Hi all, just wondering for the people who have been running jace, why jace? If its for the card draw, why not serum visions or shadow of doubt? Curious to hear the reaosnings, cheers

Couple reasons. Jace is repeatable card advantage, and is the only form of it available to the deck. It also absorbs cards from the opponent. Let's say I'm playing against UWR Control. I have them tapped out, so I'm free to play my draw spell. Serum Visions would draw me a card and let me scry. Jace, on the other hand, still draws me the card, but will also do one of three things: Eat a spell from my opponents hand, draw me another card, or force my opponent to burn multiple resources and mana to attempt to clear it out. This holds true even for matchups such as aggro. Not nearly as potent there, but if I can +2 him, not only does he draw me a card, he eats damage effectively and more than likely a card from my opponents hand. He's a very versatile and very underrated card. Serum Visions in my mind is unplayable in the deck, primarily due to being a sorcery, but also because it is simply a low-tier draw spell that has been forced onto the format with the loss of better options.

Here's what I'll be taking next weekend for the most part.

    Couple notes.

Currently I have +1 Batterskull, -1 Mistbind in the main. I've seen it 10 times in games tested (not counting mulligans) and won 6 of those. 2 of the losses it didn't matter which I saw, at least 3 of the wins were only possible with the Skull. None were lost from having Skull but not Mistbind. I'll continue to test it, but for now, I'm satisfied with it.

Current removal suite is what I'm most comfortable with, but it changes daily. I'm pretty set on the Devour Flesh, but the other 2 mana kill spell rotates daily. I think Doom Blade has a better all-around ability than Agony Warp, and it's less of a constraint on mana. 1 Spell Snare is in the main as a catch-all, but I couldn't fault someone for playing 2. I prefer removal or action in the second slot.

Mana base is where I want it, swamp might go out for another Island. Definitely notice a difference between 25 lands v 26 lands, but I needed the extra spell slot.

Sideboard is current, but in 24 hours will probably be completely different. Only guaranteed spots are at least 2 Deathmark, 2 EE, 2 Grafdiggers.

Eyron, do you have the latest version of your list available? Your record looks pretty good.

I'll post it tonight when i get off work. right now I'm trying out a list from a modo player who has been doing well, with a few small tweaks, and I'm liking it a lot. probably going to be my final list for the grand prix outside of removal piece changes and a couple sideboard slots.

I messed around with it when I needed relaxing today. Honestly SSS is the worst card in the deck by far, but overall it has a much more controlling feel about it than UB. Plays a lot like UW Control, but you have Bitterblossom and good point removal. Don't think it's competitive though, at least not currently.

Udrew your problem is that you are personally invested in a particular strategy. This is something I know a lot about, my decks are like my pets. There is nothing wrong with being personally invested in a strat UNLESS that attachment starts to impair your ability to consider new ideas or approaches. Don't get me wrong, some ideas need to be considered and rejected, but you always need to take the time to consider them. When you make statements like "your local tourneys hold the same relevance as MTGO Dailys" you undermine your own credibility. It shows you know nothing about his local tourney and nothing about the trends set by MTGO. Just because UB Fae isn't being played on MTGO doesn't mean MTGO is irrelevant.

Now, the question about Grixis is really a question about how much Zoo do you expect to face. If the answer is "a ton", Grixis hold a lot of answers for you. A grixis fae list could be adapted to have enough board control through Terminate and Bolt to drag a zoo deck into the late game, where you can pummel them without impunity. Yes, life totals are a concern but this is not an insurmountable problem.

However, if Zoo stays hidden in its cave licking its wounds after the last PT Valencia fiasco, you can probably get away with UB fae. Without the need to react to Zoo's fast clock, you can devote more resources to your high value Fae card interactions.

You see, I am not trying to shove Grixis down your throat. I am just showing you that there are different options for different situations.

