I use polluted delta and wooded foothills as fetche
s and rarely have issues getting what I want for colors in UR, they're even better going grixis. Ideally youd'd like tarn, but if you plan it's not a deal breaker.
Why wooded foothills over say bloodstain mire? Or scalding tarn when you need that island.
Hey guys, this may not be the place for this question just let me know and I'll delete it.
I am going to my lgs for modern on Wednesday night. The last time I was there it turned out to be a room full of burn, combo goblins (turn 2 empty the warrens for 5 storm count), pyrexian zoo, merfolk, and affinity.
Now my question is, how to you set up your side board to handle the weirdly consistent combo goblins and the pyrexin zoo.
I am thinking a grixis list might be in order so I could had bile blight and dark blast.
Do you have any idea what other decks will be played there?
Personally I would go with the 2nd deck, and it seems to get their life to 0 quicker. While not doing as much to you in the damage department.
Do you friends have the other command deck? I ask this because I was playing with 4 of the decks with friends and they seemed to be able to stand against each other fairly well. (Except the blue, one can definitely pilot it but you should probably give it to a green player).
The white deck actually won 2 of the 4 games we played.
If you want to add things to it I would highly recommend stoneforge mystic.
Also, what answers do you think you were lacking? Were you being targeted by everyone?
The deck comes from the idea that my group really likes the political aspect of games and forming short live alliances. Since my favorite style of play is control, I figured Gwafa would be the perfect fit for me.
The entire goal of this deck is to play out like a corrupt political system making as many friends as possible while keeping the rowdy ones quite with bribery. Then build up taxes and defenses gradually while the peasants... I mean opponents follow blindly like sheep. With your finishing blow just start getting rid of the up risers first with fat creatures or their own wincons that you steal out of their deck.
I am in the process of building this deck so please be exceptionally harsh so I don't buy a useless deck.
*note* my group has competitive decks and the two I worry about are kaalia of the vast and sharuum the hegemon
Also my budget is unlimited but I am not spending greater than $40 on a card unless it is heavily justified, just because adding 1 dual land makes my mana slightly more stable it is not justifiable to me */note*
I've loved having Batterskull in my mainboard. It's a must-answer threat in the mirror, it wrecks aggro, and it's by far my biggest threat outside of Cruel Ultimatum. I've only lost one game after resolving a Batterskull.
I am thinking about picking up 1 Batterskull for my deck as well
Also I have play tested this deck against 2 different Trons, one solid green one green red, both ended up completely winning the first game. I just found that a resolved karn is near impossible to deal with and EAT is impossible.
So I went ahead and picked up a play set of sowing salt and found every game naming Tower / another piece they do not have more than 2 of on the field is a complete win even when having to deal with Wurmcoil.
@OneShotGame would you suggest running the forbidden alchemy over the thoughtflare? I ask this because I feel like my recent games would be better if I could cast it earlier instead of at the 5 mana mark which I may not hit on turn 5.
I am thinking about going ahead and getting the 3 Inquisition of Kozilek but duress may be just as good in the heavy non creature meta here.
On a side note, I played against a burn deck and just got cleaned out by the curse that deals one damage each upkeep to me, Finally used the cryptic command to bounce the enchantment so I could counter it. But the damage was done after 14 turns and I never drew a cruel ultimatum
@loximorg: i play a 1/1 split damnation/consume the meek and i think the latter is superior to black sun's zenith. sun will not kill a goyf and as consume is an instant i recommend to play this while you save up money for damnation. smurfy is right by the way, this deck makes just not much sense without cryptic command.
@grixinators in this thread: so, no further opinions regarding suffer the past?
by the way, tomorrow i will play fnm with this (at my store bigger than the GPT) so i can post some (sober and) reliable results on sunday if anyone is interested.
So the general consensus is to get consume the meek and cryptic command takes priority
So I have been reading this thread for the past 3 or so days....
I ended up wanting to get back into magic after getting burned out over standard last year, so modern was the logical next choice after all I was the one to get weekly tournaments started at my local store. So I was looking at decks. I have always been a control player so instantly 3 decks stuck out to me, Grixis Control / RW stax (had a one point and loved it) / Merfolk
Well since I did not want to spend a lot of money Merfolk was out of the question
I wanted to start building up my collection of staples so RW stax was out
So the logical next choice was the rather cheap grixis ( I already had the snapcasters )
I ended up buying this deck (based on the first deck list)
I played against a modern ninjas which I have won every game we have played, and I am loving the deck.
