For an extra 2 it does a bit more work than Deadly Brew.

so much more work. 'to hand' versus 'to the battlefield' is massive. goes from bad/niche to super strong. just the 'each player sacs a creature' is usually a 3 mana effect, coming with the body you sac.

Very funny if your opponents spam spells to make you bleed yourself to death.

I think that might be exactly why they limit it to 'second spell'. One good turn with Animar and I just passively have one fewer opponent, lol

bojuka bog? One of these topper is worth much less than the others...

worth much less than MOST of the others. Rings of Brighthearth is barely above bulk since the reprint. The cheapest foil version of Bog is similar value to the Lorwyn block foil of Rings. I bet the nonfoil Bog ends up being worth more than either nonfoil Rings, and the foil is going to be a respectable pull.

Bog by itself is not a hit obviously, but there's a lot to be said for desirable versions of even the cheapest heavily used staples Smile

the bad guys are feeling so underpowered and it makes me sad. The Witch King, the Nazgul, the Balrog, Saruman, now Grond. I was hoping for some stuff balanced by casting costs, but they make you feel existential dread when they hit the field across from you. The Nazgul could have used day/night, day is what we got, night is something a lot better. idk, there's so much good flavor in this set, but almost none of the bad guys feel like something any of the Fellowship run and hide from, which seems like as much of a flavor fail as 'the Ring tempts you' being all upside.

Interesting. I was thinking the four color legend would be Saruman -- ever color but Green.

I feel like that's still entirely possible, or did Maro specify only one?

    theothin asked:

During the early 00s, there were six card types in conventional Magic: land, creature, instant, sorcery, artifact, and enchantment. With planeswalkers absent from LTR, battles still waiting to see how they do in MOM, and tribal retired, should we assume the six early-00s card types are the only card types in LTR?

We didn’t make a new one if that’s what you’re asking. No planeswalkers, no battles.

Ok, this confirms it now for sure, there will be a legendary instant or sorcery.

Maro has always been tricky with his his answers. He says

    1) no planeswalkers

    2) no battles)

    3) no new types

he very specifically does not rule out Tribal, and I think he has said it's not impossible to see it in a Horizons set in particular, and this goes right into Modern. he has talked a few times about the difficulty of legendary instants and sorceries. I could see a legendary Tribal card. something tied to ents or such.

I'm not saying it's super likely, just that it's no less likely than the other two, and his wording seems to be very careful

Seems pretty unlikely to me. Tribal is a cardtype but it only goes alongside other cardtypes, and with 'five different cardtypes' feels more like we should expect legendaries that aren't just multitype- like if the only legendary artifacts and enchantments were also creatures that would be weird. Plus, tribal seems more unlikely to show up than legendary spells. The whole problem with tribal WotC has said is that it's weird if it only shows up a little bit whereas legendary instants and sorceries could easily show up as a couple odd cards in a set. And how heavy will the tribal support be here, even outside of the tribal type?
    I doubt it.

It's entirely possible that it's instants/sorceries, that phrasing just makes it feel like a trick, the person asking him was wrong, tribal was used on one card in MH2, it's not retired in the same way banding is. I feel like they didn't like how legendary sorceries played in the past. My biggest thing is just how well each one fits. if I'm a designer and you tell me I'm allowed to use tribal in this set, I can come up with 20 cards very easily, all super thematic to Tolkien's creations. If you tell me I have to have one legendary instant or sorcery and make it flavorfully worth making legendary, i struggle. the breaking of the bridge in Moria? breaking Saruman's staff? that's a big thing about those books, there's a very limited number of times where overt magic like what this game shows as instants or sorceries pops up, most of the 'magic' was much more subtle than that.

The difference betweem Specter and Wraith is like the difference between Knight and Soldier -- Specters are mounted.

Wraith isn't even worth to be a creature type. There's exactly six wraiths of 25.000+ cards in all 30 years of Magic History.
    https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=type:wraith (game:paper)
If your distinction is true they all can be errated as Spirits as well.
I really hope the "Wraith Noble" aren't really the Nazguls (which are mounted) or that would be infuriating.

I think it would be fine to batch a few things, but I am not man about the RingWRAITHS being wraiths for the same basic reason I'm fine with Frodo not being a human or Kithkin or something. They should be btched, but if it's in the name or key to what it is, it should get the appropriate type.

    Huh?
    What?
They didn't even have to read the book - they could have watched the movie. Eowyn was a loner - she set to prove her worth as a warrior of her own virtue and not as an adopted princess. Her card draw with 6 humans is forgivable - she loved her people and humankind in general - but the summon knights makes nearly no sense. Furthermore - the riders of rohan more resembled warriors than knights - they operated as scouts, ambush parties and calvary - but they answered only to their king and did not have a code of chivalry, heavy armor or any other trappings we associate with knights.

And that picture? What is she doing - randomly running in the air with the most awkward of poses? Also, I get inclusiveness - but she is the white lady of Rohan - known for her pale complexion!

She killed a witch king! Like killed it - not just caused it to have to be reformed. Aragorn didn't do that. Doubt even Gandalf could do it. How about if eowyn deals damage to a creature with indestructible, exile it.

I'm reading it as a collective Ride of the Rohirrim card, trample and haste sounds about right for a cavalry charge. Remember this is just the Commander deck version, made to fit the bigger theme of the deck. I have not been super impressed with those yet, but I bet the main set version is something you could read just the card text and say it's her.

this is a terrible idea. We lost so many LGS's over the pandemic, and this would kill a good chunk of the ones we have left long before it hurt WOTC. As long as they have Amazon and SCG, even if it hurts them in the long run, that would only be after it sinks in that we have nowhere to play, and a lot of people would move to Arena. Not buying Secret Lairs is the only thing that immediately stings them, especially now that they are printing some amount in advance.

    Yep, no Lorwyn, as expected.
Well there's no need for it since Eldraine is just Lorwyn but better. /s

Eldraine is basic AF. Nothing that plane offers is something new. Boring plane with mainstream overdone crap.
    lorwyn OTOH, exotic, majestic, original.
    A work of art.

/s at the end means sarcasm, just fyi Smile

a fan of the Halo Foil (of course have not seen it, but I find it ugly based on the images in the web). So now I’ll pass. For some reason I feel very happy about that. Smile

I'm not saying to buy it, I'm not wild about the Secret Lair model in general, but you should go to your LGS and look at a Halo foil in person. I don't love them in videos, but find them really pretty in person. I think I'll grab a few of the Walking Ballista one because I saw one of the Kaladesh border halo foils at prerelease and it was stunning
