Who am I? CommanderOfTrest, a builder..a lover of the weird and unloved creatures of Magic. The Simic guild sometimes requires a bit of Exploration...so, that sent me on a Journey of Discovery. It took so long, I felt like an Old Man of the Sea. But then...there it was, the ONLY legendary octopus ever printed. Lorthos, the Tidemaker is the lord of the High Tide. Those reading may now start to shake their heads, but with the deck only being about a month old...it came in 2nd twice in two different local EDH/Commander tourneys. It looks like a deck not really put together..but look closer, and you will learn to fear the deep blue sea.
Why Lorthos, the Tidemaker?
He's a mutha f***ing octopus.
Why aren't you playing Azami, Lady of Scrolls?
Don't worry folks, Azami, Lady of Scrolls is in the deck. But she's got tons of builds around her, and this massive octopus legend doesn't.
Why play this deck?
-If you enjoy tapping down opponents permanents
-If you like combo decks
-If you enjoy removing hope
-If 8 is your favorite number
Why you shouldn't play this deck?
-If you don't like big blue
-If you get sea sick
Rule the waves...(Yes, Lorthos costs 8)
There is no way I would play a commander that costs that much without a way to get it out. For this, I have Snow-Covered Islands+Extraplanar Lens to ensure other U players don't get the acceleration. Caged Sun and Gauntlet of Power, or a well-timed High Tide will help get you there. But then there is the riskier Dream Halls for those who enjoy throwing caution to the wind.
Water is patient, remember this...(Strategy for Victory)
There are two distinct strategies for winning...
1)Lorthos Lockout!
Ramp out Lorthos early, lock down opponents one at a time. Pick out the player who has had the better start. Locking that opponent down and swinging for overkill means you can easily dispatch the next opponent as you build up your superiority. Frost Titan and Tamiyo, the Moon Sage also helps out here. Brine Elemental+Vesuvan Shapeshifter ensures that what is locked will stay locked. Remember, Lorthos's ability triggers when he swings..but does not target a player. This means you can swing at an already locked opponent and tap out your next victim.