I'm not personally attached to Faeries. 8 people contest on daily MTGO (winning or losing it) are statistically irrelevant, indeed you can have a glance but you need bigger numbers. I would really like to see a solid URB list vs Zoo. Anyway I'm expecting a totally different meta right now, so I created some innovative sample TEMPO abusing version (totally wrecking all the non aggro decks):
    4bitterbslossom
    4spellstutter sprite
    3vendilion clique
    4mistbind clique
    3snapcaster mage

    4serum vision
    3vapor snag
    4remand
    4cryptic command
    2spell snare
    1dismember

    Sideboard:
    3deathmark
    3hurkyll's recall
    3thoughtseize
    2relic of progenitus
    2devour flesh
    1negate
    1batterskull

Shoving 4 Serum Visions into the deck is innovative?

Man I seriously asked to see his decklist cause I wanna test it (maybe I'm missing something) otherwise I would have been like you said. When there are datas, you should analyze it in order to be sure there aren't hidden errors, or wrong applications; that is how an analytical approach produces its benefit, with a strictly and sharp mindset. In the meanwhile there are still people saying "oh there's too much hostility","I don't like it","it's not my playstyle". This is just about improving the deck, nothing related to each person.
White has strong sideboard cards too like stony silence, runed halo (bye bye storm and bogle), ethersworn canonist, timely reinforcements, gideon jura (infect), kataki, rest in peace. Also an easy land to add in seachrome coast.

I literally named no one. Nor will I. But the overall vibe of our thread is *****e right now. It's one thing to yell at someone for saying "lelfairiessux". But overall we need to be a better community, or we're another useless online board.

Literally the only reason I would even think of a white splash is because Rev gives us both card draw and lifegain, and Path is overall one of the most powerful spells in modern. I sincerely doubt it is competitively viable right now, particularly without the right fetches, but maybe I'll mess around with it. The deck definitely can't accomodate Spellstutter, but Mistbind, Vendilion Clique, and Bitterblossom all seem particularly good, especially if you can go valuetown with Mistbind and Resto. Green IS doable if you do it properly in this format, but as of this moment in time I don't think it gives enough to forfeit the consistency of the deck. And Grixis in my opinion is easily the worst splash idea, as all it gives is Bolt in the maindeck and a few sideboard cards, and bolt alone is not worth it.

On a different note, something about the idea of toying around with an Esper list is growing with me. Path, Resto, and Rev are all nice. But all I can think about is the dream of Bitterblossom+Ephara.

This thread is quite literally devolving in front of my eyes. Gotta love 1 or 2 people smashing people for providing data. It's one thing to go after someone for being over-opinionated and snooty, quite another to do it because you think you know more than everyone else. Rather sad to see.

I'll just say this on the swords discussion: protection has never been relevant for them. It is INCREDIBLY situational, and should be looked at as a bonus. You play a sword for the two additional abilities it gives you. Discussions shouldn't hinge on pro-colors, they should hinge on "what kind of value do I want to get from this."

Weren't you the one who was advocating Swan Song?

I still do like Swan Song, but look at what I said. Every deck Swan Song is good against, wasn't there outside of one Pyromancer's Ascension deck. If I KNOW what I'm going to play against, I'll change my board accordingly. Swan Song is still something I like, just not in a mass-aggro meta.

Did another GPT today to help out friends. Sleeved up the following, with the knowledge that the room was heavily filled with aggressive decks (20 people, one UWR Control, one Twin, one Storm).

    Round 1 - Infect

Game 1 - See a 1-lander, mull to 6. Have a pair of cards stuck together so I immediately call the judge, who randomizes the cards and puts me down to 5 cards. My own fault, but effectively start in a big hole. Keep a decent hand, and once I hit turn three with a Mutavault and double Spellstutter the game is just over. Counter everything he does and roll through pretty easily.

    Sideboard - +2 Spellskite, +2 Negate, - 1 Mistind, -2 Swords, -1 Snapcaster

Game 2 - Only punt of the day. Open with lands, Spellskite, Doom Blade, Cryptic, game should be over right then and there. He plays a turn 2 Blighted Agent. Instead of doing either of the smart plays (killing it while he is tapped or playing Skite), I decide to be brilliant and try to out-value him. Might of Krosa>Apostles Blessing>Vines of Vastwood>Mutagenic Growth. Literally the dumbest play I've ever made with the deck.

