This is such a good post, and it hits in the nail on the head with the "Tron problem".
I feel that the BBE ban was absolutely fantastic since I now see much less Jund while still being a quite popular deck, and I love that I have a good shot at winning against them when in a topdeck war; it's much better to have a Cryptic Command against a topdecked Olivia than a BBE.
Jund is still very powerful, but much more "fair" now.
But I've also noticed an INSANE amount of Tron, mostly in the new Blue from (which in my opinion is much better and annoying), which could be a problem. Getting Mindslavered turn after turn, while having a turn 3 Wurmcoil beat your face, AND getting your Sowing Salts/Molten rains countered is quite disgusting.
So I'm starting to think that the Seething Song ban may have been a mistake, since it keeps Tron decks in check (although we'd have to see about the blue one with counters...), even if I've always HATED storm and its 5 minute turns.
It will be interesting to see how the metagame evolves ^^
PS: I play WUR Geist of Saint Win mostly
I'm hesitant about this set, there's nothing that makes me excited like in EM or anything with a high power level IMO (except fastlands), but since there are so many new mechanics (energy, all those strange artifacts), I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. For me, the standouts so far are the 5 mana Gearhulks (on the limit of Modern playability since they make quite a huge impact, see Batterskull or Keranos), the 6 mana one that has Flash because you know, flash is awesome in Modern, Ceremonious Rejection, Dovan seems decent for Esper, some green pump cards for Infect, Bomat Courier, the Familiar which gains life and draws a card, Smuggler's copter and maybe a few more. But, I said said, I find the vehicles and strange artifacts dificcult to evaluate for now
What the hell are you saying? Like, seriously? This card is completely unplayable outside Standard and is a bin-rare card which I hope I never ever open. Wizards needs to step up their game.
Please don't dare compare it to Goyf which is THE best vanilla creature ever printed and doesn't make jump through any hoops (or have any deckbuilding restrictions, except a light G splash) just to always be a 4/5 or commonly a 5/6 for two mana. The Colossus is terrible and I doubt it will see any play outside Standard. Having a giant turd in hand which requires you to first cast some artifacts (meaning it wont come down until t4-t5) for a card that does absolutely nothing ETB and gets chumped by absolutely any token, Servos and whatever, is not worth it
lol, you can't be serious. You are implying that one of the most broken cards in Magic history, and one that is banned in all formats and restricted in Vintage, would "enable" Modern decks and be legal in Standard. A 0 mana artifact sol ring that enables t1 Jace Mind Sculptors. haha!!
I'm always surprised when people use the Delve excuse for absolutely anything: discarding cards (oh it doesnt matter the card is terrible, i'll just discard it to fuel delve xD), sacrificing permanents, playing crappy cards which you don't mind binning because it "fuels" Delve.... lol. Delve is strong precisely because you don't have to do any bad things or jump through hoops to get advantage of it, it just happens naturally when playing the game, same as Goyf. Tasi is good because you can just fetch a couple of times, cast some cantrips and thoughtseize the opponent and - oops! you just happen to have a 1 mana 4/5!.
Devastating summons is a terrible magic card and is only really good in Bushwacker due to their extreme agressiveness and "all-in" nature, and above all due to the fact that they can give their Summons haste and +1 and generate a TON of damage.
Hmmm I don't really understand your post. Your deck gets completely hosed by Chalice, yes, like almost any deck with cantrips in Modern. There's really not much you can do about it, you seem to want to change it because of this? Magic is never like this, you just have to accept that you get owned by some cards. I don't know what else to say. Chalice has always been a hoser in Modern, same as Blood moon was GG against Amulet Bloom and you couldn't do anything about it, and same as RIP destroys dredge.
It's part of the game, and it's very very bad practice you make your deck bad just to beat a random card which may or may not be played in hundreds of hours of games. Don't ever do that.
Excuse me, but this thing destroys TKS, Reality Smasher, Displacer, Reshaper, Chalice, Karn and Ugin among others. Say WHAT again??
