In the primer I define the core of the deck as Lingering Souls, Spectral Procession, Path to Exile, Thoughtseize, and anthems. If you run some combination of all that, you're BW Tokens. That does produce a ton of variance, as there are a high number of flex slots. Still, the goal of the deck is the same, disrupt early game, virtual card advantage either by token swarm or army in a can (brimaz, hero, BB), then slam an anthem FTW.

Right now, BW Tokens barely has a strong enough record to merit a forum, none the less multiple for each flavor of the deck. Unfortunately, the purpose of the thread is to distill the ideal decklist, which is practically impossible with such high variance. I knew that variance was (and will continue to be) a concern when I wrote the primer. As such, I believe the thread should focus on card choices, and when they are better/worse than alternatives. Until we have more representation in dailies, premiers, and other note worthy events, discussing the sub variants of the deck is a never ending, circular conversation.

Tournament report from a PTQQ today (Made T4), a bit different take on the deck as I have been experimenting with many things will have comments after report, but first my list. Sorry not good at formatting could use help with that.

    [ deck ]
    # card name
    [ /deck ]

Remove the spaces in [ deck ] and you're in business. You can also type out the deck, highlight the list, and click the "Deck" button in your editing tool bar. Here's what it looks like done. If you hit the "quote" button, you can see what I've done to your list.

    Thanks for the tourney report!

I made the switches that I had mentioned in my earlier post, and I am very happy with the direction if the deck at this exact moment. We had a 5 player moden event on tuesday, and I took 2nd.

Rnd 1 vs U/W/R Kiki control
g1: was way to fast for him and beat him on t5.

G2: ended up racing 2 Restoration Angeles with 3 spirits and promise on board. Casted zealous for win, but he had remand, and lost following turn.

G3: he kept a 1 land, aND I didnt. Won easily.

Rnd 2 vs B/R Zombie Infestation
G1: Flew over him. He only saw a grave crawler and bloodghast.

G2: t2 zombie infestation with squee...couldn't do anything, ended up losing badly.

G3: he mulls to 4 and only hits 3 lands with no infestation. Won easily with Elspesth.

    Rnd3 vs Mono black rack.

G1: obliterator t4 and no path...

G2: he was stuck on 3 land and I flew around.

G3: this was the best game yet...I was at 6, he was at 5. Oblit on board and a mutavalut on board, I have 6 spirits (4 tapped) and Auriok Champ, with Elspesth. He attacks, I miss counted my math, and scoop..after reviewing board, I block with 3 guys, take 4, sac 3 lands, then swing for lethal. I punted it.

Overall, promise is gone. For what, I'm not too sure. I'm happy with it, and I feel that, in the right hands, this is easily a t1 deck. There are a lot of possible lines with this deck, and the sideboard has to be perfect, but overall it's an amazing deck. I'll do a better job next time I post. I'm doing this on my phone.

I think that Relic of Projenitious needs to be MD. The Storm matchup is terrible, and relic helps a little bit. As for the side, I'm going to drop the promise for Liliana of the Veil. Otherwise, I think everything is pretty sound.

Hey guys. I am finally able to post my current deck list. This is an older list, which is just the modern masters event deck, highly modified. I have plans to modify the deck list, and I will go over them after wards with possible changes. I have been playing this deck for only about a month and a half. It isn't the fastest deck, nor is it the best deck, but what really is considered the best deck in modern? That answer is debatable until were blue in the face. Now for less talk, and more deck lists!

First, I want to say that the sideboard is just generic right now. Couple cards I picked up from a buddy who was playing BW tokens, the biggest one is Promise of Bunrei. I think this card has potential. It might be somewhat slow, but you'll mainly bring it in versus the slower control match-ups. I have 6 cards in mind that I want to take out to possibly make this deck better, and those 6 cards are as follows; 2 Honor of the Pure 2 Hero of Bladehold 2 Brimaz, King of Oreskos and 1 Sword of Fire and Ice . The cards I'm thinking about adding are as follows: 3 Thoughtseize and 2 Raise the Alarm and 2 Sword of War and Peace. I don't think we need 6 anthem enchantments, but rather have additional token creators.

I absolutely love Brimaz, King of Oreskos, but I beleive that he is just too slow in this deck, and the same goes for Hero of Bladehold. As powerful as both of these creatures are, they are just too slow. I would like to find room for a 3rd Auriok Champion. This card can make or break the burn match-ups. If you believe you're going to see a lot of burn, I'd even consider going up to 4. Meta dependent though.

I do have some changes I want to make to the mana base. Specifically, I want to put in Fetid Heath and an additional Arid Mesa. I'm not the biggest fan of the Windbrisk Heights for the simple fact that it just seems slightly too slow for what we're trying to do. I could be completely wrong in that analysis though.

