First off, this game is black hole. It looks like I'm not quiting anytime soon. While I'm still pretty sad with the state of Modern, my main reason for stepping back was a lack of a decent playgroup. My MTG friends really weren't into it, until last week. A good friend of mine is a pro-tour hopeful, and has decided it's time to learn modern, so looks like I'll stick around for awhile. Anyway, my current deck:

Discussion: what do you think about BW tokens place in current meta?
It looks better then ever, top40 at pro tour (Juza 36th, 6 BW Tokens decks in day2, ), 38th place at GP Vancouver and Top8 at SCG Baltimore (over 700 players).
Tokens - playable at competitive level or better stay at FNM with this deck? Does it have chances to won bigger tournament?
The deck has been performing very well, and I do think tokens is viable competitively. The issue comes from the deck's fairness. We are not a unique/difficult to fight strategy (like infect or living end), we don't draw, we don't combo, we don't over abuse card synergy (Tron, Unburial Gifts). We are cheap though. If you roll without Bitterblossom or Liliana, you can build the deck for under $500. Thoughtseize, Sorin, and fetch lands are in standard and easy to get traded. Everything else is in the event deck. For an enthusiast like me, the deck is GREAT. From the view point of a very competitive player with a $1000+ dollar budget, why not just run twin, with more draw effects, an instant win combo, and a bolt+snap+bolt backup plan?

TL:DR - Tokens can beat anything out there, but not as consistently as the tier one crowd. If you like the playstyle, and don't want a $1000+ deck, it's a great option.

Side note: If we got something silly, like 1W "draw a card, get a 1/1 flying spirit", or a white BB that doesn't hurt you, this deck might push to tier one.

I've read in an article somewhere, that BW tokens is a very fair deck and in order to get it over the top, it has to have an unfair sideboard.
That being said, what do you think of my sideboard list?

Eidolon of Rhetoric is for UR storm and Living End
Angel's Grace is for every combo deck
Rest In Peace is for UR storm and Living end
Stony Silence is for affinity and tron
Murderous Cut is for additional creature removal.
I'm pretty sure I said that in the primer "Run the hattiest hate possible", lol. Anyway, my side, and explanations
Rest in Peace Storm, Living End (which I think could see more play)
    Stony Silence Affinity, Tron
Aven Mindcensor Amulet Bloom, Scapeshift (I like this one, because it's very rarely used)
Torpor Orb Twin, random jank like Elves and Soul Sisters
Disenchant Affinity, Boggles (I chose this over sundering growth because of blood moon)
    Leyline of Sanctity Burn

Keep in mind that sideboards are also mildly tempered by the main. I main 6 discard, and 8 removal, so I don't have thoughtseize effects in my sideboard.

I think angels grace is a cute trick. It's at least worth a shot, although I think you'd be better off with Runed Halo naming valakut, splinter twin, lightning bolt, grapeshot, etc. The split second trick is definitely something Runed Halo lacks.

I think Liliana of the Veil may edge her way in over the Torpor Orb. I currently have little to no game against boggles, and control shells have had good results recently, too. Liliana really shines in the control match.

Hey guys, is anyone interested in taking over the primer? I've been dissatisfied with the state of modern for awhile, and I would like to drop out now, rather than go through the whole process of relearning a new meta.

As for the primer, it's in very good condition. Considering how little we grew in the TC days, the primer is pretty darn extensive. If you regularly follow the board, play the deck competitively, and have a good grasp of all the deck/card tagging tools, shoot me a PM.

That's about Pro Tour Born of the Gods. Wescoe posted this article later, stating "At Pro Tour Born of the Gods I played a Black/White tokens deck that was warped more than it should have been to stand a chance against aggressive Zoo decks." He goes on to post a list with Windbrisk Heights.

I was referring to an an article a month after in which Wescoe talks about playing BW Midrange. There was alot of chatter on the forum, "is this a new direction for tokens", etc. It's definitely a different deck.

This article isn't even about Modern...

