The matchup against Twin isn't good, but hopefully Rending Volley should fix that. Make it at least worth playing anyways.

Affinity isn't good, but it isn't an auto loss. Boarding is crucial, but I never figured out a great way to do so. Vault Skirge is the real problem.

Abzan is beatable. Their best draws crush you, but often you can get there against them. Especially against unexpecting opponents.

Infect is a decent mathchup with our efficient removal and solid clock to race them.

    Tron is an auto win.

My basic math skills would guesstimate a sixty percent win condition against that meta.

LOL at Tron being auto win...

Hey guys just a quick side note: I looked over the new primer and noticed an error--- "Guttural Response - A card that counters the ever-annoying Electrickery in the UWR or Twin matchups, Guttural Response is narrow, but can be huge swing in tempo."

Electrickery is not a blue instant.

Obelisk is just bad. I see it can work a little better than animosity when you have a stalled board. But if you are already in that situation you are probably going to lose anyway. Our deck does not want to get stalled. It's an all-in deck.

Obelisk is bad because it costs 6 and convoke is bad because we don't want our creatures to get tapped for mana. We just want them to get tapped to attack. Casting an obelisk means that you are tapping at least 3 creatures to convoke it. And three creatures not attacking is just like we are skipping an attack phase and thus we are losing one turn.

Your argument that it gets our creatures over mass removal does not work, because it works just against pyroclasm, which does not see a lot of play, except for tron. The other decks using this kind of mass removals simply use anger of the gods.

IMHO, obelisk is a really bad card, not worth consideration. Definitely better shared animosity, if you want to play a non-creature card that works as a lord effect.

You must not have read my post...pyroclasm, drown in sorrow, izzet staticaster, electrolyze, lightning bolt vs any of our 2/2s...
    Quote from SoDamnLucky »
true that. playing obelisk in a modern goblin deck is like playing chromanticore in a tribal zoo deck..just because it looks cute it doesn't mean it's good.

Whatever you guys say, I know it has won me games that may not have won without so Smile

3 dudes doing 9 damage is about the output of Animosity and Obelisk, but once you have the fourth creature with Animosity and you're swinging for 16, there is a difference between the two. Playing around sweepers definitely makes Obelisk seem good out of the board. I've wanted to test it the last two days but I haven't seemed to have drawn it sadly.

That is IF you are swinging into an empty field. What if you dont have loyalist out for trample...they all trade to any 1/1. Guess it depends on the meta.

Through your testing Tromni, would you say that Obelisk's impact on the board was worth the time and mana investment barring situations such as getting Reclamation Saged?

A point of skepticism I have with Obelisk is that it could just be either a win-more card (only effective when played on an already powerful board state) or it doesn't provide the necessary kick to make a difference justifying the momentum lost to cast it.

Obelisk is a payoff card for going wide. I'd rank our wide payoff options as Shared Animosity > Goblin Bushwhacker > Goblin Chieftain > Obelisk of Urd > Goblin King

Since I barely have enough room for Animosity, Bushwhacker, and Chieftain main, it's exclusively a sideboard card for me. The problem is it's just too slow in the matchups that matter, and vulnerable to splash hate. It would be best against zoo where it would enable all our tokens to trade for their cards. It gets splash hate from Pridemage, but it's also just too slow because zoo rarely gives us enough time to tap out for the convoke. Similarly it gets us out of Pyroclasm range, but we can't really take a turn off against Tron either. And against the miserable UWR control matchup, it dies to Wear//Tear just like Animosity and Goblin Assault (and at least Goblin Assault wins by itself against them)

I never found a matchup where it wasn't too slow, even though my initial visions of T3 Hordeling Outburst > Free Obelisk seemed to promising.

I guess it is because I am not running animosity. My opponents had no reason to side board artifact removal, and if they did it would possibly be dead in had if I didnt draw my 2 of...Idk, with my matchups recently I would never have wished it to be an animosity over obelisk with exception of the last game vs merfolk; only because we had such a stalled board state and I had 10 goblins in play. If its turn 3 and I have 3 goblins in play, 1/1s...more often than not it will be more beneficial to convoke obelisk than cast animosity, specially if any number of things are coming such as staticaster, drown in sorrow, pryoclasm, etc is coming. Just my 2 cents.

