A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

I decided to take the plunge and get fetches and build out my modern collection. I normally play Grixis colors, so I am going get a Scalding Tarn playset first. I plan to buy them slowly as singles or doubles. So after I finish the Scalding Tarn playset I was wondering what you guys think would be best for me to pickup next?

The deck I am working towards is a cruel control deck. And at this point I am not sure whether I plan to do just grixis colors or include just G or W. Misty Rainforest or Verdant Catacomb pops up on my list next. Arid Mesa is also up there just because I am toying around with an American Scepter deck idea.

So what do you guys think?

I am getting back into MTG after a 15 year break. I have a lot of cards from the Revised era where each of my friends chose a color, so when we would play it would be each side representing a color. I was blue and played with a bunch of Control Magics, Ray of Commands, Vesuvan Doppelgangers, etc. Looking to make a solid modern deck. Standard is alright, but I feel like it changes way to fast.

Favorite Playstyle (Aggro, Midrange, Control, Combo): Midrange and Control
How Competitive (For Fun, Local Tournament, MTGO, PTQ/GP): For Fun, FNM, Local Tournaments. Not looking to be a pro player
Favorite Cards/Colors: Blue, Black and Red are my favorites since I restarted (the bolas deck in Duels 13 sort of inspired me to come back).
Budget: Not looking to go crazy, but likely several hundred over a few months
Staples Owned: 4x Steam Vents, all Grixis check lands, 4x Coalition Relics, 4xChromatic Lantern, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, Terminatex4, Cruel Ultimatumx4, 4xDeathrite Shaman and some others (yes I did some shopping Wink

I have been trying to make a Grixis control deck, but I can't seem to make it work right. Any help would be great!
