I agree that the Colossus seems crappy. A "jump through" hoops creature which is completely vanilla, does nothing ETB, gets chumped by anything and is not even indestructible so Terminates and stuff kills it? Terrible card is terrible.

I'm hesitant about this set, there's nothing that makes me excited like in EM or anything with a high power level IMO (except fastlands), but since there are so many new mechanics (energy, all those strange artifacts), I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. For me, the standouts so far are the 5 mana Gearhulks (on the limit of Modern playability since they make quite a huge impact, see Batterskull or Keranos), the 6 mana one that has Flash because you know, flash is awesome in Modern, Ceremonious Rejection, Dovan seems decent for Esper, some green pump cards for Infect, Bomat Courier, the Familiar which gains life and draws a card, Smuggler's copter and maybe a few more. But, I said said, I find the vehicles and strange artifacts dificcult to evaluate for now Wink

Anyone trying to make a case of why this isn't good and (possibly) multi-format warping is crazy. This guy is really strong. Will see play. I don't know if he'll see play in Standard or not (personally I think he will in the vehicles deck), but definitely in older formats, and probably will be restricted in some of them. I haven't bought a box in years but the value in this set is absurd.

What the hell are you saying? Like, seriously? This card is completely unplayable outside Standard and is a bin-rare card which I hope I never ever open. Wizards needs to step up their game.

    I don't like it.

Even with the reduction cost it's a vanilla and I can't image having 5 or 6 noncreature artifacts on my board in this
creaturecentric standard that WotC forces on us.

So in other words... It's a giant, colorless Tarmogoyf in the right deck?

Please don't dare compare it to Goyf which is THE best vanilla creature ever printed and doesn't make jump through any hoops (or have any deckbuilding restrictions, except a light G splash) just to always be a 4/5 or commonly a 5/6 for two mana. The Colossus is terrible and I doubt it will see any play outside Standard. Having a giant turd in hand which requires you to first cast some artifacts (meaning it wont come down until t4-t5) for a card that does absolutely nothing ETB and gets chumped by absolutely any token, Servos and whatever, is not worth it Wink

Mana crypt is so broken. My first thought was affinity, but after thinking about it even more, it's going to enable so much potential combo in modern and probably even legacy.

lol, you can't be serious. You are implying that one of the most broken cards in Magic history, and one that is banned in all formats and restricted in Vintage, would "enable" Modern decks and be legal in Standard. A 0 mana artifact sol ring that enables t1 Jace Mind Sculptors. haha!! :p

  • posted a message on Devastating Summons
Devastating Summons seems strong with Gurmag Angler or Tasigur, the Golden Fang. Who knows, maybe even fuel for Grim Lavamancer. It doesn't even have to be big, 3-4 lands is plenty.

So far the only deck that plays it is goblins, with bushwhackers. Do they have to be played with bushwhackers?

Tokens... IF the spell gets countered, IF the tokens get bounced or killed, IF whatever... you're stuffed. Do they have it; Thoughtseize, let's find out. It's not like no other threats were presented before this point.

I'm always surprised when people use the Delve excuse for absolutely anything: discarding cards (oh it doesnt matter the card is terrible, i'll just discard it to fuel delve xD), sacrificing permanents, playing crappy cards which you don't mind binning because it "fuels" Delve.... lol. Delve is strong precisely because you don't have to do any bad things or jump through hoops to get advantage of it, it just happens naturally when playing the game, same as Goyf. Tasi is good because you can just fetch a couple of times, cast some cantrips and thoughtseize the opponent and - oops! you just happen to have a 1 mana 4/5!.

Devastating summons is a terrible magic card and is only really good in Bushwacker due to their extreme agressiveness and "all-in" nature, and above all due to the fact that they can give their Summons haste and +1 and generate a TON of damage.

  • posted a message on Chalice of the Void against a deck with a high spell count lof cmc=1
    Quote from Kingfuzius »
    Hey forum-people,

I played a UWR Thing Ascension build online, which can be seen here.

I was paired against a Jeskai Harbringer deck. Luckily for the Habringer player he/she got in all 3 rounds chalice on turn two with on 1. I had to scoop game one, because turn 3 he/she casts Blood Moon and turn 4 another Chalice on 2. Simply a hardlock. Second game I could flip thing after I protected myself with a Remand and inflict 13 damage in one turn. The player had no way of interaction with the flipped Thing so he/she scooped round 2.

Last round I never drew my srtifact hate. Now as my deck is at the moment Chalice is just the biggest hoser ever. All my carddraw is on cmc=1, but I don't want to stick to worse draw spells. I thought about throwing the last 2 Vision of beyond out for Bedlam Reveler for faster cycling and add 3 Shattering Spree to the sideboard. There is an argument to be made for taking the Remands out of the MB into the SB for 2 Shattering Spree and 1 Wear // Tear.

Do you have suggestions for this problem?

Should the answer be to make the deck game one more aggressive (and resilient with Shattering Spree) or to dodge game one and bring massive hate game 2 and 3 in.

    Greetings
    King

Hmmm I don't really understand your post. Your deck gets completely hosed by Chalice, yes, like almost any deck with cantrips in Modern. There's really not much you can do about it, you seem to want to change it because of this? Magic is never like this, you just have to accept that you get owned by some cards. I don't know what else to say. Chalice has always been a hoser in Modern, same as Blood moon was GG against Amulet Bloom and you couldn't do anything about it, and same as RIP destroys dredge.

