A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

Ok, here's the beef. My roommates and I were playing a friendly and impossibly long EDH game, in which I had Gideon, Champion of Justice out with 27 counters, and my roomie had an oblivion stone. The beef occurred when he popped oblivion stone to destroy all nonland perms without a fate counter, to which I countered by popping Gideon( I hadn't used any abilities of his at all that turn until then,) he says that the oblivion stone would have destroyed all creatures and gideon before I could use gideon's final ability of exiling all other perms. Chaos ensued, roomates awoke. Who's right? Would Gideon have exiled the oblivion stone before it popped, or would the obilvion stone murder gideon before he could even react? I was under the impression that planeswalker abilities happen as instants, but he claims the artifact would have activated first. Halp. BTW, Oblivion stone must be sacrificed to activate it's pop ability. FYI.
