I've tried to make transmutation work a number of times in modern. I think it's a trap for all but the most controlling of lists. It always just feels a turn too slow when you're going up against such powerful decks. Perhaps in a list going deeper into counterspells and sweepers it might make sense, but for most of the lists people are considering, I think it will be a disappointment. That said, it's still a spirit, and therefore jives with the rest of the deck. Might be worth a try.

It needs to be paired with vial to be good. As it is an ability it is unlike to get countered and then vial is also very hard to counter. You may be right that it is a trap, but it had potential. I just wish it could tutor out a captain, which would be nasty.

A few cards that are pushing me towards esper are the following: Dimir Infiltrator, lingering souls and Bloodghast. Honestly the infiltrator is the most interesting for me. Paired with vial it could do some serious work making your spirits very hard to deal with. Only issue is it can't search out your lord, but it can find image.

Nice, good catch with those two.

Transmute at Sorcery speed isn't terrible, but feels a bit clunky compared to our Instant speed spells and creatures. Still, tutoring for a 2-drop like Image, Rattlechains/Soul for protection does sound really good..

The Bloodghast isn't something I had considered, but I can see some cool interactions like running those and keeping an Oboro in your list to help ensure reliable landfall. Very grindy, not sure if it is the right direction or not but very interesting nonetheless!

Don't forget it can tutor out any 2 mana card, so it can grab favorable winds too. There are some other spirit bombs too. All of the Legendary dragons from saviors, the leiges, and the spirit avatars. Godhead of Awe could be a really nasty sideboard card.

Random card discard was removed (in the past) for a reason... It's not fun.. Plus with all the targeted discard being non-land, this is better than appears. Anytime you can remove a land drop (deliberate or inadvertent) is powerful. Potential is there to be had.

Truth. Keeping a 3 land hand, playing one and getting the other two lands hymned out sucks big time (happened to me at GP columbus).

My old BW Eldrazi deck only used 2 eyes. This ban just pushes me back that way and lets me setup mana fixing better. As a former eldrazi player, I think this was a great change. I loved the processor mechanic, but really didn't like the aggro version that much, even if it put up results.

I am glad control players got something. They needed a bone for a while. With that being said it will be miserable playing against you!
