You could make the same argument for any card type. I started playing in Beta, and I felt at the time that artifacts were this super special card type. The fact of the matter is, planeswalkers are a card type like any other. I think you're just stuck in the past in thinking that they are some sort of rare card form.

Fair call. Planeswalkers have a pretty unique effect when they hit the battlefield, maybe moreso than an artifact, you cant attack a Sol Ring which creates a cool tension when a Planeswalker hits. I dont think it's wrong for some people to amplify this by reducing their numbers and almost making a Planeswalker like an end boss. Saying you cant have too many is fine, but I think it comes down to how you want your games to play out and what archetypes you want to support. I had too many before and it was warping the games, I dont think that this was positive. I have reduced them slightly down and it was better for me and my playgroup.

I really like that flavour rule of allowing one only PW per name. I only have two crossovers at the moment, you have inspired to either swap them out with a different Walker, OR, take them out completely!

This is something I realised a few drafts ago. I was sitting in the middle and glanced across at the various board states and noticed everyone was locked into a Planeswalker vs Planeswalker midrange battle. I look at my hand, I was playing a Sultai control deck featuring about 7 Planeswalkers. I checked Cubetutor and noticed I had about 25+ Planeswalker in the Cube, considering I was running a 360 list I thought this was a little too high and it made me change 7 of them out down to 18. I feel, for me, this is a much better number. Yes, there are plenty of ways of dealing with them but an oversaturation of Walkers isnt something I wanted for my Cube. I remember when I first got back into Magic and I opened up a Foil Sorin, Lord of ISD from a Booster and had no idea what is was but was in awe. I want them to feel rare in my Cube, not being passed around all over the shop.

I dont love Hexproof as a mechanic, I dont like how uninteractive it is. Not that everything needs answers but not much can answer this guy. He makes all the premium removal useless. Again, this is my preference but I have taken all Hexproof out but Geist of St Traft, he stays in, he can be chumped pretty easily, yes, he wears pants well, but a lot more things can deal with him, even a Pyroclasm knocks him out.

I had a Mereike deck for ages but it progressed too far and got too powerful for my pretty casual meta so I pulled it apart. Merieke was pretty key to my decks success so Thousand-Year Elixir was a VERY key component. I ran all the best tutors (Enlightened, Vampriric, Demonic) and 9 times out of 10 they searched for this bad boy if I didnt have it. I ran Trading Post and few others to get it back. When you had Minamo out as well you felt invincible. Even Captain of the Mist albeit slow was a pretty useful card in this deck. For very little mana you could take a creature, untap Merieke (Captain of the Mist), take another, untap Merieke (Minamo), take another, untap Merieke (Thousand Year) and end up with the creature you want. Adding Brago to this list wouldnt be too bad either, especially with Thousand Year out giving Merieke pseudo haste. Take, attack, blink, untap, take etc.

Either way, have fun, Merieke is a great Commander, your opponents may not agree. Smile

After having to Dig Through Post to get some feedback on this card I am going to include it in my 360 card Cube. It seems like a very reasonable card in the right deck despite the UU.

p.s. I like the passion on this post. This is a good time to thank the Colby's and Antknee's et al for their great and ongoing contribution to Cube content. Thanks guys!

Falcone...this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks so much for putting this together. A great guide and has proven very useful in allowing me to build in archetypes into my cube, which is something it was seriously lacking.

    Hi all

I have been looking for a resource that details Magic archetypes/decks and maybe all of the commonly used Cube archetypes. I am pretty new to Cube and have a decent list so far, however, was looking at including some draftable archetypes. More specifically, I am looking for a description of these archetypes so I can understand them and what cards enable these strategies. I have a 360 card Cube and dont really have an appetite to make it larger as I dont get to Cube a lot and when I do, it's generally about 3 - 7 people. I assume a lot of people have been down this road so even some information or learnings from people as I can imagine you can go to deep on a strategy and dilute a colour etc and with a small Cube there would be a limited number of strategies you could include I guess.

I am sure this information is somewhere in this forum as there are a lot of clever people here, so if you could point me in the right direction, awesome!

    Cheers

I am still new to Cube and just keen on trying things out, like the Gods. I agree with these cards just being horrible a lot of the time however I want to atleast give them a go and see how horrible they can be.

If you are bored, this is my Cube list and is undergoing a few big changes.

Thanks K0olmini, I'll check back in here with updates when I get some games in with them. I think my cube allows for a little flexibility as well, I run powerful cards but also fair cards. No, power or cards like Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, etc. Games aren't over before they started, I try to make it accessible for the people who are new to Magic but allow depth for the more experienced players. I have seen Keranos in my Cube win all by himself.

I have recently put in Athreos, Pharika, Keranos and Iroas to test. I run all of the Gods with the exception of Erebos currently. I know these aren't a popular choice amongst most cube enthusiasts, however, that is the fun of cube, trying things and seeing how they pan out for you and your play group. The thing I like about all of the Gods are they are something for people to build around.

Good point. I think maybe the way for this to be interesting is if people have different boosters otherwise all the same cards will be played and will become quite stale, especially using BotG's. Worth a shot. It just seems such a waste of a card for something that could have been great in EDH. For what it's worth, I reckon Commander tax goes in top of Bestow. Casting him the second time as a Bestow would cost 9 etc.

I am still going to run once and see.

So, I am relatively new to EDH but have been playing long enough to have built about 8 decks now, have a healthy meta and love a good turn one Sensei's Top just as much as the next guy. I also like cracking boosters and playing sealed. The latest set, and more so, Chromanticore got me thinking, why not sealed Commander? Playing some sealed BotG's at a friends house and seeing people turf aside their freshly cracked Chromanticore's got me thinking, could a sealed Commander game exist if:

    1) Everyone had Chromanticore as their General;
    2) Everyone cracked 6 boosters and chose the best 59; and
    3) Added 40 basic land to the mix to make, CHROMMANDTICORE!

Honestly, I just like the name. However, thought I'd share this idea in case you have some spare boosters lying around and want to combine your love of sealed, Commander and wanted a good excuse to sleeve up Chromanticore.

I probably should have trialled this first before posting it but will do so soon and post impressions.

    Hi

First post and first decklist. I apologise it isn't in the correct format, I need to learn how to do this.

Land wise, I have a lot of duals, some basics and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Cavern of Souls, Strip Mine, Reliquary Tower, Vault of the Archangel, Thespian Stage.

Anyone with experience with a Merieke MP deck, please provide comments or advice!

Again, sorry about the poor format.
