To the person who started this blog. Kudos to you! Some system that rewards players/collectors should be done if they abolish the reserve list.
Your idea may or may not work, but I like the idea of Wotc finally rewarding players and not their corporate pocket books.

****Damagecase's arguments make the most sense out of everything I have read on this blog.

If the game has no value, the game will cease to be

    Prove it.

***Well This is true. Please see stamp collecting, baseball cards, comic books (which can be played with), and beenie babies.

Sure they could reprint all your cards into oblivion tomorrow but have fun playing with yourself.

This would not happen. The opposite would.
***This is mostly true. The big boys will survive a mass reprinting and stores that did not invest in reserve list cards would also survive. However stores with
a massive supply in Legacy staples would be in big trouble. The margins are already thin for your LGS. It is likely that many of your local gaming stores would go out of business.

If you wanna invest a bunch of money to pass the time and then have absolutely zero chance on any kind of return beyond "the fun of it" be my guest and see how far that goes.

It has been going for me and many, many, many thousands or possibly millions of players, for decades. And it will continue to be for, predictably, decades more.

*** Again Damagecase is correct, overall. There are some rich players or altruistic players that might be an exception, but most people expect some type of return for their cards. Remember that most people pay 90-100 dollars a booster box shipped or picked up from the
store. So why on earth would you pay that much for cards that have no value. You realize that monopoly can be had for 20 bucks. Dominion can be had for 30-40 bucks. Why on earth do you pay 90-100 for
magic cards. Could it be that they hold some value?

I would, however suggest a pass time like become an alcoholic if that is all your going for.

and I would suggest you to **** off and shut up. Your suggestion makes no sense, mine is at least constructive and improves the community.

Further, how are the Yugioh numbers these days? Lots of tournaments? Huge payouts? Is doing as well as magic? That I doubt.

***Damagecase;s yugioh example is correct. A better example is the game "Force of Will" - It is like magic, Yugioh and pokemon. The company over-printed and dropped 100 dollar cards to 10 bucks or less
through mass reprints to satisfy corporate greed and players who wanted mass reprints. People lost confidence in the game holding value
and now the cards are basically worthless. You can now pick up booster boxes of Force of Will well under dealer cost.
No idea, it is one of the few card games I actually never played. Relevance?

Yes it's immensely diverse but what is two life against sneak show or reanimator or dredge?

*** The only case where damagecase is wrong. Two life does matter. Legacy is a game of inches.

Most of this post is nonsense.

Second hand sellers provide a place for you to play MTG. They make
most of their money selling singles. Contrary to popular opinion they do not make that
much money off sealed product due to most of you buying on the internet. Wotc makes a ton of money off the secondary market.
Why on earth do you pay 100 dollars for a booster box, otherwise. If you don't want to play a collectible card game, please see Dominion, monopoly or chess. Most players are collectors and vice versa. This is a collectible card game.

It is comments like this that I am glad that the reserve list exists. If they ever got rid of the reserve list, people would sue Wotc and Wotc would lose. They would lose millions and millions of dollars. Think about it.
People sue because the coffee is too hot or they got too much ice in their drinks. Yes, they modified it twice. That is true. But in their last announcement, they closed all loopholes and changed the language. I can tell that the language was written by a lawyer and it now stands.

Second eternal masters can be had for 175 a box and it is full of legacy staples.
tutors, mother of runes, sneak attack, force of will, sinkhole, entomb, sylvan library, wasteland Jace, top, Karakas, mongoose was printed at common for heaven's sake. They even reprinted chain lightning, plow, cabal therapy in the same set. There
were powerhouse cards printed for pauper, EDH and cube. Wotc did a great job in design. You ARE NOT GOING TO GET 100% OF LEGACY REPRINTS IN SET. Eternal master's already pushed the envelope in terms of reprints. They went overboard all of you should be happy. All the whining and belly aching is unbelievable.

Lastly, the price has dropped to 7 per pack. You have greater chance at pulling value out of an eternal masters's pack that then any 4 dollar standard booster.

There are more legacy staples in eternal masters than conspiracy by a mile.

I think you are wrong about the investor not wanting to trade in a card. Remember that investors are not players like us. They are in it to make money.
So the investor would trade their revised tundra for 8 new tundras with security features and then sell them for 40 bucks a piece to new players. You as an investor would make money. If Wotc reprints tundra, you as an investor lose money, since Wotc is the one doing the selling. Not only investors, but I
think many players would trade in their dual lands (save one of them for sentimental reasons) for extra tournament legal copies.

Additionally,as long as Wotc destroyed or took out of circulation the revised tundra, the collectors who own revised tundra would see increase in value due to scarcity similar to alpha and beta cards. Overall, investor or player in most cases makes the profit and not Wotc with excessive reprints.