I know that Damnation is a must, even after playing ninjas I feel like boardwipe is a must and that is the first "expensive" card I am picking up
Is cryptic command a must? I know it has great versitility but the 4cmc is kind of a downner especially with a 3 colored deck, or should I build up my mana base before I get this card?
Also I have to say that thoughtflare is great in this deck, I know by the time I am ready to cast it I am trying to dig for a land AND cruel.
I am attending a GPT this weekend with legacy as the format.
I would really like to play a stax deck here but I would like for it to also be semi competitive with a budget of $150
So far I have
4 Smokestacks
4 chalice of void
4 Crucible of Worlds
4 Magus of Tabernacle
4 World Queller
3 Loadstone Golem
1 Mox Opal
3 Ghostly Prison
1 Tabernacle of Pendrell vale
Now I know I am still missing quite a bit, but with the $150 budget I can spend on other cards what should I pick up.
Should I resort to armageddon stax instead of wasteland?
Ok I had ratchet bomb instead of engineered explosives for some reason, I will switch that out and try it.
Also I loved the idea of not having to worry about what is in your hand due to all of the control and synergies you have within the deck
So I bought this deck tonight and played with a birthing pod deck. He seemed to be able to out race me 2 of our the 5 games we played.
Games 1 and 2 I was still learning the ends and outs of the deck here, toying around with everything, and by the way it seems like a highly enjoyable deck to play even if it does not turn out to be tier 1 competitive.
Game 3:
He Got birthing pod out with his infinite combo before I could do much of anything,
Really felt like a Leyline of Sanctity or Witch Bane orb would have been in my hand I would have been fine (maybe side board option?)
Game 4:
I played out the deck as envisioned, I taxed him to the point to where my opponent could not do much of anything, then I got out the lodestone golem followed by chalice for 4, I proceeded to beat face in.
Game 5:
His game plan switched up a bit when he drew no birthing pod, he flooded the field with creatures in which I lost too after destroying my ghostly prison. Feel like a wrath effect would have been awesome here (side board option here as well?)
Over all think it is a really fun deck to play just needs some adjustments with meta
No player gets priority during the untap phase so no, but certain cards can stop others from untapping during an untap phase.
Also if you want to activate an ability before your untap phase I would activate it (if it legal activation) at the end of opponents turn
so i dropped the thought scours and pikes. theyre definitely better in UW flash (prosak!) i like a third hellkite in the main with slayers stronghold. great finisher after youve gotten in a geist hit or two. current list is:
in my meta game there is literally only 1 zombie player so i have pillars in the side instead of the main. izzet charm is so good. good for countering planeswalkers. kills huntmaster. play it. ive also been considering running tamiyo main over jace. still got lots of testing to do.
Your deck looks nearly identical to mine,
However I have 2 tamiyos in the main board over Jace (He really does not do much for me except kill other Jaces)
I have 2 Disipate over the Tamiyo (Debating on 1 in sideboard so 3 post board)
Debating on Archwing in the sideboard, it is such a power house against control.
And taking this to GP - Charleston this weekend hopefully it will put me in day 2
Why wooded foothills over say bloodstain mire? Or scalding tarn when you need that island.
I think this is where the polluted deltas shine, this way you can get the island or swamp based on your need for the moment.
And the only dual color as far as mana cost goes is splinter twin so no worries there for casting that under blood moon.
My current list is
7x Island
5x Mountain
4x Scalding Tarn
4x Steam Vents
1x Desolate Lighthouse
1x Ghost Quarter
1x Tectonic Edge
4x Pestermite
3x Deceiver Exarch

4x Serum Visions
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Peek
3x Electrolyze
2x Cryptic Command
3x Mana Leak
2x Dispel
2x Izzet Charm
This current deck is kind of all over the place so that is why I am posting it here to hopefully get some advice on the meta that my LGS has.
Personally I would go with the 2nd deck, and it seems to get their life to 0 quicker. While not doing as much to you in the damage department.
On a side note, what is good against these decks? Specifically, Eidolon of the Great Revel.
The white deck actually won 2 of the 4 games we played.
If you want to add things to it I would highly recommend stoneforge mystic.
Also, what answers do you think you were lacking? Were you being targeted by everyone?