Also, I dont think Delver is going anywhere. They can function without TC as a tempo deck. Time will tell.

I will agree it is not really good vs Tron though..but Idk that shared animosity is either.

If you run mostly goblins then 4 works. But if you have lot of red color mana needed for non goblin spells then you possibly could be mama screwed running 4.

I think it at least warrants two slots in my sideboard. The Chalice in the board makes no sense to me, but my list also has Foundry Street Denizen. Now with the bannings, Terminate and Combust seem better. I want to test mono red with Mardu Scout and upping the Caverns, but I also want to try RB with Terminate/Rain of Gore/Spike Jester.

Well my build did not run Goblin Grenades and Chalice for 1 screws most decks, but if I have Caverns out it doesnt affect me and wouldnt affect Denizen Smile Also Chalice for 0 can hurt Affinity and Living End.

Nice report, two things though. One Master of Waves, is the one you are thinking, so having dismember is a good idea which i am putting in against goyfs in my BR gobo deck. Good job to you sir. Second, Obelisk of Urd is a very interesting idea. This has never been brought to the table as far as testing goes. It seems more of a sideboard card to be honest but i will be testing this in the future, so thank you for bringing something new in here. I'm starting to feel gobo grenade is almost a staple in every goblin deck. The card does so much for so little. Now, it is better in a token version, but at the same time, i feel that if i had to sac a warchief to win the game, i wouldn't care in the slightest.

Instigator is good in a vial version because you are bringing out siege commanders etc etc. It's also way better for legacy gobos(piledriver, matron, ring leader, kiki), modern hasn't really found a place for it yet.

Either way good job on the report and i will start testing that artifact soon.

Thank you Frankx13. I will probably try and put the grenades back in to some degree and continue with my Obelisk testing. I would play it asap when I drew it, no one was packing answers to a 6 drop artifact.

I am anxious to report my Monday modern event result later today when I get off work! Posting this via cell now.

    2-0 vs abzan
    2-1 vs URW delver
    0-2 vs rg from
    2-1 vs merfolk

    Details to come.

Ok so I will start with my chaotic list that I am going to tinker with before next monday (finally found a store that consistently plays modern events on scheduled days.

Ok some explanation of rounds as I recall them..
    Round 1
    2-0 vs abzan
Game 1 - I was on the play, started with T1 Goblin Guide. T2 I play Wardriver, he Decays it on my T3. I play War Marshal, he follows up with liliana of the viel, I sack the marshal. He plays a goyf then I dismember it. Eventually just over run with bushwhackers and tokens.
Game 2 - Only SB was -1 Instigator +1 Rain of Gore (incase there was kitchen finks etc)
He aggressively dealt 5 damage to himself early for fetch into shock for thoughtsieze and I was EEK! - he plays a goyf that was terminated. He played a rhino. I massed a couple turns into an obelisk and again over ran.
*He showed me he had drown in sorrow that obelisk protected me from.

    Round 2
    2v1 vs delver
Game 1- I killed delver with a fanatic first chance. Over ran him with goblins including legion loyalist.
    Game 2- SB I think was +2 Chalice +2 Relic -2 Bolt -2 Dismember
He dropped a staticaster on my T3 that sealed game for him lol.
Game 3- SB -2 Chalice +2 Bolt (regretted not having removal)
T3 Had feeling he had Izzet Staticaster in hand again, thankfully he waited until my turn and I was able to convoke my obelisk and he flashed her in to kill 2 legion loyalist in response but damage was done. The lowly 1/1s were coming in as 3/3s now. Then came a chieftain and rabblemaster.
*Again obelisk was such a game changer for me