If fakes get too good, (which is debatable) but as some players on this site point out, what is the difference if you can not distinguish between them. Some players might want to get ahead of the curve.

Remember, I mention "or other thing". The other thing Wotc might do is do away with Legacy and the reserved list all together. It's called
"no reserve list Legacy". I would not put it past them to that. It would make many players mad, but I can see it. In my opinion, which many of you
disagree with me, I think it's a trade-in program or no-reserve list Legacy becomes a thing. That is what I think will happen in the long run.

I could be wrong and they could do nothing. But I think long-term Wotc would be costing themselves lots of money by not doing something.
All my statements and predictions above assumes that that the Reserve list is law or unbreakable and that counterfeits get better and better.

    response to CharonsObol comments.

A trade-in program or something like it is coming whether you like it or not. I am just trying to speed up the process to save Legacy. It is either that
or MTG will stop being a collectible card game outside alpha and beta, which could happen. Once that happens though, they will not be able
to charge a premium for their product.

The secondary market is all about confidence. Once that collapses, Wotc is done and finished.

When/if the counterfeits become too good, they will be forced to do it. Abolishing the reserved list won't get rid of the counterfeits like
everyone claims on this "website". That is the popular opinion all over the web. The counterfeiters are now faking full art lands, Kaladesh, Khans of Tarkir, SOI and Battle for Zendikar cards. The fakes have the hologram too. Those cards are still in print. It's only a matter of time before they are wide spread. Maybe they are widespread already for all I know.

It does make business sense for them to do it or something like it. They will do it just because they are forced to and not because they had the foresight to. And Wotc does care about the secondary market, but they don't advertise it on purpose, because that opens them up to a new set of tax laws that would make MTG a registered asset. They are doing everything they can to avoid this legal characterization. This is why they are careful with their language.

    From Wotc website.
"WHAT IS A TRADING CARD GAME (TCG)?

Trading card games (TCGs) like Magic: The Gathering combine collectable cards with a strategy game. You build your collection of cards by buying products such as Booster Packs or Intro Packs as well as by trading your cards with friends."

The word collectible has meaning. For example, the game connect 4 or scrabble is not collectible. You can get all the pieces easily.
MTG is collectible. You have to collect the pieces. Some pieces will be common and some will be rare.

Again, I am not against reprints. It's like hitting a brick wall with some of you. Legacy will indeed die off without support. For that we are in agreement. I am trying to get people to see that a trade-in program could solve supply issues but give fairness back to the players. I don't understand why you pay so much for cardboard otherwise. I mean why not reprint every set over the last 25 years in 4Xplayset and Wotc can sell them for 15 bucks each. Then you can have all the pieces on the cheap. Where do you draw the line? Some of you will say 100, some will say 50 some will say 10 for each card is too much.
And who should be the one to benefit from a collection. Wotc or you the player. I am not going to post again. I just wrote this so that people could think about it. It should be about the players/collectors benefiting and not just Wotc.

And as far as standard is concerned, Wotc saw something bad in the numbers. I don't know what they saw, but I bet less people signed up. They rarely change behavior because of player complaints. It's all about the money. Never forget that. For example, Microsoft defended Vista to the very end despite complaints.

Artificial scarcity - It's a collectible card game. It says so in the MTG manifesto. Again, I am not against reprints, but the players need to benefit first. Legacy needs to be cheaper. It is that simple. But how you do it matters.

"theft" is used as a hyperbole. - I am trying to make the point that there really is no reason people should be paying high prices
for cards when Wotc is/can/will reprint your collection to oblivion. I don't understand people's behavior. It's going to happen with the current business model.
There are a few discouraging events Star city is cutting back on the open series for Legacy and Wotc just announced changes to standard for
rotating sets. Do you all know what this means. It means that MTG is on the plateau or in decline.

And as far as Legacy is concerned, I am trying to push a trade-in program to get more copies to the player base. It does not have to be a trade-in program. But there must be some mechanism where the players benefit first and wizards second. People are now debating on Reddit when to buy Snappy.
I can save all of you time. Don't buy it. They will reprint this card to death. Wait! just wait it out.

I once knew two people. Let's call them Timmy and Jane. I used to argue and have heated debates with both Timmy and Jane about the
reserve list and too many reprints. They gave all the same worthless arguments "like wizards needs to make money", "the reserve list is stupid"
"why should I pay so much money" blah blah blah .... Timmy and Jane were standard/modern players. A year ago Timmy blows hundreds of dollars on
volcanic islands for a red/blue delver deck (modern conversion). Jane about 6 months ago spends a bit less for 2 taiga's, a Savannah and a plateau for zoo.

