Ever since new Nissa, Steward of Elements was spoiled, I was overjoyed with the fact that my beloved Coiling Oracle might get its time in the spotlight. So I decided to sleeve up a Sultai (BUG) list and try it out this Monday, here's the list:

    Went 3-0-1 with following matchups:

    Won 2-1 against Eldrazi Tron
    Won 2-0 against 4c Humans
    Won 2-1 against Skred
Lost 1-2 against Eldrazi Tron (ID last round, played for fun)

    Few thoughts about card selection:

Throne of the God-Pharaoh - love it. Having a recurring Shaman effect on the board for mere 2 mana helps close those grindy matchups where board gets clogged. Obviously the earlier we get it down, the more value it provides. Works wonders Heritage Druid by allowing us to tap our board for mana and drain via Throne.
Nissa, Steward of Elements - what got me interested the most is her X casting cost which provides flexibility depending on the stage of the game. We can drop her as early as T2, +2 to Scry 2 and tick her up to 3. Prone to bolt removal but we've already gotten the scry out of her. Since our deck is already built around Collected Company this works perfectly with her 0 ability as we only need her on 3 loyalty to put any creature in our deck straight onto the board. Where she really shines is her ultimate. Casting her for X=8 costs us 8 mana, the same as Ezuri + overrun activation but allows us to attack for 10 over air and close the game on the spot.
Coiling Oracle - running U allows us to replace Elvish Visionary with this little gem. By putting lands straight into play it thins our library and ramps us. Notable difference is that it reveals the top card so your opponent will know what you're putting in your hand as opposed to Visionary that simply draws us the card. Oracle also works very well with new Nissa and her scry ability. If you need a land, use Nissa, scry 2, leave a land on top and follow up with Oracle which will put that land into play.
Unified Will - W has Selfless Spirit to deal with boardwipes, B has Thoughtseize to deal with that or combo. Blue provides us with countermagic. The downside of counterspells is that they force us to keep mana up but a well timed counter can turn the tide of the battle. Deck plays a bit slower than it's GB/GW counterparts which is why I feel it counterspells fit right in. People don't expect Elves to use counter magic so there's an element of surprise for now. There's also the option of playing Negate or even Spell Pierce.
Monastery Siege - a pet card of mine to deal with decks like Burn or BGx which pack lots of targeted removal. Haven't had the chance to cast it at all nor was I paired against any decks that would warrant boarding it in. 3 is probably too many, 1 feels like not enough.
Essence Warden - went for Wardens instead of Sentinels to offset the life loss from fetchlands.

Obviously the sample is very small and all this information should be taken with a grain of salt for now. Mana base feels particularly clunky at the moment especially since I'm only splashing black for the Shaman. I'll keep you posted.

    No Nettle Sentinel?

Nope. I just don't think it does enough to warrant its inclusion. With fetchlands there is some life loss involved which is where Essence Warden's come in. They also come in handy against mirror, Merfolk, tokens and Burn. Because I'm running U and no Chord of Calling there's less chance of chaining elves via Heritage Druid + Nettle combo.

On the westvale vs. Gavony, how often do you find yourself against the Deaths Shadow decks with 5 creatures and possibly a 6th to sack to a Lilliana? At least in my play area a lot of the traditional Jund has moved to Death shadow where i feel like having 5 creatures and 5 mana is hard to assemple. Haven't played with the Westvale since the Death Shadow deck became a thing though, so thhat is pure speculation.

But if 5 creatures and 5 mana is hard to assemble, how is Gavony any better in this regard then? If you don't have the creatures to put counters on, it's just as bad. I think your evaluation of Westvale is too narrow if you're just looking at the DSJ matchup. But there are other matchups like Burn or the likes where Westvale can mean an instant win.

Wow, Lots of sultai elf talk. It's very interesting. It's my favorite color combo + my favorite tribe. I didn't know any of you took that color combination seriously or were even testing it for that matter.

I've not seen Beck // Call being mentioned. The Glimpse of nature like effect is strong, but is the mana cost too restrictive? Is it too "winmoar"?