Game 3 - Open with Inquisition, rip his only creature. V-Clique his second creature, kill the third. Not really much of a match, the hand manipulation is too good against him.

    Overall 1-0

Matchup feels pretty decent in Faeries favor. Between kill spells, SSS being a near-hard counter, and hand disruption, the deck should rarely be able to threaten absurd combos unless we misplay.

    Round 2 - UW Merfolk

Game 1 - Mull to 6. Turn 1 Inquisition, revealing four lands and 3 lord of atlantis. Yipee. He winds up playing a t2 Aether Vial which I promptly SSS, but he winds up drawing his fourth Lord of Atlantis and a Merfolk Rejeeray. Skill.

Sideboard - -3 Mana Leak, +1 Damnation, +1 Engineered Explosives

Game 2 - Have a solid start with Bitterblossom, he has a board of 2 Lord of Atlantis, Cursecatcher, Mutavault by turn 4. I get good value out of Snap+Slip here, then next turn Thoughtseize. Double Lord of Atlantis, Path, Master of Waves in hand. Discard the Master, EE the two Lords away while down to 4 life with no cards in either players hands, me with a Faerie token and Creeping Tar Pits. He topdecks a Thassa, and while I try to race, he molds his draws. Wind up getting to him playing a Rejeeray, forcing me to double Spellstutter to try and counter, he plays....Delay. Makes the Rejeeray unblockable and swings through for the win.

    Overall - 1-1

I honestly don't think this matchup is atrocious unless they get nut draws. It shouldn't be often we face down 6/7 lords like that. It isn't a fun or easy matchup, but it definitely isn't unbeatable either.

    Round 3 - Affinity

Game 1 - We both mull, he gets a slower start. Winds up with Steel Overseer, Ornithopter, and Inkmoth being big on turn 4 on the play, but Bitterblossom stalls him out. Wind up getting swings in with V-Clique, and eventually Mistbind EoT/Cryptic and tap his board out to swing in for the final ten points.

    Sideboard - -3 Thoughtseize, -2 Mana Leak, +3 Hurkyl's Recall, +2 Engineered Explosives

Game 2 - He winds up with Ornithopter, Ravager, double Cranial Plating by turn 3/4. Bitterblossom and Spellstutters wind up stalling him out, and I get his Ornithopter off the board a couple turns later. He can't draw creatures, so Blossom holds the fort against a 15 power Ravager while Mutavaults and Tar Pits put in work.

    Overall - 2-1

Round 4 - Mono Green Devotion

Game 1 - Turn 1 Inquisition shows a 1 lander, Arbor Elf keep, with all other action being 3 mana or more. Rip the elf and he winds up drawing blanks for two turns while I get Blossom and Spellstutters on line. Easy scoop when I Mistbind him on t4.

    Sideboard - +2 Spreading Seas, +1 Damnation, +2 Deathmark, - 2 Smother, -2 Spellstutter Sprite, -1 Snapcaster

Game 2 - Mull to 6, t1 Thoughtseize with a V-Clique so keep. Wind up drawing Thoughtseize, Thoughtseize, V-Clique. Even with ripping his hand FIVE TIMES he drops a Primeval Titan on me on t5/6. Rough.

Game 3 - Again t1 discard to slow him down, but this time I have counters and Bitterblossom. I get him deep enough into the game thanks to a Damnation for +4 and a follow-up V Clique/tokens, actually wind up having to Deathmark an Arbor Elf so a top-decked Kessig won't kill me. He draws, shows the Titan off the top, and scoops.

    Overall - 3-1

Match showcased to me just how ridiculous the deck can be. Even after annihilating his hand, he still could do powerful enough things to hurt. It feels like a match in our favor, but definitely not one you can take lightly.

Round 5 - UR Fae (ID)

Top 6 players all draw in since guaranteed in. Top 8 consists of one R/G Tron, one UWR Control, one WR Hatebears, one Big Zoo, one 4C Gifts, one UR Fae, one UB Fae, one UW Merfolk.

