Hey guys. It's been a while since I posted here. Glad to see the Elf community continues to go strong. I would like to comment on a couple things that will hopefully spark some meaningful discussion.

Firstly it's awesome that Elves placed in a GP yesterday!! They were featured playing against burn which we won by a landslide - no surprise there.

Secondly. Guys.. This is serious. Jace the Mind Sculptor and Bloodbraid Elf have been unbanned. What will this mean for us moving forward? Are we boned with the rise of midrange and control?

Edit: Will Jund Elves be a thing? BBE into Shaman sounds pretty sweet though whiffing on a dork seems more likely. I do like the aggressive nature of going Jund by having another 3/2 body except with haste and the ability to 2 for 1. With coco that's eight 2 for 1s which is great for recovering from boardwipes. We'll also have access to magus of the moon.

Veteran Elves players, based on your experience what are the common mistakes one usually does when playing this deck? It could be for the GB, GW or Abzan build. I'm pretty sure Elf newbies like me can gain a lot from what you can contribute. Could be a general play or something we might do in a certain match up. Thanks in advance to anyone who will share their thoughts Thumbs Up

Sequencing, mulligans, and sideboarding are the three big ones I see new Elf players struggle with.

How can it not be in this deck? Its a mini stampede anyway with archdruid mama. I thinks the right answer here is 2. I mean this is archdruid 5 and 6 with a tad of stampede. Test it and keep it.

    I agree.

One line of play I can see being strong is having 4 Elves on the field, cast this and grab Ezuri. It flips on your EOT. On your next turn play a land, play ezuri and overrun with new cradle.

TL;DR This card has the potential to both grab Ezuri and give you the mana you need to overrun the following turn.

Gaea's cradle can be played as 4 because it's an immediate impact that lets you create insane amounts of mana in one turn for lethal. Also, it's a land off the bat which doesn't take slots from chord/CoCo or creatures.

That being said, I feel like a case can be made for 2. For GW combo I think -1 land and -1 chord could work. It's been proven via Ross Merriam - though not intentional - that 17 lands is consistent with this version. 9 noncreature spells is the max I would personally go.

I personally am excited to begin testing Modern's gaea's cradle.

Here's what I can tell so far.

1)It's a noncreature spell meaning less CoCo targets but it adds a creature to your hand giving the deck more reach for wincons.

2)It's legendary so more than 2 doesn't seem like a good idea.

3)In the face of removal it will be difficult to trigger its ability.

    4)Craterhoof for more mana sinks?

5)4 Ezuri seems like a must with it for more chances to use the land's mana output.

6)Too clunky in GB; more potential in GW.

7)Can be played and activated t2 with the god hand though t3 activation seems more likely.

    8)Forces you to over-commit.

    9)Good top deck.

Seems to me that GW combo benefits the most by having more wincons to fetch including 4 ezuri.

Are there any better alternatives to Kitchen Finks for burn matchups in a GB build? Essence Warden? Life Goes On? Finks typically only nets me 2 life which doesn't seem worth it.

If you run GW there's Lone Missionary. Comes down a turn earlier, nets 4 life off the bat, and has enough power to trade with their creatures.

    @Planeswalkers:
I'd like to give my 2 cents on the topic of planeswalkers. Let's start with Garruk Relentless. He's strong and I like all of his modes in our deck but coming in with 3 counters with no way to uptick that same turn you cast him keeps him in bolt range. He seems especially dead against jeskai control which runs 4 bolts, 4 helix, and 4 snaps. If we want a walker that can tackle all of our control/midrange MUs then it should really pass the bolt check imo.

Nissa, Vital force is a great card and it passes the bolt test but 5 mana can be difficult to achieve after a board wipe. Yes there's the chance we could predict the board wipe and be proactive with Nissa but what if you don't have it in your hand and you draw into it.

If we take both cmc and bolt test into consideration, we're left with Garruk Wildspeaker and Nissa, Voice of Zendikar.

