I'm looking at Goblin Electromancer and he looks like he's made for Overload costs...alongside him I'd run Mizzium Mortars and Cyclonic Rift for burn/bounce. However, I'm not sure about these.
The deck is for a casual format using all of the Legacy-legal sets. I'd like it to run as optimally as possible; burn/disrupt/counter(? Not sure if this is really Izzet territory)** with beats from the Weird and Magus. Hypersonic and Niv should wrap the game up.
**I see a card from Dissension, Odds//Ends, which is sort of countering, and very much in the Izzet flavor.
I don't see any need for Koth in this deck. If you ran something like Kargan Dragonlord, Thundermaw Hellkite/Inferno Titan or similar Big Red creatures, I'd go with him. You have enough resources to make the Phoenix a constant threat, so stick with the firebird. If you keep Stormblood Berserker, Volt Charge will be useful. You might consider Nivmagus Elemental as a sideboard card. It would be effective if you go against someone running counters. Plus it benefits from Volt Charge.
I wanted to build a red aggro deck for my local Modern games. I like Thundermaw as a finisher and would prefer more stable creatures as my beats, versus the quickies that are Hellspark Elemental and Keldon Marauders. I am open to any suggestions to improve the deck.
One thing I have been thinking on is Grim Lavamancer. Perhaps Figure of Destiny would be better in that slot? Some old, old Big Reds ran it back in Mirrodin Standard (circa 2003 I think?).
This is my rough idea for an Izzet deck; I really like that we finally got a pretty aggressive Weird. Plus he can get big off of the deck. He and Nivmagus are the offensive base. The wincon is the classic Firemind/Curiosity combo.
My side plays around with Goblin Electromancer. Every card there is designed to benefit from having multiples of him on the field, with the exception of Epic Experiment. The looting from Lighthouse is a great tool for this deck.
I would like you to keep Blistercoil/Nivmagus/The Firemind as the core of the deck; it’s the spell lineup I am concerned with. Do you think Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius would be a worthwhile addition to the deck (removing The Firemind/Curiosity to incorporate him, of course)?
If I switched Firemind/Curiosity for Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, I would gear the deck toward burn/draw with muscle from Weird/Nivmagus/maybe another creature with 2x Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius as the finisher. Suggestions on this plan?
-Nivmagus Elemental
-Blistercoil Weird
-Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius(or Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind; I like both so its your choice. Whichever is easiest for you to use in your construction)
-Hypersonic Dragon