Top 8 - Big Zoo (concede)

Get matched against one of my two friends in the top 8 (other is playing my Gifts deck) and concede the match since he needed his byes still and I have mine. He winds up winning the tournament, but a discussion amongst us all had people being very vocal that no one outside the UR Fae player wanted to play against UB Fae, and thought it was their worst matchup in the top 8.

Was nice to get a day in against more aggressive decks, as a lot of recent tournaments have felt more control/combo heavy (and I already know how those go). The only time I felt outclassed today was Merfolk nut draws, but I don't really think it's something we can really avoid unfortunately. If they happen to have 6 Lords in their top 10 cards, then they have it. I would've liked to have had Threads in the board, but friend forgot the ones I was going to borrow, so I didn't get to test them. Also had the Negates in instead of the Grafdiggers I would normally run their, but strangely no Pod in the field, so it wasn't necessary. Swords were still good and pretty deserving of the slot, but I still can't decide which configeration they should be.

In regards to removal, I felt pretty confident with this package. I can't really justify Disfigure over Slip. It would've been relevant in one board state the entire day, but I still don't think it would've changed the outcome of the game, or even truly the line I had to take in the match. I'm liking the six kill spells, and I'm absolutely liking the 4 Tar Pit/3 Mutavault config. It might be better to drop a Tec Edge for the last Tar Pit instead of the Mutavault, but this felt right at the time and it worked well. If the preference is still 3 Tar Pit/4 Mutavault/2 Tec Edge, drop a Cryptic and add in the fourth Mistbind.

No I read the whole thing, you just don't like the conclusions drawn. I'm sorry the strat isn't as good as everyone thought it was going to be (me included) but face facts: its not good enough. Notice how all of the teams didn't even bother playtesting it? Do you think that is a coincidence that a whole bunch of separate groups of professional MTG players all came to the same conclusion?

Hey whatever. I am happy to have you guys play as much of this deck as you like. Here is why.

Just get out of here and come back when you're constructive. Or, my preference, just don't come back at all. Kthnxbye.

Apparently you haven't seen that three of the six Faeries players are 5-2 or better, with the second best game-win percentage of any archetype? I agree with most of what you said other than that point.

Aside from my own selfish desire to see the price of Bitterblossom drop a bit so it's easier for me to get my playset, I'd love to see Faeries do well here. Faeries is my favorite deck in Modern, possibly my favorite deck ever. I just don't think it's arrived at the level of potential it's going to reach yet. I also think it's a largely misunderstood deck that isn't being piloted to 100% efficiency by most who play it.

It be a fearsome beastie to tame.

I don't expect it to Top 8. I want it to, but I don't expect it to happen. Especially not with the other action we're seeing.

As a lifelong Chicago Bears fan, it's a feeling I'm quite familiar with.

I'm a Fae player who is an Eagles fan. You do not know real pain :p

    Quote from Lord Seth

Because I have nothing better to do, I decided to go and calculate the conversion rate for each deck. The percentage listed is the percentage of people playing those decks that made it from Day 1 to Day 2:

    Scapeshift: 92.86%
    Blue Moon: 87.5%
    Merfolk: 87.5%
    Infect: 85.71%
    Living End: 85.71%
    Amulet: 80%
    Hexproof Auras: 75%
    Storm: 75%
    Other: 73.33%
    Kiki-Pod: 70%
    Zoo: 68.75%
    W/U/R Flash: 65.51%
    Melira Pod: 63.64%
    Tron: 62.5%
    W/U Control: 60%
    Affinity: 54.55%
    Twin: 51.11%
    Faeries: 50%
    Burn: 40%
    Jund: 37.04%

My only issue with stats like this (and actually with most stats period coming from something like this) is that it isn't QUITE an accurate reflection of decks. Things such as Scapeshift and Blue Moon are doing absurdly well not only because of their metagame position, but also because of the people playing the deck. When you have the best players in the world on a particular deck, it's going to spike its win percentage.

As far as the stats, the only ones that I'm REALLY surprised about are Merfolk and Storm.
