Hello All, I just started cubing a few months back. My playgroup was getting sick of Constructed and it’s cost and made the decision to quit playing Magic. So, I never had the intent to quit and wanted a way to use up my cards (been playing since 4th Edition to Torment and Time Spiral to Present). I did not actually know about what the Cube was until I kept hearing Evan Erwin of the “the Magic Show” talk about it in his Set Reviews. I looked it up and realize this was the perfect way to get my playgroup to keep playing and not have to sell my cards because I could not find another playgroup. I will hopefully have Archetype analysis up within the few days to why I made certain card selection.

Yea true, but WOTC has since printed many potential answers. I would love to see how they play out. The one that comes to mind is Notion Thief. Yes, it clearly was printed for Sphinx's Revelation and a stolen one is back breaking, but playing Legacy, even on the draw (Up four mana to Jace's 5 {who would cast a Jace without Dispel mana up}), it is equally backbreaking especially after they Brainstorm upon casting not fearing a threat on the board. You really F'ed up the control's tempo, hand attack for 2 cards, time walk for 2 turns, and have a 3/1 live for kicking Jace down to 1 loyalty. I have made that play several times now in Legacy play and I would love to see it in Standard for the next year. I believe you can play a Blue deck viably without JTMS if he were to get reprinted.
Though highly unlikely, there are some interesting thoughts to possibly it happening. Put on your aluminum hats for this one:
1: Starcitygames recent Buylist increase of JTMS. We all know they have to have some sort of insider information regarding WOTC dealings, whether directly or indirectly. Would a Standard legal JTMS create such buzz and speculation bubble of sort for a card that is only legal in the Vintage and Legacy.
2: I recall there was a April Fool's joke, maybe from WOTC that was release saying JTMS will be in M14. HAHAHA april fools. but was it??? What if it was a long con and the April Fool's joke was really that it was not a joke???
But in all seriousness, I see JTMS, maybe at best reprinted, in FTV:20th anniversary. For the Blue Planeswalker, Why hasn't anyone suggested that Tamiyo would get reprinted. She rotating in October but I can see her??? getting reprinted. If Gideon could go Core set with his weird Planewalker to Creature ability and Sorin's Mindslaver ability going into a core set, I think her emblem ability is not confusing for newer players (Liliana 3.0 had an emblem ability too). Plus, Didn't Sorin and Gideon enter core when Zendikar was going just rotate out. WOTC has set precedent in that certain planeswalkers can enter the core set for a one year basis in order to reset the base walker (Jace being a version 4 means it will have to be another year or two before he gets another card)
Your green players will be a lot happier with the following (pardon the lack of linking, it's awful on mobile):
Eternal witness
Sylvan library
Sakura tribe elder
Fyndhorn elves
Call of the herd
Lotus cobra
Krosan tusker
Phantom centaur
Chameleon colossus
Ohran viper
All of these are great. After going through the card comparisons and cube list, I came up with the adding the first 5 on your list. Lotus Cobra, I like this card much less then many other people because I do not want/unable to include Fetchlands. Krosan Tusker, I have chosen to exclude cycling triggers from my cube. The Big Green Beaters are doing well in my group so Phantom Centaur and Chameleon Colossus probably will not get added. Lastly, I really want to limit Green's Card drawing and Ohran Viper is too damn good in a limited format.
If you are into awful elf stuff or people feel like their dorks are getting hosed maybe try caller of the claw?
Elf Tribal was originally in my design when my Cube was 500 cards. But since my playgroup will normally get at most 6 people, and avg 3.5 people per week, I had to cut 100 cards (20 per color). For green, trimming the fat equal a lot of the bad elf cards.
I'd go with the instant speed deathtouch snake and arashi the sky asunder over recluse any day.
After listening to the first couple of responses and analyzing some peoples picks during testing, the deathtouch element was eliminated. Since every color has some kind of decent removal options, I wanted to include some green options. I thought deathtouch mechanic would be the answer, but it really did not work.
Tell us what's in the other sections too or the common struggles of the green player! Metagame choices might help!
I do not want to include a complete list until my testing is over. For example, after listening to people, I have already flipped 17 cards in the Green Section. The real issue is Green is not really getting drafted. Most of the cards get drafted in the end of the packs and hardly used. When someone tries to build a dedicated green deck, the cards I had just don't make a good deck. Like I said, I have flipped 17 cards already and will get some more testing done this weekend.