I had commented on zergling2525's deck list yesterday, and I think it might be worth trying that style of tokens out. I can't be certain that it is a good version, but it could be worth trying out.

That is what I've been playing as of late. The main problem I have been running into is I don't have enough people to play against. Not a lot of people in my area play modern, and those that do either A) play rouge decks that I just smash or B) play storm and go off t3/t4 consistently. I hope to get some decent feed back on this list. Specifically what people are doing in their sideboards that are different from mine.
Mainboard Relic of Progenitus seams like a solid meta call, especially until Treasure Cruise gets banned.

Here's my advice on the deck. Leave Windbrisk in for now. With the walkers and large creatures you run, it can create some super crazy plays. If it starts to feel like a dead card, take it out. I'd try to get the Ghost Quarters into the main. You have a ton of fetches and duals. Having two more colorless sources shouldn't put you back. That gives you room for an extra RIP and Rule of Law in the side (more help for that storm match).

Your mainboard relic will slow down Storm, as will Rest in Peace. Additionally, Rule of Law stops the combo hard. Your discard targets for game one are Past in Flames and Pyromancer Ascension followed by Desperate / Pyretic Ritual. If you live the dream of turn 1 relic, remember to exile something every turn. Crack the relic in response to Past in Flames, not after, as most of their deck is instant speed, and they can combo on the stack. Also remember that past in flames only give the cards currently in their graveyard flashback. Make sure they don't try to argue that its effect lasts the whole turn for any spell in their graveyard. With luck, game 1 is winnable. In game 2, they'll run a few sideboard bounce spells to fight RIP and Relic (Void Snare, Swan Song, Echoing Truth, etc). They'll probably only have 3/4 of these cards, so they are your thoughtseize targets. If you don't start with thoughtseize, having two combo stoppers works, too. They'll probably manage to bounce the first one, but will fizzle trying to bounce the second. Finally, killing them is pretty straight forward, but don't be greedy. They have access to anger of the gods, and echoing truth, which can ruin token fun times.

On a personal note, my meta has storm, living end, and affinity. I pack 3 RIP's and 2 Rule of Law effects sideboard, as well as 2 Engineered Explosives in my main (hits ascension, and goblin electromancer at X = 2), so I've yet to loose a match to Storm.

Melissa DeTora has an article on BW tokens up today: http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=12235

I wouldn't play Gather the Townsfolk ever. She even says it's the worst Token producer.

I won't play it too. Even with Fateful hour, the tokens doesn't have any evasion and is a sorcery too.

I added the article to the primer. I also would not run Fateful Hour. I'm surprised she didn't mention Timely Reinforcements. While it competes with the 3cmc slot, if you're trying to tilt the deck against delver, you should be able to hit both modes easily.

I tried using 2x Murderous Cut last night at FNM instead of 2x Doom Blade and it proved very impressive. I use 6 Fetches and 19 Instants and Sorceries (excluding Lingering Souls) and was able to cast it for whatever I wanted, usual B. I have gone 3-0 at quite a few FNM's with BW Tokens and went 2-0-1 last night.

I am trying to post my decklist but am struggling. Any help with how to format the list would be great.

To tag a deck, type your cards in the format # card, like such:

    4 card
    3 next card
    4 etc

To give the different parts of the deck titles (like "creatures") just write a word with no # in front), for example:

    Sideboard
    3 side card

After you have typed everything in, highlight the list, then click the "deck" icon in the forum's formatting bar. You can also manually write the deck tags around a block of text by typing [ d e c k ] start, and ending [ / d e c k ] (just remove the spaces). Also, use the heading "sideboard" last, as the deck tag tool automatically makes that its own column.

I'd try to get a thoughtseize or two in the main to make room for stony silence in the main. Stony is sooo crippling against affinity (unless it's just not really in your meta). On that subject, why Aven Mindcensor against affinity (they don't search their library, to my knowledge)? Rule of law doesn't seam helpful against burn. On turn 3, you'd way rather have a creature, and they have plenty of instant speed spells, so one a turn isn't a horrible limit. Finally, you have more creatures than token spells, so maybe 3-1 honor-virtue, as giving a buff to brimaz and sculler is hella nice.

@Hamster, really don't sweat it. Combo Elves needs a special sideboard (Torpor Orb, mainly), and Burn and Delver can win even with sideboard hate. As a burn player myself, I've won matches around leylines. Building a good hate based sideboard like ours requires familiarity with your meta, and your deck.

@Everyone, thanks for all the reports! Everything we do here is pure speculation without reports.