Anyway, I'm not saying Windbrisk is an auto include, but it is definitely recommended.

BUT Wescoe wasn't running BW Tokens, he was running Deadguy Ale (pure midrange with Pack Rat and Blade Splicer). I don't think his list even had spectral procession. Definitely not cracking a heights, lol.

IF you could swap the Hero for Elspeth or Sorin, what's the appeal to you for Hero over a planeswalker? I know that hero provides a clock, but you have so many creatures in your deck doesn't that just make your opponents spot removal a lot stronger? I also have a question about the mana base, you run only 2 vaults as your only utility lands, how do you find that over the other 2 that are seeing play in lists, ghost quarter and windbrisk height?
Anyone who has not played with Windbrisk Heights should give it a shot. Cracking a turn 4 Windbrisk to bring in a cheap walker/token spell or instant speed anthem really does happen, and it wins games. It's pseudo draw, and its only cost is forcing a land to come into play tapped. Now that we should be playing against more control/midrange, we should be able to afford the penalty. Check out the most recent articles in the primer. Craig Wescoe and Melissa DeTora both recommend it. Ghost Quarter is a meta call. As I recommended earlier, if you run it, treat it like a destruction spell (so it'll push your land count up to 24/25) and side it out if unnecessary.

Kovo summed up the PW/Hero conversation. I will amend that Elspeth Tirel is an army in a can, and her other abilities will crush your opponent if you already have tokens in play. She can recover a bad board state. If Jund makes a come back, she's pretty darn good in that match.

What do you people think about 2-3 Liliana of the Veil in our SB against Combo, Tron, Boggle etc? Want to use 2 Duress + 2 or 3 Lilies as overall package against combo or control.
I would think a more heavy discard package would work better. Since we already have a good base.
Liliana is amazing against Control. She's solid against Boggles (if you can get to her), but you're probably better off with extra discard for combo. In general, you can setup your deck to be heavy on creature removal in the main, and have extra hand disruption in the side, or vice versa.

Otherwise, just looking for general comments about the deck, I'm debating moving some things around so I have room for more removal. Also I have no idea where to start in terms of a sideboard. I realize sideboards are always going to be based on the meta but does anyone have some recommendations for general cards that they would always include in a tokens sideboard?

I'd only play 3 Champion main. The other thing I'd do is change your lands around. I run 4 windswept even without playing green, so I'd consider cutting a couple isolated chapels and a godless shrine to up the number of heaths. As far as what to replace the auriok with, Murderous Cut or a Sword would be my first thought. The main reason to cut an Auriok is that it tends to be bad in multiples and also a dead card vs a variety decks that don't care about your life total.

As far as siding goes, I'd just look through the guide. I've noticed that people rarely seem to have the same sideboards, though Leyline of Sanctity is really common these days. If you have them, it's pretty versatile. Another couple things it's common to see are either Rest in Peace or Relic of Progenitus. Right now I've got Extirpate and Ghost Quarter in mine, but I don't think it's that common. If red decks are popular you might see Kor Firewalker. Really lots of options. Suppression Field, Aven Mindcensor, etc. I'd make a list of what you think the most common decks in your area are, order it by which ones are best against you, and then find what hates on them.

Auriok bad in multiples? Ever resolved a spectral procession with 3 aurioks on board? Its glorious.
I disagree. Auriok is a horrible top deck, and gaining life != winning. Gaining a bit of life can allow you to set up the win, and having anti-red in the main is a solid call. I think 3x is sufficient.

