Just taking modern into account, phoenix was a very powerful deck at the pro tour. Im surprised about how the deck performs even with a red dot on their head. Not in a bad way. It's a very powerful fair deck
why all the people seem to hate combo decks when the problem with modern at the moment is not spell based combo decks like storm or ad nauseam? to be honest, the only time when modern had problems with this kind of decks was on the very first modern pro tour. Since then, all the good "combo" decks in the format had creatures as central part of their strategy. I dont see why we cant have some goodies in modern horizons. Of course, i want better fair cards (GDS is my current deck of choice), but im a storm player too
you cannot go full fair in eternal/non-rotating formats and win a lot. It doesnt work. Look at legacy, you have miracles, but it has terminus (1 mana wrath), counterbalance, and monastery mentor for a fast kill. You need something "broken" in your deck to succeed. That's why in modern, all the good fair decks in the history of the format had some kind of nut draw. Double fenix on turn 2, twin combo, turn 3 bloodbraid into lili or seize into goyf into lili and so on. I dont see this kind of things as problem, when you take into account that other strategies has 7 mana planeswalkers on turn 3, or 12 power on turn 2, etc. As the card pool gets bigger, you just need more powerful strategies to win
i think that control decks in modern have all the tools to dismantle linear strategies, but the problem are that:
1. There are a lot of strategies that need specific answers ASAP (and the sideboard has just 15 slots)
2. The time to find those answers is really short before its too late
so, i think that the problem of control decks in modern is the lack of good card selection. The problem with this is that every good cantrip you print in modern is used not just in control, but in unfair decks too, so you should print things like fow, hymn and flusterstorm. They are very powerfull cards, but whatever
im more worried about the potential bannings with this new rule. I mean, of course bazaar of baghdad will be restricted, but i dont care about vintage. Modern on the other hand... it will be a mess i supose
while i think that this is a very cool article to read, it seems that there are some contradictions in it, and some paragraph are... strange. I dont like any unbans, but we'll see
i think that pros prefer std not because of skill, but because of fewer decks viable in the format
If you know that you gonna play against 3 decks, maybe you can get an edge because of testig and new side technology
In modern, you can tune your deck to beat mardu, jeskai, tron, humans and storm, and in the first 2 rounds you are paired against monored and you go home empty
The top 8 of this gp looks awesome, or at least not bad. I find interesting that faithless loothing found a new shell. The card seems very powerful

goblin ringleader
goblin matron
wasteland
rishadan port
flusterstorm
force of will
sword to plowshares
karakas
baleful strix
any of them would be awesome
