Wizards isn't trying to kill combo. Despite Blazing Shoal, Rite of Flame, and Seething Song being banned, Infect and Storm are still kicking. If anything, they are trying to kill control. If you notice, there are actually fewer control decks in the format than combo.
If this is the case, then how can you explain the banning of combo pieces? My theory is because there are a lack of control decks in modern to keep combo in check.