I took my Esper variant to a 15 person modern tournament (essentially an unknown meta for me) and I am sorry to say I did miserably. 0-3-1.

I just couldn't close out games when I needed to. Here is the list I played. I know my sideboard is missing a few cards, but I didn't have Leyline and Runed Halo available to me.

Match 1 was against boggles and I just couldn't do anything. It was a fast 0-2. I didn't have anything in the board that would really help me. I am not sure what I could have done.

Match 2 was against American control and I lost 1-2. I crushed it game 1, and then games 2 and 3 I just couldn't hold off the bolt fest and Keranos, God of Storms was a huge pain. He slow rolled me and I just started picking off my tokens. It was very miserable.

Match 3 was against Angel Pod and I drew 1-1-1. It was a bit of a same since the last game I would likely have won, but I was just playing slow since I am still learning modern. I won the first game with Creeping Tar Pit, it did some serious work for me. Eventually I just flooded the board with tokens and an anthem and that barely did it. He has a Spike Feeder out, which almost threw me off because of the life gain. But he made a misplay which made up for my misplay and I won. Lost game 2 to beats, and game 3 I was doing very well with a solid board, but drew on turns.

Match 4 was against Kiki pod. Lost 1-2. I was one turn away in game 1 from winning, he was down to 3, when he combo'd off. Game 2, I just get tokens out with anthems and that was that. Game 3 I just didn't have the cards that I needed. I also made a mistake by not keeping mana up for a negate. I tap out and he drops the pod and begins to do badness to me. I had no definitive answers.

I dropped with one round left. I am somewhat disheartened by this result. The deck tested really well online, but just flopped when playing it in real life. It felt too slow. Someone mentioned Mark of Asylum as a real potential. It hoses Anger of the Gods and Keranos, God of Storms which was a really big problem. Oddly enough on the day, didn't see one bob or Goyf.
Don't be too disheartened. Boggles is nearly impossible (imo). I've ran Liliana, disenchant, chalice of the void, and EE, all at once, and still have never won that match. I can't even describe how much I hate that deck. Control is top tier, and is just tough, same with pod (they have the added ability to win via crazy draws, like top decking their one Kiki).

As for the deck, I think negate style permission isn't what we want. We tap out often to play creatures and tokens. Holding up mana for a counter sounds tough, and it can't deal with a threat already on the table like a path or doom blade can. I also think if you should run a blue draw, it has to be treasure cruise (although military intelligence does look very solid).

    Thanks for the advice!

I totally agree, but I sadly don't have access to Fetches as of yet. The only one I have is a windswept heath, and I'm not sure a single fetch will make any difference. Marsh Flats will be a future investment.

As long as you stay BW, you can make do with any fetch that works for Plains. You'll only want to fetch one Godless Shrine per game and you shouldn't be playing any Swamps. Play one if you absolutely have to, but you want nearly every land to make W.
You should have at least 1 swamp. Ghost Quarter and Blood Moon are a thing, besides, fetching a shockland for a turn 1 thoughtseize is a big no no.

Hey community. Thinking about trying out a graveyard based deck, like uses the graveyard heavily, so I thought I'd try dredge. Although I am not sure which Dredge variant would be best: Manaless or LED. They both seem great, one with a combo finish, one more of an aggressive finish. Which one would you people recommend to be the most fun?

Manaless is fun to play due to it completely shattering all regular magic conventions. No land, always on the draw, wins with creatures, but never casts them. My manaless list runs 61 cards in the main because I'm gonna flip the whole deck anyway. It also shrugs of most attempts from your opponent to directly interact (outside of graveyard hate). It's pretty fun to watch jund turn 1 drs, turn 2 Liliana, and realize she has no relevant abilities against us. Unfortunately, if you play at a lgs regularly, you will get hated out. It's a great way to start, but LED has more overall game.

Here's a splash blue deck I have been brewing....still not sure TC is correct yet...the deck imo would love DIG but thats too much blue, could easily be a black draw like read the bones....blue adds a few cards to the board like Negate and possibly notion thief...although not sure how realistic that is..but fun yes!

Looks heavy on anthems. I'd go to 6 anthems, and probably fill out Honor of the Pure. Honor + Geist sounds super fun.

What would you guys suggest as a SB for a open meta? I may be taking this deck to the modern IQ this sunday in columbus... its either this deck or 8rack if I can go!