It's part of the game, and it's very very bad practice you make your deck bad just to beat a random card which may or may not be played in hundreds of hours of games. Don't ever do that.

Everyone realizes this is more for artifacts than any relevant eldrazi right? This doesn't stop Emrakul, Ulamog, Kozilek, TKS, or anything with emerge.

Excuse me, but this thing destroys TKS, Reality Smasher, Displacer, Reshaper, Chalice, Karn and Ugin among others. Say WHAT again??

I'm my opinion, you are better off playing a budget combo deck; there are some which are actually pretty good and can beat some tier 1 strategies. What you are presenting here is jamming a bunch of absolutely terrible cards (and there's no way around it - none of these cards are remotely playable in a competitive environment) that aren't even that powerful even if you assemble the 3 or 4-card combo! Compare it to Twin, which was a 2-card combo which instantly won :p

Now, if you are past that and really want to make it as a casual deck, I would recommend not playing all 4 of them because you will never have any interaction against anyone, but instead some Transmute cards (like Muddle the Mixture) which fetch for the appropiate CMC while being decent. Also, you could try a Traverse the Ulvenwald shell to fetch for the creature part of the deck.

    Cheers!

So could anyone who has access briefly summarize why he things it's broken?

    StarCityGames.com® Premium membership rates are:

    Weekly Membership - 3.99

Not to be a jerk, but maybe pay them $4? It's a slippery slope asking people to, even in abridged form, pass along content that is paid for.

To be honest, not really. I'm not interested in reading all the article/articles at all, just was curious about his ideas. Same as if there's a film you just know you'll not see, but still are curious about some part of the plot you saw memes for, so you ask your friend.

Ok, so I'll begin testing Eldritch myself :p

    Eldritch Evolution

Hi all, I'm very interested in deckbuilding ideas for this card, and Ari Lax has just made an article stating that it's broken http://www.starcitygames.com/article/33382

However, I'm not SC Premium even though I'd really like to see his ideas. So could anyone who has access briefly summarize why he things it's broken? Thanks!!

I'm currently seeing the most potential in Hooting Mandrils < Bedlam Reveler < Progenitus chains. Seems quite brutal to get a Progenitus Grin

I've been liking it, but Spirits Tribal has not been cutting it IMO, the power level is just too low even though it can feel pretty awesome to Spelll Queller and protect it with Rattlechains. May be better in a standard WUR shell. Hmmm

Well yeah. Thats an even better standard card. This card will still see a good amount of standard play. Either way hes not good enough for modern.

Excuse me? He's an unboltable 4/4 (certainly not a bear) which Scrys 3 and tramples over random chumpers. For 2 mana. Not Modern playable, are you insane??? :0

I personally see him in a BUG Delirium shell, a bit modified from my trusty RUG Delirium deck:

Either way, he's gonna be a powerhouse. I'm not sure he's gonna be good in Jund, Traverse is terrible in Jund and Junk, and I don't see Grim Flayer being better, honestly.

I have been thinking about some of the same lines. It is essentially jumping through some hoops to play '12 goyf'. I think it will be a descent enough strategy but very vunerable vs gravyeard hate. Mostly white decks that play rest in piece. The rise of nahiri/emrakul and dredge makes sure people play gravediggers cage witch is good for Grim Flayer decks.

It is to hear some jund players have had suckes with grim flayer in modern.

I agree GY hate wrecks these decks, but then I thought for a little while and I realized this is true for basically all aggro-control (and some midrange) decks in Modern. Grixis Delver? Play a RIP and destroy them, since Tasigur, Angler and Snap are so crucial for their plan. BGx? Goyfs become useless. So, in general, I think RIP is a difficult card to beat, although against other hate like Relic, it is much easier. You can quickly force them to crack it against a huge golf and achieve Delirium ASAP.

And yah, Gravediggers is good for these decks, as it doesn't do much except shut down Snaps.

I also wondered... if you fold to RIP anyways, why not play Dredge which is extremely fast and also folds to it? Well, I think the answer is clear here: that deck, as an obvious combo deck, has near zero interaction (besides conflagrate), which means that decks like Infect or Affinity WILL be faster than you, probably. With an aggro-control strategy you actually have answers and a pretty good matchup against these.

I thought about Eldrich Evolution the other day and came up with this deck:

    Eldrich Progenitus

It should be pretty good to Evolution from Mandrils to Bedlam Revolver and then even from Reveler to Progenitus if the situation demands it. I don't think there almost anything that can deal with Progenitus besides Wraths (and a Lily if you only have 1 dude, yeah).

The deck looks like a pretty standard aggro-control strategy with a combo finish which can simply go over the top of most things.

Mind I haven't tested the deck yet, so it's still theorycrafting. Looking forward to EM on MODO.

i'm in Temur mood atm and i'm testing Bedlam Reveler a bit, having 6 spells after delving for mandrills is not easy, but i think he can make a solid 1-2 off as a late game refill, even if you do pay 1RR or 2RR it's fine if you have no hand anyway

sometimes he brings up TC memories, ofc he's alot harder to cast than TC so not really comparable, but still the card is definately viable

I'm glad he plays almost as good as he looks as a 1-2 of. I mean, an unboltable prowess dude that ancestral recalls for RR seems pretty busted, so i'm not surprised. I'm sure it sometimes is a bit clunky, costs more, makes you discard when you don't want, etc, but still seems very very solid for RUG.