Now, if you are past that and really want to make it as a casual deck, I would recommend not playing all 4 of them because you will never have any interaction against anyone, but instead some Transmute cards (like Muddle the Mixture) which fetch for the appropiate CMC while being decent. Also, you could try a Traverse the Ulvenwald shell to fetch for the creature part of the deck.
Cheers!
To be honest, not really. I'm not interested in reading all the article/articles at all, just was curious about his ideas. Same as if there's a film you just know you'll not see, but still are curious about some part of the plot you saw memes for, so you ask your friend.
Ok, so I'll begin testing Eldritch myself
Hi all, I'm very interested in deckbuilding ideas for this card, and Ari Lax has just made an article stating that it's broken http://www.starcitygames.com/article/33382
However, I'm not SC Premium even though I'd really like to see his ideas. So could anyone who has access briefly summarize why he things it's broken? Thanks!!
I'm currently seeing the most potential in Hooting Mandrils < Bedlam Reveler < Progenitus chains. Seems quite brutal to get a Progenitus
I agree GY hate wrecks these decks, but then I thought for a little while and I realized this is true for basically all aggro-control (and some midrange) decks in Modern. Grixis Delver? Play a RIP and destroy them, since Tasigur, Angler and Snap are so crucial for their plan. BGx? Goyfs become useless. So, in general, I think RIP is a difficult card to beat, although against other hate like Relic, it is much easier. You can quickly force them to crack it against a huge golf and achieve Delirium ASAP.
And yah, Gravediggers is good for these decks, as it doesn't do much except shut down Snaps.
I also wondered... if you fold to RIP anyways, why not play Dredge which is extremely fast and also folds to it? Well, I think the answer is clear here: that deck, as an obvious combo deck, has near zero interaction (besides conflagrate), which means that decks like Infect or Affinity WILL be faster than you, probably. With an aggro-control strategy you actually have answers and a pretty good matchup against these.
Excuse me? He's an unboltable 4/4 (certainly not a bear) which Scrys 3 and tramples over random chumpers. For 2 mana. Not Modern playable, are you insane??? :0
I personally see him in a BUG Delirium shell, a bit modified from my trusty RUG Delirium deck:
4 Grim Flayer
4 Architects of Will
3 Snapcaster Mage
1 Erayo, Sorarami Ascendant
4 Serum Visions
4 Gitaxian Probe
4 Traverse the Ulvenwald
4 Mishra's Bauble
3 Whispers of Emrakul
3 Vapor Snag
2 Abrupt Decay
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Watery Grave
2 Breeding Pool
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Hinterland Harbor
1 Island
1 Swamp
1 Forest
1 Ghost Quarter
Either way, he's gonna be a powerhouse. I'm not sure he's gonna be good in Jund, Traverse is terrible in Jund and Junk, and I don't see Grim Flayer being better, honestly.
Eldrich Progenitus
4 Hooting Mandrils
4 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
3 Bedlam Reveler
1 Huntmaster of the Fells
1 Progenitus
4 Serum Visions
4 Thought Scour
4 Gitaxian Probe
4 Eldrich Evolution
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Stubborn Denial
4 Misty Rainforest
2 Wooded Foothills
2 Steam Vents
2 Breeding Pool
1 Stomping Grounds
1 Island
1 Forest
1 Mountain
2 Hinterland Harbor
It should be pretty good to Evolution from Mandrils to Bedlam Revolver and then even from Reveler to Progenitus if the situation demands it. I don't think there almost anything that can deal with Progenitus besides Wraths (and a Lily if you only have 1 dude, yeah).
The deck looks like a pretty standard aggro-control strategy with a combo finish which can simply go over the top of most things.
Mind I haven't tested the deck yet, so it's still theorycrafting. Looking forward to EM on MODO.
I'm glad he plays almost as good as he looks as a 1-2 of. I mean, an unboltable prowess dude that ancestral recalls for RR seems pretty busted, so i'm not surprised. I'm sure it sometimes is a bit clunky, costs more, makes you discard when you don't want, etc, but still seems very very solid for RUG.