I want to point out a few MUs where I struggle :

UB Tezzeret and The Rack first:
I don't understand why Stony Silence is still a staple in SBs while it doesn't deal with Ensnaring Bridge, and actually many other cards I'm going to talk about in the following lines.
My reasoning has been "ok it shuts down Affinity but doesn't stop an already equipped Plating, or Ensoul Artifact or Champion to race us", also "Tron will get his lands with Sylvan Scrying and Stirrings anyway and Pyroclasm our team once, it actually only stops O-Stone for the best". Of course it shuts down Spellskite and now banned Pod. Oh and it shuts down our own Swords if we get to play some...
A sure weakness I see in the archetype is we have hardly anything to deal with non-creature permanents. Hide // Seek is definitely a very sexy card for a red splash !
One card I see myself play over Stony Silence is Sundering Growth, as a strictly better option. Am I right to think so ? I see its other uses against Batterskull, Bogles, the mirror, Twin, Bloom Titan, Storm...

    Another MU, Tron:
Ok Ugin wipes the board for -O, concede. Wurmcoil, hope for a removal. I'm thinking of something that beats Tron in the long run, and I could see Obzedat, Ghost Council as an option (also good VS Ensnaring Bridge, prison strats and wrath effects, that's why I bring him up). As I'm sure the aficionados of the archetype have tried him, what can you guys tell me about his pros and cons ? Only O-Stone can reach him, sounds scary enough.
Another card I want to play as a 1-of is Oblivion Ring / Banishing Light. Why isn't it played ? It's a card we can see in various Martyr Life decks, just saying. No more Pod to deal with but PWs, big guys and so on.

On the subject of Stony Silence. It's not leaving my SB anytime soon. It just stops Affinity too hard. It's a tough match. They have like 40+ threats (I mean their land can kill you for !@#$ sake). Sundering Growth kills 1 threat. While you definitely need a disenchant equivalent in your side (for all those additional applications you mentioned), you'll need it + silence to really deal with Affinity. I originally started running Engineered Explosives and Hour of Reckoning in my mainboard to combat affinity (and recently delver). Despite the bannings, I'm probably going to keep my 60 the same for a bit. I'm curious to see how it does against a shift back toward control/midrange.

I could see O-ring being a good option now. I've never had room, but I may be a better choice than EE or Hour.

My trick against Tron is to run 25 land, 3 of which are ghost quarters in the main 60. Treat the GQ's like removal spells in game 1, then side them out (back down to 22/23 land, whatever is comfortable) for game 2 if you're in a match where they don't help. They are also good against Affinity (another deck that see's plenty
of play), as they rarely run more than 1 or 2 basic lands, so the GQ's are more like Strip Mine.

I would not run Go For the Throat. If you know Tron is a threat (and Affinity probably will be, too), it's not a great choice. You probably want Murderous Cut, Slaughter Pact, or something weird, like Engineered Explosives. I don't recommend 1 off's, so I'd cut the Liliana, and either trim an anthem or the sword, as you have ample anthem effects.

So what I have been thinking is something like:

Im very unsure of SB cards though.

I am liking the molten rain for junk and tron,

The thoughtseize and slaughter games for twin/other combo

the timely reinforcements for burn etc

the Stony silence and Kataki are for affinity obviously but someone probably knows SB bettr than me with this type of deck. Opinions?

I think Slaughter Games is one of the best options for a red splash. An uncounterable memoricide is just crushing to combo decks. Personally, for game 1, I think it's important to have too much thoughtseize, rather than too little. Thoughtseize is proactive removal (as mentioned above), so it can crush a deck game 1, then be boarded out game 2/3 if there's a better card. I'd find a place for it in the main, or just cut it from the side, as you already have 6 equivalents.

On as side note, I'm not sure 4x Lightning Bolt is mandatory in this build. It's a good card, but doesn't have any synergy without Snapcaster or Young Pyromancer.
    Quote from Lord_Dorando »
Gonna be honest, I would personally cut the two Bitterblossom MD and move two timely reinforcements to the main. Fill up the extra two sideboard slots with 2 Dismember. But all of my advice might be useless, as without delver, I cannot even guess the effectiveness of timely reinforcements anymore.
I agree with removing the BB for Timely Reinforcements. I played it a full year before TC was printed, and it works. In a Mardu list, you will shock in lands, and you will thoughtseize. Odds are you're opponent will drop a mana dork, or Bob, and you'll hit both modes. I don't think I'd put something as simple as Dismember in the side (you have a TON) of removal. You probably want Rest in Peace in the sideboard. It's still pretty darn handy.

