In general prison decks only work when you can predict the meta and adjust accordingly to shut down your opponents plans. In legacy the only successful prison deck is Death N Taxes, which is successful in large part because it is a blue dominated format and Death N Taxes is designed to stomp blue. In Vintage it's a similar story where the hatebear decks and workshops decks have a good idea of what to expect in these environments and know how to hate them.
Death & Taxes is not a prison deck. It'd be reasonable to call it a creature-based control deck, but I don't see how it can be considered prison.
The only successful prison deck I can think of in Legacy is Lands, and it's only "successful" in that it actually has the rare finish rather than the absolutely nothing that the other prison decks have (e.g. Enchantress, which hasn't had anything for like 2 years).
I'd argue that it's a prison deck, it's certainly more effective at taxing mana than lands is
Legacy death and taxes or modern? Because it's the difference between being wrong and really wrong. Death and taxes tries to use taxes to out tempo the opponent, a prison decks goal is to completely lock them out of the game.
Yeah, legacy D&T sometimes negates entirely manabase, but thats are some match, a lot of times is mother+stoneforge for the win, without even touching opponents mana, at his core, D&T IS tempo.
On the Other hand, Legacy has 2 good decks that can prison the opponent: aggro loam (with life from the loam+wasteland+raven´s crime engine) and blood moon decks (mainly painters), and both are meta decks. The traditional non-meta dependant deck Stax is dead (i finally bought smokestax playset since they are cheaper)
Conspiracy makes angel able to bounce itself to go infinite with suture for life and damage, that's why. I have a dismember side, it was in conspiracys slot. The idea is DnT with an infinite combo back up. Messenger is really really good here but that's another story. I wanna focus on the core idea of going infinite while retaining the game plan.
make a lot of sense!!
so, this is more like a Combo deck, instead of the normal tempo approach, so forget all i say haha
This might be lack of sleep talking, but I really think I've done it. Death and taxes with a combo back up. No sacrificing of the game plan. Took out my two forgetenders side for a dismember and an additional copy of conspiracy weakening my RDW matchup, but sutures main will more than make up for that. Giving up tidehollow will be the hardest part, but I feel it's worth it for the combo. Conspiracy is not an entirely dead card either if I don't have it, since it will enable me to cast everything with cavern of souls uncounterable. Seems solid since the combo involves doing things we want to do anyway with restos and suture. Thoughts?
random thoughts (without any playtesting in WB, but a lot in mono W, so take this with a grain of salt!):
-to me the mono W version has solid 2 cc and 3 cc, so the only plus I see in splash is having a strong 1 cc other than vial, green have mana dude, to me black version really needs a t1 black discard (dirupting mana thing/curve creatures in hand is very good in this deck!)
-conspiracy seems really bad IMHO, why not put another cavern instead?
-once time i played a 2 path/2 dismember main in my mono W (a lot of times i want to play t1 removal, but dont want to give the extra land, pod for example), im sure i will play at least 2 dismember main if i lay the splash B version (maybe a 2 dismember/3 path MD, with another dismbember and/or path in SB)
-messenger has a very strange CC, really dont like BBB in this deck.
-how his sature priest? i dont see him in the Mono W version, i always have better 2 cc to do (leonin, thalia, revoker)
-really need to see SB to make others (bads/randoms) comments
really dont know until i find myself in that position but i think...
tell the value, maybe he be so gratefull that give you for a big deal (500), i was rippof a lot of times when i was a newbie, and still feel a grudge against that people, on the other hand, one guy once tell me "hey, i should you give you more for that", and until this day (that was more than 10 years ago) that guys is a really close friend.
green: tarmo
black: Dark confidant, liliana
red: lighting bolt
white: path to exile
blue: snapcaster mage, remand
so yeah, grab a remands now that they are a bit cheaper thanks to the new Dual Deck, maybe they get reprinted in the hypothetical Modern Master 2, but better play safe.
congrats on your win! (i only watch the t8 live and was amazing)
sorry, im such a newbie in this deck, and have a couple of questions:
Why:
- 3x repeal, and not 4x?
- talisman, instead of signet or just basic island?
- oboro vs basic island (blood moon vs choke?) is really an important deck choice?
- 4th copy: treasure mage vs solemn simulacrum in the 75, why the SS instead of TM?
- SB: why bottle gnomes instead of spellskite?
- SB: why 2 Snapcaster Mage? why not Main?
- SB: i have tried negate and hibernation (POD mainly, but good against WG hatebear and Zoo), and both feels awesome, why not running them?
i think of myself as a pretty bad player (but not so bad in the deck building phase) so a few light on that deck choice will really help me.