On a Side, whoever suggested that I look over the cube comparisons and cube list, Thank you. It really helped and now I am thinking and designing the cube much differently. Instead of putting together a bunch of cards, I designing with a concerted effort to Potential archetypes that are popular in our Meta. Below are the ideas for Archetypes for each color I am now designing around.
Black: Suicide Black, WB Recursion, Monoblack Control
Red: Red Deck Wins (by far the most drafted deck, in 6 testing sessions, every time this archetype was drafted, each time by different people.), Gargadon Red (may no longer be viable since I have dropped a lot of the Ball Lightning Creatures), and Gruul Aggro.
Green: No real strong archetypes at the moment since I killed off Elf Tribal. only Gruul Aggro is somewhat playable. Going the add Genesis Wave and Tooth and Nail for potential deck.
Along with the standard cube staples of multiple color control.
If you can fix your mana, nothing beats Spectral Procession. 3 Tokens for 3 mana.
Also, define Junk for you, does that mean 4/5 color, if so, I have an FNM deck that I used that ran Chandra, the Firebrand and double up Lingering Souls twice. But the deck was not competitive against other well-designed decks (ala Soul Sisters or Eggs)
This. Aiming at 50/50 (or 60/40 for green) won't bring any balance. It will only make you run terrible spells in colors where creatures are great, and terrible creatures in colors where you want to play a huge amount of spells. For example, my green consists of 80% creatures, red and white 60%, and my blue only 35%. Only my black is "balanced" 50/50. Due to what Green wants to do, it is usually better to play creature-spells over spells.
That is true. I designed this cube within the last month and I started out trying to keep the power of each color balanced, which I felt should have this 50/50 split for all colors. But after testing it a couple of times, different things started arising. I started to change Green and Blue for fit more how they would like to play. At this moment, Green has the 60/40 Split Creature/Spell and Blue with its 40/60 split. Hence that is why I started this thread, even with the initial change, Green still was getting under drafted. I will be doing your suggestion and increasing my creature base because it should get green drafted better.
What my playgroup does when only 3 people want to or can draft my cube (400 cards) is this: we each make 4 boosters of 15 random cards. You draft 3 boosters. Then you get all the cards of the 4th booster. Therefore you end up with 60 cards for a seal deck feel, but you still drafted. The 4th booster sort of mimics the idea that when you do a 8 person draft, there are just cards that you do not get to ever see because they are drafted prior to the pack getting to you. Then we just run a 3 round tourney, each round, one person is on bye. Lastly, we also have an free-for-all Multiplayer. It can eat up a lot of time and has been fun.
I run a peasant cube, so all of my suggestions will be relatively cheap.
A 4th or 5th Edition Sylvan Library is 12$, and can push green a long ways. Card filter/draw is a strong effect for green. Skinshifter is less than 1$.
Arbor Elf and Experiment One are good aggro one drops. Don't forget that a 3drop on t2 is just as good (if not better) than a 2-power one drop turn one. Eternal Witness is less than 5$. Yavimaya Elder is sub 1$.
Acidic Slime is an awesome card to ramp into, and it is often a 2-1.
These and the above mentioned could be a good start for any green section (I highly recommend getting a Birds of Paradise before its standard legal, although they print one with awesome art in Modern Masters)
This is a great set of cards for me to consider. Arbor Elf was already in, and Eternal Witness and Yavimaya Elder are mark to replace the elves I mention earlier. Acidic Slime is also already in too.
As for the Sylvan Library, I cannot believe I did not think of that.
I could really use the suggestions for upgrading the Non-Creature spells.
Viridian Shaman .25 (you support an elf subtheme, why are you playing Oktabi
...
Also tribal is very hard to get to work. If you grab an Elvish Champion or a Priest of Titania you need your deck to be almost mono green for those cards to have value. I would start dropping the Elf matters cards.
It initially started green on that build when I first built the cube. I started with each color with 50 Creatures and 50 Spell with more then enough elves for a tribal build and started cutting cards to get to 50 total for Green. All the Elves started to fall off and Priest, Elvish champions are some of the leftovers. These two are earmark for replacement.