You should put in bold what defines a brew and what defines a splash. A lot of people here miss the concept.
    Quote from MasterFlex »

    1) We all agree that the core of the deck is Lingering Souls, Spectral Procession, Anthems, Thoughtseize effects, and Path to Exile. If your Mardu/Abzan lists don't include the core, I call that a brew, not a splash.

I'll just bold my previous comment. There's also section 2 of the primer. If folks are still confused (I know occasionally we all have trouble with words), I've included a visual guide. The cards pictured in the banner of the primer are the core cards, too Wink

Thanks MasterFlex for setting the record straight. It makes it easier to keep everyone on track.

I'd like to say to everyone, that with the recent bans, we should welcome ex-pod players or anyone who wants to try something to new with open arms to BW(x) Tokens. It could give us a refreshing perspective on the deck and ideas. That being said, some decks just aren't really tokens when you add in Lingering Souls. As MasterFlex said, there are some guidelines and not just "what do you think about this list".

So, with the influx of players new to tokens, we should be able to improve our deck. To the "new ones", focus on tokens, and help us improve it! Smile
Thank you for reading my post.
You should really go back a page and read my post...

    Kher Keep lol?

    Seems pretty straightforward. Results?
Because this is what happens every time someone posts a "here's a list, what do you think" post. *facepalm*

    Anyway,

I updated the primer. Check it out. I'll start adding cards to the splashes section as time allows. I'll also add a "change log" so we can keep up with what's new.

I'm also trying to get into B/W. I wanted to go an Aristocrats 4.0 style route with green for the sake of versatility and with humans as a theme:

(don't know how to do the decklist box, sorry)
    4 Champion of the Parish
    4 Doomed Traveler
    3 Voice of Resurgence
    4 Dark Confidant
    4 Cartel Aristocrat
    4 Blood Artist
    4 Mayor of Avabruck
    3 Varolz

    4 Tragic Slip
    4 Path to Exile

    22 Lands
    4 Temple
    4 Sacred Garden
    4 G/B
    4 Windswept Heath
    4 Marshflat
    1 Plain
    1 Swamp

I always thought that Blood Artist was criminally underplayed, and I loved his use in Standard's Aristocrats and the ability to stabilize/kill your opponent with little interaction. The natural interaction was Cartel Aristocrats, and from there, a human-theme picked up. Champion grows really big, Doomed Traveler makes him bigger and presents another sac-worthy target for Blood Artist. Bob is in there for the card advantage and human theme.

Now, I went with green as opposed to red for the following reasons- Green adds VoR for Jund/Rock matchups, especially now with the bannings. It also allows access to anti-Affinity matchup cards, as well as throws in Varolz for another sac outlet/way to pump up the creatures and Mayor for tokens/human interaction. Tragic slip becomes a one-cost removal spell for any creature with less upside than Path, and the lost of the curve makes Bob not hurt that much.

    Thoughts?
This isn't anywhere near the BW Token core. That deck is not in the correct forum.
    Quote from Malt_Meister »
I was seriously considering building this deck now that my Pod deck is worthless, and I am having trouble deciding between this neat Mardu list or something else. What do you think?

The SB would likely have to be changed, but if you recognize it this is the list that did well at the MOCS in December I think.

I don't know how strong something like this is going to be or if traditional BW is better or splash green for Voice and Rhino
    Neither is one...
    Quote from Adams »
Maybe you should create new topic in "Modern Deck Creation" called Wx/BWx Tokens?

I am not hater, just BWx tokens never won big or medium tournament, looking at TC Decks i can barely see 2 token decks with R or G making result, the rest is classic BW. So that decks are just not established, they're brews.
Having one topic for all magic colours is just bad and unreadable.

