for theft.
    4. Do nothing

There is no "I get $40 back" rule, if there was I could get back all the money I invested in stocks back in 2007 before the recession. You had your chance to get the card back from him back then, and instead you sat on your hands. I'm sorry you lost ~$35 on a missed opportunity, but I'm really not. You should get some better friends, some friends you can trust to give back your stuff when you ask for it.

  • posted a message on Dual Land Ideas
Oh wow, I was not expecting this much discussion

    Quote from Piar
These are interesting ideas. The first is certainly more printable than the second. I'm not sure if the timing restrictions are enough of a drawback to being a dual, but its certainly possible. Thinking about your designs, I think there might be a more cube-able design to be had by unifying the two (with another bland name!):

    Stagnant Glacier
    Land - Plains Island (R)
(:symtap: Add white mana or blue mana to your mana pool.)
You may only tap Stagnant Glacier for mana during main phases.

I don't hate your idea, but it runs somewhat counter to the idea of my first card. What I was trying to do with card #1 was to trade an end of turn lightning bolt or combat advantage for early access to dual mana. Card #2 came up as the evil twin, to give control what they didn't get; early access to dual mana, but require they continue to play control.

Your card is great, but as Crimeo says below, it definitely requires the basic land subtypes dropped

    Quote from Crimeo
I don't think that the restrictions are sufficient to pay for it giving both mana AND having the basic land subtypes.

I think the restriction is sufficient to make it give both mana, but would suggest removing the "Island Plains" types, unless it is handicapped further somehow. An example of an additional handicap in exchange for the subtypes being there would be something like adding "This mana may only be used for casting spells." (not activating abilities), or vice versa.

I want to say I've found a pretty good handicap; I would think having a land available only during certain times would be just as much a handicap as paying 2 life.

    Quote from Guesswork
There are plenty of decks (aggro, combo) for which your first idea is simply Alpha duals #5-8. I think you need to find a more broadly-applicable drawback.

The second one is bad enough that I'm prepared to say it could be stronger. I also don't know if a full cycle is warranted. I might say, make it a single land with that drawback, and have it tap for any color.

I'd counter to say that both would be Alpha Duals #5-8, but neither card warrants a full cycle. Red/Green aggro/ramp decks would find #1 handy and #2 pretty worthless, while Blue control decks would see it just the opposite.

    Quote from harlannowick
These duals seem too strong as they are effectively original duals in whichever deck runs them. But if we combine them to make...

    day glacier
    land - plains island
When ~ enters the battlefield, you may transform it.
You may only tap ~ for mana during your turn.
When ~ is tapped for mana, transform ~.
    /////////////////////////////////////
    Night glacier
    land - plains island
You may only tap ~ for mana during your opponent's turn.
When ~ is tapped for mana, transform ~.

These are still really sweet lands, but most decks won't be able to effectively use the mana on every turn making it significantly weaker and in my opinion, more interesting.

I'll give you 11/10 for creativity, but I'd hate to see the state of Magic if this ever found its way onto a real card.

Thanks for the comments guys, keep'em coming!

I figure someone had these ideas already.

    Sorcerer's Glaicer
    Land - Plains Island
You may only tap ~ for mana during your main phase.

The Good: Untapped mana of two colors that isn't at the level of the originals.
The Bad: Not likely to be played in control decks.
The Ugly: The name's crap, but it's intended to be generic.

    and

    Imposing Glacier
    Land - Plains Island
You may only tap ~ for mana during an opponent's turn.

The Good: Gives control players access to good dual colored mana.
The Bad: Doesn't give mana if you aren't playing an instant or flash card
The Ugly: Again, the name's crap, but it's intended to be generic.

Thoughts? Too OP? Would never see play? Wizards should print ASAP?

  • posted a message on Ordeals and Portent of Betrayal and friends
Player has a creature with two +1/+1 counters and an Ordeal. Opponent plays Portent of Betrayal, then attacks.

Who gets the Ordeal's effect, the original player or the Opponent? I was pretty certain before this evening that the Opponent got the ability, but another forum mentioned the Opponent doesn't gain control of the enchantment, thus when the opponent attacks and triggers the enchantment, you still control the card and thus are the one sacrificing it.

Of course I also heard that if you gain control of a creature, you also gain control of all enchantments attached to it, which doesn't make much sense to me.

A lot of things have been discussed to death on here. Mythic Rarity, Singles Prices, X is overpowered, X should be banned, Blue is OP, Why Do Magic Players Smell so Awful?, Why are there no women in MTG. It's really hard to find or start a topic that gets an I depth discussion that hasn't already been talked to death, or validates that kind of topic.

I'll mention the mods have done a fantastic job with the forums though, there are very few places on the internet that have this much traffic, aren't million dollar corporations, and aren't full of posts that usually contain a four letter word and are directed at an op in a negative manner.

I would guess that yes, they can.

    1. They don't have a large collection of these cards they can pick up from Wizards and walk out the door with. In all likelihood Wizards has a testing printer to create test cards. "Actual" cards would have to be opened the same way as we and dealers get cards, by cracking packs or buying on the secondary market. And if they are walking out the door with cards like this, that's stealing

    2. The Secondary Market isn't government regulated, so there isn't such a thing as insider trading.

On borrowing singles, I'll let the card go if it's just for the evening or event if I am present. If they are going elsewhere, they have to be present on a usual basis, be willing to take a picture with the card, and then sign a sheet they'd bring it back in same condition (within reason) or pay SCG price for it.

On borrowing decks, I keep a budget deck for newcomers, and that's it.