Also, I have a feeling a Sultai build would make our deck slower, but not necessarily weaker. Like I feel we'd value an approach that focus more on Card advantage over Speed, meaning we'd become midrange. Or at least I think, maybe I'm wrong.

Also, Coiling oracle is an elf. Huh... color me surprised.

Sultai version is definitely a tad slower and leans a little bit more towards midrange. But you have several options to close the game in form of Ezuri, Shaman, Throne or Nissa.

Beck was played in the combo version using Cloudstone Curio. You needed the Heritage Druid + Nettle Sentinel combo to generate infinite mana and go off.

Thoughts on bant elves over sultai.White gives better sb options and imo shaman is overrated

Shaman is a real powerhouse though. Though now with Throne of the God-Pharaoh serving as a recurring effect it would be worth trying out. After all white has the most powerful sideboard choices.

Did some more testing with BUG version, adjusted the list a little bit.

Lost 1-2 versus Merfolk (on the draw)
Lost 1-2 versus Jeskai Control (on the draw)
Won 2-1 versus Junk (on the draw)
Won 2-1 versus Burn (on the draw)
Lost 0-2 versus Infect (on the play)
Won 2-1 versus Elves (WGB) (on the draw)
Lost 1-2 versus Jund (on the play)
Lost 1-2 versus Tribal Zoo (on the play)

Outside of Infect matchup, all the other losses were very close or due to mulligans (down to 4 against Merfolk G3). Deck definitely has game just like its Abzan or GB counterpart.

Some more notes about certain cards:

Monastery Siege - powerhouse against Burn, won me game 3 alone. Shines the most if cast on T2 naming Dragons. Still good later in the game by choosing Khans and getting extra card each draw. 2 copies seems to be the right number that I'll be sticking with.
Unified Will - I like it's flexibility which lets us counter even creature spells but it requires a board presence which we sometimes don't have. In those cases Negate is usually the better option.
Throne of the God-Pharaoh - added another copy and took out one Shaman. I'm keeping B purely for Shaman and while having 4 copies increases those odds of hitting double whammy off CoCo, it feels clunky when you're stuck with 2 copies in hand. Throne on the other hand can come down as early as T2 and then tick away each turn. Most of our elves tap for mana (or with the help of Heritage) so it's easy to turn it on. Be careful against Jund/Grixis as you give them target for their Kommand and also grows their Goyf.

    Isn't Rashmi a worse Sylvan Messenger ?

probably yes, they are similar but the messenger gives instant payoff, whereas rashmi is value over time. In the mainboard i liked the idea of rashmi because it works very well with Nissa's +1 ability and in game 1 i tend to like grindy value (the other options being Eternal Witness and Sylvan Messenger)
You can see in the "serious" version i removed it, as it was cool but not enough

Messenger provides immediate value whereas Rashmi needs to survive a turn and needs a followup spell to trigger. I'd rather see Master Biomancer on the 4CMC slot then.

I am not sure about Coiling Oracle. It is technically better than Visionary, but only so if you dropped a land that turn. Otherwise, we can simply use the drawn land and place it onto the battlefield. I was trying to do some scry 2 and land shenanigans, but realized that putting it directly onto the battlefield only mattered when I had already used up a land drop. Since, it stops the chain, I might go back to Visionary.

I like Oracle because it naturally ramps us. Having 3 lands on T2 is pretty good because even if they deal with out board, we're still only 1 land away from casting a CoCo just off the lands. It cannot be as easily chained as Visionary and it does reveal the top card but in my opinion that outweighs the cons. At least from the testing I've done so far.

True. But if they resolve a Whipflare, you might have a harder time getting to 4 lands to cast that Corrosion. Though Coiling Oracles are very helpful in ramping us. Feels good when you keep a solid one-lander, draw a second land on T2, cast Oracle and get another land in play.

Hurkyl also has the advantage of bouncing their Darksteel Citadels which in turn kills their Glimmervoids as well as bouncing any active (Bl)inkmoth Nexuses.