    Round 3
    0-2 vs RG Tron
Game 1- I kept a meh hand on play, didnt pan out and wasnt sure what I was up against. He had turn 3 tron without even using a land tutor.
    Game 2- SB -3 Instigators +3 Smash -2 bolt +2 chalice
Guess I didnt mulligan enough, had an aggressive hand vs any other deck, but he was able to pyroclasm t2 to wipe my field into t3 tron again without land tutor. I havent been owned by tron in awhile, consistently own that deck at my lgs, though that was with a previous build using goblin grenades and simian spirit guides...but even still I typically never seen them get tron on T3 without using a tutor for one of pieces and this guy did it back to back...I asked him does that happen often after the match probably in a salty tone lol I resisted any further accusations, but I will make sure to shuffle his deck next time rather than just cut like I typically do. He said that was not normal for him. I also may put blood moon in the side, definately will be making changes.

    Round 4
    2-1 vs merfolk
Game 1- Was able to be aggressive enough and remove some of creatures to secure early win on the play.
    Game 2- SB +2 Combust +2 Engineered -2 dismember -2 instigator
He just over ran the board faster than me, didnt even use vial that game, also he had that creature out that countered spells/abilities that targeted his creatures which made bolt in my hand dead.
Game 3- +1 dismember (remembered they have that pro red merfolk) -1 terminate
This was the most fun match I had in awhile. I got in like 10 damage early on before his board started to get to big to attack in. I drop an obelisk but his merfolk are like 4/4s at that time, but he cant quite attack in since I could block enough to live and kill him on counter swing lol. I think I played all my war marshals. I had like 10 goblins on the field and he had like 7 merfolk, most were lords. It was draw pass for few turns, he was looking for enchantment to make me an island for islandwalk, I was looking for a removal or another goblin to give me enough to attack lethal even if he had a vapor snag in hand. I eventually get there, we were laughing at the suspense. Almost felt like an EDH match Smile

    1. I found myself not really impressed with instigator, mostly because he never had opportunity to 'go off' and put like a cheiftain and krenko into play for example. One time he hit he put in a war marshal in for free and thats all I had lol.
    2. I found myself missing the swingyness of goblin grenades a couple times, but that doesnt synergize well with my obelisk plan that I was impressed with as a surprise tech.
    3. I will come back later, I need sleep Smile

Well I went to a gaming store in raleigh yesterday since I was in the area and they were doing modern...It didnt go as well for me as my previous two FNMs...Only change I have made since then was -4 fanatics +4 rabblemasters to give them a try.

Round 1: vs white aggro? 1-2
Game 1 I was on play but didnt keep the best hand. First strikers put up a bit of a road block and I got overran sadly lol.
Game 2 I kept a more aggressive hand and I won
Game 3 His sideboard gave it to him also was surprised by a morph card that was bounced and turned into an akroma lol.

Round 2: BYE =/ worse than a loss, no playtest

    Round 3: vs R/B reanimate? 2-0
Game 1 He reanimated Griselbrandand exiled it at end step but he couldnt keep up with the damage race
Game 2 He dropped leyline of sanctity Turn 0 I guess to counter lightning bolt/goblin grenade (I did have 2 grenades in hand) but I also ended dropping a turn 2 rabble master into turn 3 chieftain so.

Round 4: vs URW Delver 1-2
Game 1 I got him down to 1-2 life but he came back with helix and snap helix.
Game 2 I had turn 1 double goblin guide with burn, I win though he did draw like 4 lands of them lol
Game 3 He played turn 2 Blind Obedience and well that just wrecked my game, he also fetched basics incase I had blood moon, which I didnt bother with.

I think I am going to try and RG goblin build for destructive revelry in sideboard and ghor-clan rampager in main which I am thinking of replacing grenades for...my thought is even though I have won games with goblin grenade, sometimes it isnt worth hurting my board state and rampager would push through damage even through first strikers...and most people seem to use removal if they have it before my attack step to prevent any triggers on my side. Having answers to enchantments I think may be more important that benefits of black. Will post updates.

