Lots of tournaments in my area for modern! So yes, lots of paper magic going on in Montréal.
Imho, it is economically a good decision to play modern and not standard. Why pay a lot for over hyped cards that won't last long when you play standard?
I chose to invest in modern and be able to enjoy for cards for as long as I like playing them (unless there's a ban...).
Need help!
I'm currently playing a UW Flash deck in Standard, and want to be able to Play Modern Competitively.
Favorite Playstyle: Midrange, Control, Combo
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): Local Tournament
Favorite Cards/Colors: Blue and Red, Snapcaster Mage
Budget: $400-$500
Staples Owned:Snapcaster mage, Hallowed Fountain, Restoration Angel, Sphinx Revelation, Huntmaster of the Fells, Stomping Grounds, Steam Vents, Lotus Cobra
Although I have the UW staples, I'd want to veer away from this archetype and play something with Huntmasters as a set. Something like the old Naya Saber?
Your inputs are greatly appreciated.
With the cards you have and the playstyles you like, WUR midrange seems like a no brainer. Have you consider naya pod (aka kiki pod)? Or twin?
I suggest you play a deck you like! The more you like your deck, the more you'll play it. The more you know how to play your deck, the more you'll win.
After the recent bannings, I don't know what to play anymore... Should I build new with old? Or start from scratch? I decided to keep brewing with jund shell. It gave me doran-jund. Fun is fun (it hasn't transformed into win yet).
In defense of PtE, there's so little basic lands in modern (from 1-3 normally). Giving a land to your opponent feels bad sometimes... But remember you can mitigate this effect by casting Path to Exile at the beginning of you opponent's turn giving em a tapped land instead.
Hand disrupt is key to victory. Duress and Iok can fall short sometimes... Bad draws and dead cards should be avoided.
As mentionned above, Thoughtseize is totally worth 2 life for being able to distrupt consistently! Ideally something like 2/3 IoK - 2/3 Thoughtseize. Later in game, hand disrupt becomes bad draws...
The biggest star in my jund SB has been Olivia Voldaren in the past months. She eats Wurmcoil Engines and let you get that W vs Tron. It's a meta call.
Fulminator Mage/Molten Rain aren't that good VS Tron. Tron deck are packed with land fetch cards. [CARD]Sowing Salt
[/CARD] gets the job done!
Rule of Law is also really strong vs storm. It gets you another turn vs Infect... Splashing W, right?
Anyone have any good tips on the Splinter Twin matchup?
Thanks to Deathrite Shaman, turn 3 Slaughter Games is not impossible. Thank god, SG exists! This card saved me so many times! Along with Abrupt Decay, IoK, Thoughtseize and LotV, you have a good chance of winning that MU.
I try to have 3-4 cards in my SB for my toughest MU as Jund (Storm, Robots, Scapeshift, Burn, Eggs and Tron).
Am I allowed to sacifice a 1 cmc creature (birds of paradise for example) into Spellskite and redirect PTE to it?
I've heard the stack argument pulling this situation in 2 different directions...
The way I see it, PTE goes to stack. In response, I use B Pod on BoP (transforming BoP into Spellskite). Once Spellskite hits the battlefield, it eats PTE.
Long story short, does Spellskite come in too late?
Anyone know if scavenging ooze could possibly get printed in this set? I know it's not likely even if it were possible, but I just wanted to see if was even possible. I think scavenging ooze needs to get into modern.
It's called modern masters... There won't be a legacy/edh only card in it.
Dark Confidant?...In standard? IT'LL BE COMBO WINTER ALL OVER AGAIN!
Seriously though, I highly doubt Bob will ever get a reprint in standard.
Maro was asked that question before and his answer suggest that dark confidant will not be part of standard format anywhere soon.
What he said: ''I like Bob (the card and the Hall of Famer), but Dark Confidant is a little bit too good to repeat. (Take this with a grain of salt as I'm horrible at judging power levels.)''
Don't get me wrong, Naya pod is a solid contender.
First modern deck I built was Robots. After few sessions of domination, everyone started packing artifact hate. And for a good reason... Suddenly, Robots wasn't so good. It opened up space for combo and other decks. After few sessions, everyone started playing combo hate, gy hate, etc. And for a good reason. It's kind of a circle. 60 cards deck and a SB of 15 cards won't cover every possibilities but you can try to predict weaknesses and try to exploit them.
If you know there are good chances you'll face a meta that is not favorable for your deck, don't push you luck and play something else.
I'm not a fan of the new Tarmo. I'm interested to see if they reprint Dark Confidant with new art though. The current art is fine but it would be sweet if they reprint him with a more dark/underground art. I thought we were getting a Dark Confidant reprint when I saw the art for Increasing Ambition and also when I saw the art for Diabolic Revelation, those would have made a sweet DC.
How can you not love new tarmo?
The image is nice but not mind-blowing. Best part is: "What doesn't grow dies. And what dies grows the tarmogoyf." I'm not a fan of future sight card's new frame...

Other options:
Yes it is still playable but giving a land to your opponent is bad in certain MU.
Sowing salt for lands
Olivia Voldaren steals wurmcoil
Stony Silence against eggs and O stone.
Blood moon?
T1 hand disruption is extremely important.
Fulminator mage, Molten rain, Magus of the moon are rather weak compared to Sowing salt.
Tron is a tough MU for jund. Not impossible but tough!
How does Pod do it?
By being faster than a tron deck. I play Melira pod with Phyrexian revoker, Aven Mindcensor, fulminator mage, Sigarda, Host of Herons and thoughtseize for that MU.
Kiki pod is more explosive imho.
Good list. You should get good results.

I agree with you on Dark Confidant. I thought he was getting reprint in RtR along with Noble Hierarch.