I run this for unknown meta

    2x Batwing Brume
    2x Chalice of the Void
    2x Leyline of Sanctity
    1x Nevermore
    2x Relic of Progenitus
    2x Rootborn Defenses
    2x Stony Silence
    2x Sundering Growth
I'm not a fan of packing 2x everything in the side. We have some really powerful sideboard cards, and it sucks to put them in, then not draw them. For an IQ, if you're winning, bet on playing against a few of the big name decks (pod, Jund, Twin, and UWR Control), as well as the cheaper, more popular decks (burn, storm, affinity, and now, Delver). Other note worthy decks are Tron, Scapeshift, living end and Amulet of Vigor. They will probably make an appearance, but will you actually be matched against one? Maybe, but less likely than the others I mentioned. I wouldn't worry about Death and Taxes, Elves or similar small name decks (they're really for local game shop play). With that in mind, I'd recommend the follow as a must:

From there, I'd finish out with

Other strong suggestions include defense grid (anti control and delver), Chalice of the Void (set at 1 hoses boggles), and Engineered Explosives (boggles, affinity mainly, but can hit other targets).

I also recommend tilting your main against burn. Finding room for Timely Reinforcements I think would be a good idea. I also like to run EE in my main. Hitting Grim Lavamancer, Goblin Guide, a crap ton of artifacts, goyf, scooze, and bob (just to name a few) sounds like solid mainboard tech at a big event.

What's with the sideboard of lotus petals lands and decays? What do you that jank against also ew 14 lands

I was wondering the same thing... The Dread Return Package only has Ashen Rider and Iona (no Elesh Norn or Griselbrand), only 2 firestorms and 2 crypts. The rest of the side is dedicated to playing Abrupt Decay (I'm guessing that's goal of the extra land and petals). I get that decay can't be countered, but is that worth neutering the rest of the side?

I'm fairly new to this deck and brand new to this forum... I dont really have time to read everything right now, but after reading the primer I noticed that solemn visitor wasnt talked about in the walker section... whats the general consensus on him? Is he good, bad, great, terrible? Maybe better than this walker, but worse than this one? Right now I'm running two LoIs but I really like the idea of SV...
As I say in the primer, my recommendation falls firmly with Elspeth Tirel. Every ability she packs is powerful and relevant. She can turn a loosing game around. The other three walkers require you to already have a board presence. With no other creatures in play, LoI, SV, and KE are horribly expensive attended knight. Don't get me wrong, if you have good board state, those three will keep it good. After Tirel, I like SV. His +1 is soooo punishing.

The 5cmc shouldn't detract from Tirel. We have 3 and 2cmc drops for days. We're not trying to curve into her, we'll just play her when need be.

While we're talking about edge cases, what does everybody think about Beckon Apparition or Vile Rebirth?

I'm thinking the upside is instant-speed graveyard hate against dredge, undying, Snapcaster spells, and the new delve-draws running in blue (boy, are those a pain to play against Frown ). And another token, after all.

Downside: The effect is so low-impact that it doesn't seem worth the card.
I've always wanted Beckon Apparition to be good, but it just doesn't get there. One spell for 1 1/1 is counter to our primary deck philosophy of multiple creatures per spell. Additionally, I don't think removing a single card is worth our time. If they really need the grave, we can RiP it.

    Hey, thanks for you help.
Well, this is my first time at this store so I really don't know what I'm up against.
Drown in sorrow is good against affinity and tokens imo. The thing is I only have 2x stony silence right now. I have more zealous persecution though.
It's super tough to make a recommendation against an unknown meta. Just going by global meta, the top 8 are Burn, Delver, Affinity, Pod, Scapeshift, Jund, Twin, and Control. I honestly can't say much about new delver, as I haven't played against it. As for the others, you already have solid sideboard options against them, just up the numbers where you can. Torpor Orb is a good option for an unknown meta, too, as it stops more budget decks like combo elves and death and taxes, while also being a good tool against pod and twin.

I've had trouble with only 22 land in the past. The scullers are iffy. While they keep burn and UWR control from lighting bolting your face, they don't synergize with the intangible virtue (which you need because of Sorin). I also recommend getting your kill spells (dismember) into the main. I think our sideboard gets stretched thin fast, and it's better to side out kill rather than in. Finally, I'd give Elspeth Tirel a run over Knight-Errant.

I'll use my list in the primer for an example. Out deck has a few flex spots. First is the targeted kill spells. Against a deck like amulet of vigor that runs 8 creatures, you don't need much, so take them out. Next, if you run extra land (like me) to support tech edge, that's another flex spot. I don't need them against twin or storm, so I can side them out for torpor orb or rest in peace. Next are the planeswalkers. I think they mainly benefit us in control and midrange matchups. For agro, like affinity, I'd rather have stony silence. So those are the main areas you can remove cards. What to remove is situational, and will require your best judgement.

Tl:dr - anthems, token generators, and discard are the core. Leave that alone, and trim other cards as needed.