This guy used those in his list...along with burning-tree emissary. Its dated. I didnt care of his list. Maybe could be looked at.

I have 2 questions about Modern Goblins:

    1) Does this deck have the ability to beat combo decks like Twin/Storm?

    2) Do Goblin players derive pleasure from the fact that in Bant Midrange I run a single Tivadar of Thorn just in case?

I have not had a problem at all vs twin. I haven’t played vs storm at my LGS yet. I would not be worried about a 3 drop bump in the road personally.
    Quote from Blipblop »
I play a lot against storm and twin. Goblin has the chance to beat these decks. Sideboard helps. You should run tormod's crypt against storm and dismember + spellskite against twin. Now that I'm playing black I could think at some other things to side against them: for example I would like to try the black pact against twin. However, I won against twin and storm several times with my mono red build. It's not a terrible matchup.
Martyr is probably the worst marchup for goblins. Just give up on this thing, we don't have a chance against them. It isn't a very popular deck however. If you want to try something in your sideboard you already received some good advices from the other users. I personally add my own suggestion, which was not mentioned: Rain of gore if you're playing black. However, I don't think that filling your sideboard with cards that you will use only against martyr could be a wise choice...
This weekend I reached the finals of a GP trial at my local gamestore. Then i dropped in the final match because I can't go to Milan, so i traded the byes for the first prize with my opponent. We were 16 players and there was 5 turns of swiss and then top 4. I won against Mono green devotion, another goblin, Jeskay ascendancy and UR delver; drew with Tarmo twin and lost to another tarmo twin. The final match was again against tarmo twin, but, as I said, we didn't play.
The deck performed well and I think I will keep the list as it is right now. The only thing I will change are the Rakdos charm. I don't like them. Against twin dismember is simply better and it could work in other matchups too; against affinity Shattering spree is simply better. This simply because they cost 1 and not 2. This is really important IMHO.

Just wanted to say my fav sb vs twin would be Combust and Torpor Orb. I agree that it isn’t a terrible matchup. Ive actually never lost vs twin at my lgs. I like rain of gore as it really owns some spells but it doesn’t stop lifelink like the other options. Grats on the gp trial.

I like the 4 smash to smithereens, I pull them in vs Affinity, Top control, and Tron for examples. What is it that makes it difficult for you to race them? I feel like its a close matchup pre sideboard and gets better after for me. Also, the card disadvantage is no biggy to me if I win on turn 3-4. I have mulligan down to 5 cards on the play before and won turn 3. Card advantage is blues plan, not mine Smile

I don't know for sure, but I guess my biggest problems when playing against affi were T2 Ensoul Artifact on Darksteel Citadel or just Etched Champion, when he was bale to block my guys, kill a key one, and cast T3 Whipflare. And that's when Spree is handy. And maybe I was exaggerating about affinity being a difficult matchup, sometimes I manage to beat it even before hate cards get in, but more often I lose the first game. And then I want to make sure I have decent chances to win the others, and I would rather kill two of his key permanents instead of one and dealing 3 body damage.
Also, I would like to try SSG sometime, but it just seems so all-inish (even for this deck), if I imagine i mulli to 6, play Mountain, SSG, two one drops and have two crads left in my hand... Drawing into two mountains would be fatal. But as I said, I have no experience with that build. How many lands do you run in it?

Gotcha. Yea Ensoul on Darksteel Citadel has only a few answers (dismember, spellskite in play before, and ratchet bomb I can think of for me). Etched Champion can also be a problem, but if he is back to block then he isn’t attacking. I feel like we should be able to swarm over champion. Now the whipflare IS something that can be game breaking just as pryoclasm. I mean if they had all those that is a pretty nut hand to me, so I can imagine a nut hand for myself that could handle maybe. Spree wouldn’t really help in that situation though, least a smash would deal 3 damage.
I run 20 lands currently and 4 SSG. I need to hit my 2nd land drop and prefer 3rd and don’t even mind 4th sometimes with my build, specially if im up vs merfolk and they are turning them into islands. I honestly have not had an issue flooding out though, maybe one game. That hand you mentioned actually could be pretty boss depending on what the one drops were and 2 other cards in hand…lets say you played 2 goblin guides turn 1 = 4dmg. Turn 2 you drop second mountain and play a bushwhacker kicked = 8dmg/12dmg total at turn 2…turn 3 you drop 3rd mountain and chieftain.
If you are running the war marshals and bushwhackers as the main 2 drops then ssg may not be the best for your build. I run wardrivers and instigators in mine that I love to play on turn 1. So I definitely think it depends on the build.

