Alrighty, here's my go at a short tournament report from FNM last night.
Round 1
Against Dredge. Game went awful, flooded very early, even after furious shuffling.
- 1 Goblin Guides
- 2 Dismember
+ 1 Pillar of Flame
+ 2 Relic
Same result as the first game.
0-1
Round 2
Against Merfolk. Curved out nicely
with a first turn Experiment One. Got there in the end with bloodrushed Rampager.
-2 Pillar
-1 Dismember
+3 Vines
He gets Vial on turn one and starts dropping lord after lord. Realized that I shouldn't have brought out one of the Dismembers. Cursecatcher was annoying if you are stuck on a land or two.
-1 Goblin Guide
+1 Dismember
I brought back in the dismember to deal with those pesky lords. I kept a fast hand which included 2 Vines. I didn't draw any Vines during game two so he didn't know about them yet and that paid off in the end. Steady beat down throughout the game. Dismember was invaluable at getting rid of their lords. Final swing I was able to Vines his Image which he had copying one of his Lords, Rampager my Goyf and when he went to Vapor Snag it I responded with my other Vines. He has nothing.
1-1
Round 3
Against American Tempo/Geist of Saint Win. Keep a decent starting hand, I can remember that there were two Guides in it. Get in a good amount of damage as he's establishing his lands. Steady spot removal coming from him most of the game. He was able to abuse the separate Goblin Guide triggers with his fetch lands (by fetching after each reveal if he didn't want it). Game goes long, I get worried as I draw 3 lands in a row while he's at 2. I top deck a bolt for the win.
-2 Pillar
-2 Bolts
-2 Burning Tree
+3 Vines
+2 Blood Moon
+1 Ancient Grudge (I saw a Batterskull off a reveal trigger in game one)
I draw an opening hand of all one drops and a Vines, I decide to keep it on a risk because I figured I would be able to evolve Experiment One nicely. Second turn draw a Blood Moon, it was hard to keep a poker face as he has been fetching very greedily thus far. Turn three, play the Blood Moon, he has no basics in any other colors. He bolts off the last of my pressure. I play draw go with him for two turns as I don't have much of a hand. Draw a Rampager and play it. He draws a basic Plains, passes. I attack, he tries to Path, I protect with a Vines. He has nothing for the rest of the game.
2-1
Round 4
Against what I'm calling Mono Black control. I only saw a Duress and two Doom Blades, wasn't much if a match.
3-1
Overall I felt that the night went well. I am still mystified as to how I kept drawing a lot of lands in my multiple matchups as I am playing quite a stock list with only 19 lands. Vines was an MVP against all the spot removal that other decks had.