Wow, looks like I have a fiend in sultai and we independently came to the same conclusions, down to monastery siege! I have been testing Sultai and it has game, especially dropping Nissa down has been really good against most decks not named affinity. My mana base includes two gilt-leaf palaces and one shock. Has been smooth so far.

Just as a comment, it might be better if our Sultai sideboards incorporate heavily towards fast and or unfair matchups. I think Lead the Stampede x3 in the board may be too much since Nissa is a replacement for it against grindy matchups. I have two chords in the main and one in the side. My sideboard is leaning heavily against Affinity, Zoo, Chord decks and the like. Of course, this is dependent on meta Wink

Running U gives us Hurkyl's Recall which is a lot faster than Creeping Corrosion or Fracturing Gust.

Maybe you can steal game 1 if they tap out without knowing what they're up against. But once they see what's up, they won't tap out and you'll have a much harder time assembling the combo.

If it works for you, keep playing it and report how it goes. But for my taste, it takes too many pieces and too much setup to reliably pull it off Smile

Looks like a case of opponents not knowing the combo more than anything else. Druid has to live a whole turn and even then it can be killed in response to Vizier. Vizier isn't an elf and neither is Duskwatch Recruiter. Combo sounds good on paper but it's diluting the deck too much without being reliable enough to win on the spot.

Depends on whether you know what deck you're up against and how the rest of the hand looks like. If you're playing against a BGx deck which has both removal and discard, I rarely keep a one lander especially if I'm on the play.
If your hand looks something like 1x Forest, 3x Mystic/Llanowar, Visionary, Archdruid and CoCo then it might be worth keeping. While you need to draw a second land to generate 3 mana on T2, you can still play a Mystic T1, follow it up with two more dorks on T2 or simply go for the Visionary and see an extra card. If it's a land, you can play it and follow up with another dork.
When I'm evaluating starting hands, I think about how first 2-3 turns will play out. Then I take another look and ask myself, how will it play out if I assume my dork gets removed on T1. Do I have another play for T2 or am I stuck with a dead hand? It's trickier in game 1 where you're blind but as you get more experienced with the deck, the easier it gets in these kind of situations.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on the new Nissa. I believe it is viable. It helps our plan to get more dorks down, it is hard to kill for control and it helps our consistency. I feel that it could replace Lead the Stampede for those who are pushing that. I'd start with 1 or 2 in maindeck.

    @Treefolkmania

I really thing UG can become an option once we see if Nissa is good enough to switch colors. I have my doubts in dropping Shaman of the Pack and going three colors seems difficult. Perhaps Nissa plus Oracle would make it worth it, especially if we can bring in counters to protect us. Who knows.

Either going UG and lose the Shaman or like Abzan version go Sultai to keep the Shaman. I think she fits great in an elf deck. Scry is very valuable to us as it filters our deck, her -0 already works well with our deck since it's built around CoCo and therefore very low on curve. It's also a great late game topdeck which allows us to dump our mana into her and attack for 10 straight away.

Another option if we're going just UG is to replace Shaman with the new Throne of the God-Pharaoh. It doesn't play well with Nissa/CoCo but since we're tapping our elves a lot of the time, it could provide that extra reach that Shaman gives us in black.

Unsure if this has been mentioned before. Vizier of Remedies and Devoted Druid are pretty sweet together. In the past 2x Devoted Druid and 1x Ezuri on the board have won many games.

Maybe in SB against combo decks with little to no interaction, so we can go infinite asap. But other than that, I don't think it's a good fit. Not an elf and does nothing on it's own.

I've been running 17 lands recently. I haven't noticed much difference between 18 lands. What sort of sample size do we think would be necessary to see some sort of detrimental (or beneficial) effect? 1000 games maybe?

Also I'm totes on the UG list again with sideboard negates to just stomp tron/storm/ad naus etc.

My man. Would love to see the list. I'll be testing UG or maybe BUG list (for Shamans) with the new Nissa and Coiling Oracles along with some counterspells in SB.