    Thank you for your response.

I've been having moderate success with the following decklist that I netdecked off the first page of this thread. Obviously, I should perhaps adjust my sideboard to my meta. I'd also like to put some Blood Moons in there, either MB or SB but not quite sure what to cut. Thanks again!

I assume the 2 combust and 2 forked bolt come in from SB? Maybe dismembers? I havent really played vs soul sisters from either of my LGS. My list is different from yours. I would bring in a torpor orb from my sideboard. I wouldnt recommend torpor orb for your sb though since it would hurt your denizens and war marshals. Other options would be skullcrack which was mentioned, leyline of punishment or everlasting torment though never pull this in vs Melira, Sylvok Outcast lol.

Is there something specific that you feel dominates you from that deck other than the life gain?

    Quote from Ragatorm »
Why everyone runs 4xSmash to Smithereens only? Against Affinity, as I found it to be a difficult matchup, I usually side in 2x Smash and 3x Shattering spree. Spree is not instant speed, but wroks great when topdecked. Last monday i casted it for 5 when I ran out of gas in turn 6 after playing Smash, Goblin Guide, Chieftain and some token generator i believe.

Also, till now I was running 4x Mogg War marshal and 2x Dragon fodder, and I decided to také Fodders out for Goblin Wardrivers. I am playing SSG-less build, as I think it's not worth the card disadvantage, but I hope wardrivers will do just fine.

Hi everybody. After having some success in standard with aggro decks and having interest in Goblins due to their lore, I'd like to try the modern deck. I've proxy'd it against a friend of mine who plays a soul sisters deck. She obliterated me time and time again. Is that characteristic of the matchup, my lack of skill, or the fact that soul sisters is a tier deck? Or a combination of the above? How do Goblin decks fare in semi-competitive FNM areas?

Well first of all to answer I would need to know what list you were playing, including sideboard Smile
I play in competitive FNM stores and do pretty well I think. If you find life gain decks an issue there are several sideboard options available.

The only real problem of losing life in modern is Scapeshift. If you go to 18 life you give them the chance to combo out a turn sooner. I talked to a scapeshift player that said to me that scapeshift players very often rely on the life loss of their opponents. It makes their life really easier. Like scapeshift against zoo is an easy matchup for scapeshift....

However, goblin is so damned fast that against scapeshift you could win on turn 4 without any problems and the life loss won't be a problem for you. However the advantage you gain in a mono red build is really low. I would run Bloodstained mire in a RB version, but not in mono red.

Still I'm not really convinced on Simian Spirit guide. Ok, we are an all in deck, but SSG is too all in IMHO Smile it makes me think that it will work in a perfect hand, but most of the times it will be only a bad draw. However I will make some playtesting with SSG.

On token generators, I would not discard them so easily. They work like a 2 for 1 in our favor against spot removals. I don't remember who said that electrolyze is strong against token generators. If they destroy two of our tokens with it we have lost just one card. If you played Spike jester on turn two instead of a token generator electrolyze hurts a lot more...

It may have been referring to electrolyze vs my slowly setup denizens, but I mentioned Izzet Staticaster as well. Also I dont think I agree that spike jester is worse than 2 tokens. I have playtested SSG enough to love it. It helps allow possible turn 3 and 4 wins. Yes I have cast that 2/2 Ape on occasion if I draw into it and already have 3 lands in play...and that Ape benefits from Wardriver and kicked Bushwhacker all the same Smile