Before you call me hater - I really appreciate brewing and trying to improve our lovely deck, but keeping it clear will be better for everyone.
I opened the floodgates to splash discussion because the core of BW tokens is firmly agreed upon, but has been lacking consistent results. I hoped discussing splashes could give the deck an edge against the Khans meta aggro. Khans also brought in new fetchlands, giving us potential to improve the mana base of a splash. Previously, splashes had been too taxing to the base, and didn't actually help the deck. I played Abzan tokens a year and half ago, and it stunk. Going forward, splashes do need to get some serious consideration, even if we eventually opt away from them.

With that said, the new B&R announcement gives us much to discuss. No Birthing Pod will shake things up, and many of us have tilted our mainboards with cards like Auriok Champion, Relic of Progenitus and Timely Reinforcements to fight Delver. There are also new cards to discuss and try, like Monastery Mentor. We should not get carried away discussing splashes.

I will be adding a "Splashes" section to the primer. If you're posting a slash deck, please conform to these guidelines.

    1) We all agree that the core of the deck is Lingering Souls, Spectral Procession, Anthems, Thoughtseize effects, and Path to Exile. If your Mardu/Abzan lists don't include the core, I call that a brew, not a splash.
    2) We're dipping our toes into unproven territory. If you're presenting a splash list, please don't just say, "what do ya'll think about this list" without first providing your explanation of the card choices. Questions of that nature (without justification) are what causes a spiral of non sequitur comments.
    3) Discussing the merits of a single splash card (Slaughter Games, Hide // Seek) is fine, assuming you post your opinion of the card first.

Most of the games ive played i control the board and win with card advantage generated by the tokens or with a bladehold. Very few times i actually have 5+ creatures in play. Like i said, im almost never the beatdown for the majority of the game. I spend the first 4 turns usually just pathing/bladeing/thoughtseizing them and dropping a token producer. As for definitions of what is midrange is probably where the confusion comes since your understanding is different to mine.
No need to debate definitions. MTGSal's wiki has explanations of the major deck archetypes. Here's Midrange and Aggro-Control. I guess I need to add what I'm about to say to the primer. The deck should transition from control to aggro pretty quickly. From there the goal should be protecting your threats. In game 1, an ideal curve would be thoughtseize and utility turns 1/2 (utility being cards like windbrisk, an anthem, relic of progenitus, engineered explosives). Turn 3 is token time. From there, protect the tokens, path opposing threats, and turn your creatures sideways. Game 2/3 is similar, but your utility cards are now targeted hate cards (RiP, Stony Silence, etc).

I understand that ideal isn't always possible. We do have the ability to play like a midrange deck, control and grind down our opponents, then push with a Hero of Bladehold, or similar, to win. Playing a midrange style is not recommended unless you have no other option. Often against aggro decks, I find myself having to play as a control or midrange deck. Often turn 3 tokens are just too little, too late. I have to invest an extra turn or two into clearing my opponents threats.

Compared to major mid range strategies, this deck can't keep up on card draw alone. Abzan Midrange, Jund, and WUR all have card draw engines to keep their hands full that we just lack. Fortunately, we actually have an advantage against midrange decks. We produce a high volume of threats very quickly, which is difficult for them to control efficiently, causing their "push for a long game" strategy to fail. If you want to see a pure BW Midrange deck, we have a forum for that too (and I also wrote its primer).

Sorry, but this isn`t true. There is really no reason to seperate them. First both versions are midrange decks
I agree with the first two sentences, but we're an agro/control deck, not midrange. Midrange is a control deck that plays heavy control in the early game, then lands a big scary monster to win the game. When we go into token swarm mode, we're pure agro.

I think discussing splashes is fine. I think it furthers the evolution of the deck. As I mentioned in my previous post, we've discussed pure BW token lists pretty endlessly, and not made any headway on producing an "ideal" list. I also think our list and analysis of all available BW token cards is as complete as possible.

I do think we need more structure in how we discuss splashes. I'd like to add a splash section to the primer. Please PM me cards that need to be added to the list. I've run BWg tokens, but never BWr.