You should see how Timmy and Jane now defend the reserve list. It's like night and day. I even saw Timmy lecturing some young person 5-7 years his junior at FNM on the importance of confidence in the secondary market and the reserved list.

The judge promo (second one btw) reprinting dropped it to 15 and eternal master's finished it off. If it was never reprinted it is easily a 30-50 dollar card.
To believe anything else to be "fair" is incorrect in my opinion. It's a chase rare with a powerful effect.

The judge promo is an acceptable reprinting. The eternal master's printing was stealing. To all the people who paid 120 or more dollars for the playset I am sure that you were ecstatic that wizards stole 100 bucks from you. When stores buylist the card at 18, I am sure they are happy too.

Reprints kill prices, period. Anyone who points out some rare event where reprints actually increase prices are really
illogical people trying to be smart. Overall, they lower prices. If they did not lower prices, why would people want reprints? You only want them, because they are cheaper. Look at the card Vindicate. It was a 30-50 dollar card and now you can get it for 5 bucks. That whole set, Apocalypse is basically worthless.
All the people, who bought the card and paid 50 bucks were dumb. In my opinion, once a card hit a certain status, the card should have limited reprints. Wizards just stole from those collectors with a mass reprints of vindicate.

I used to be against the reserve list, but after seeing Wizards print every good
card from the silver age sets to oblivion, I am now for the reserved list. All of you modern players are
screwed. Instead of focusing on the reserved list, you should be asking how your cards can be added to a
new limited reserve list. Wotc will raid your collections and they will do it within the next 5 years with greed in their eyes. If you paid 200 dollar for Lilly -
best wishes to you. If you paid 75 dollars a fetch -good luck to you. If you paid 60 for snappy - Wotc will flashback your money right into their pockets.

I could support a trade-in program though where you can trade in your underground sea for 12 copies
or so with security features. It's time that players and gaming stores benefit from
paying hundreds and thousands of dollars to wizards. I am tired of paying 40 dollars for a card
only to see it plummet with a reprint. I am tired of paying 90-100 dollar booster boxes only to see
the chase mythic reprinted in a duel deck or commander deck. Everytime Wotc reprints a card, they are just
stealing from your collections. This is a collectible card game. Some decks you can't play until you have collected
the cards. It is simple as that. You can play legacy with a mono-colored deck or you can innovate instead of net-decking with mardu
dual lands which can be had for like 40 buck or so ebay. I am not against reprints, but Wotc needs to be more
responsible with them. Chase cards should not be hit more than 20 percent tops. Oh and Master's sets that people think are "limited" are not so limited. These sets are also heavily printed but the big vendors are hoarding them.

And the new sets from Return to Ravnica and up are being printed to oblivion. Just watch. MTG will be like 90's baseball cards. They are pumping out too much product and the existing player base is taxed too much. I am getting sick and tired of players saying things like "Wizards can make so much money off reprinting duel lands" "Wizards needs to make more money"
Everyone needs a reminder that wizards or Hasboro executives are millionaires. You the player who spends more on MTG than any other game in your lifetime need to benefit from your collections and you the store owner need to make more money. You the FNM player needs to reap some benefit from paying 16 bucks every Friday. In most games, I can pay 16 bucks for a lifetime of game play. If I pay 16 bucks for card board, it better be an asset later.

For the most part the reserved list has been successful for collectors. Notice, the prices are the highest on reserve list cards. It is because of confidence that prices remain high.
They should add 5% of each new card from each set to the reserved list to keep the game collectable. In case I hear alot of whining. Magic is a really cheap game to play.
You can go on ebay and spend 20 bucks for thousands of commons and you can play mtg. Who cares if you can't play Vintage, Legacy or Modern.

3/2/1 is the way to go. If you go 4/2/1, sure you can get more variance, but 3/2/1 will give more consistency than 4/2/1. Think about this. How are you going to draft this with 8 people. 3 times tops in a year.
If you go 3/2/1 you are assured that most of the commons will be in the draft pool. Also with block cube 3/2/1 is easier to handle and according to a channel fireball article 3/2/1 is a solid ratio. If you were doing triple Innistrad than I could see 4/2/1

I would use 3 common, 2 uncommon and 1 rare/mythic for block cubes. Example, RTR, Gatecrash and DM which is well 1000 cards

    For a triple Inn, I might go 4c 2 uc 1 rare/mythic

For those of you that gave this set a bad review, your going to be disappointed.

Some of the most powerful cards of all-time will come from this set and will be Legacy, Modern, Pauper, Cube and EDH staples. This set reminds me of worldwake.
It has both power and flavor.