Any advice facing against Valakut deck variants? How favorable is it for Elves? I'm running a typical Abzan build. I have access to Mark of Asylum and Burrenton Forge-tender

What makes this MU so bad for us is we have to both race and play around their angers and bolts. You have to pay very close attention to how many turns away they are from winning. Knowing this, think about how many pieces you need to commit in one turn to counterplay their boardwipe while still providing a clock. It's difficult but doable.

All those hate pcs MasterBouda mentioned will work fine except Gaddock Teeg. It only hits noncreature spells (primeval can still be played) and it conflicts with chord/company.

In my experience, Forgetender/Spirit and Aven are the most effective with our company/chord suite.
In my abzan toolbox list I use sculler as a means to combat this MU and other combo MUs.

I'm wondering about Lone Missionary as a replacement for Finks against burn/zoo.

I realize Finks potential strengths but it has 3 potential weaknesses in my experience. Firstly, postboard your opponent will bring in Grafdigger's without a doubt which makes an already good card against us even better. Secondly, Path converts Finks into a very average creature. Thirdly, it's a three drop which has the possibility of not coming out until T4 if you miss a land drop and they're killing your dorks - it happens.

The reasons why I like Lone are because it gives you 4 life off the bat, it's a t2 play, and its 2 power body is nice against Burn/Zoo's creatures save Nacatl. Lastly it's much easier to chord for in a pinch.

My question to you guys is, does Finks' potential strengths overshadow its potential weaknesses when comparing to Lone Missionary as a replacement?

On a different note, I would like to continue the discussion of Gavony Township.

    Activation:
If you're running any type of white noncreature spell in the sideboard it's because you have enough white sources to cast them and activate Gavony. Lastly, paying 4 mana in Elves is extremely achievable as early as T3.

    MUs:
It's relatively bad against decks you need to race such as Hyperaggro, creatureless combo, and creature combo. It shines in slow games and against decks packed with removal.

    Comparing to Counters Company:
The reason why it's good in Counters Company (formerly Abzan Company) is because, like us, they flood the board quickly with dorks and company. With Gavony, these dorks become an eventual threat that forces your opponent to react to a 3/3 Elvish Visionary which screams value. There are reasons why it's better in Counters Company such as synergy with Finks/Redcap and better grind potential but these aren't good enough to say the card is bad in Elves.

As always, thanks for reading and let me know what you think!

On a different note, you guys have me on the eldrazi hype train now. I've been testing the following list with great success through cockatrice.

The Fauna Shaman is a flex spot I'm testing out; I couldn't find a better 2cmc Elf that perfects my curve. 11 Sources of white and 11 sources of colorless ensures I never have a problem with mana. Overall I'm pretty happy with the list, I'm tempted to take it to Cash Modern Monday to test it out.

Edit: Wastes is actually 3rd forest.

That's hot! I haven't been able to play Elves in a while. Really getting me pumped for my next trip to the LGS!
    !

Glad you like it because I'm actually taking it to a PPTQ this Saturday. I hope you''ll have good results on your end!

In case you're wondering, I made some alterations. Feel free to give me your opinion!

    MB:
    -1 Fauna, +1 Revoker
Fauna always been too cute for modern. Especially now with so much discard in my meta.
Revoker gives me some percentage points against equally fast decks like the mirror, devoted combo, affinity, etc

    -1 Razorverge, +1 Canopy
I thought I'd be pinging myself more often with Brushland but that's seldom the case. Naturally I can fit in a 4th canopy for this reason!

    SB:
    -1 Revoker, +1 Finks
Revoker moved to MB. Burn and Zoo have been coming up in my meta so I need a little edge.

    -2 Relic, +2 Finks
Relics have been unnecessary against anything that's not Dredge or Living End. Between TKS, Eidolon, and Scooze I feel like my Living End postboard plan is more than enough. I'm only afraid of Dredge now because it's such a bad MU but my strategy is to dodge it. Luckily for me neither of these decks have appeared in my meta recently because they've fallen out of favor.

    Other thoughts:
The deck can get a little grindy with TKS and I've ran into situations where my dorks just sit back and let TKS swing. I'm thinking about Gavony Township as another means to pump up my team when there's a boardstall. It seems plausible now with 11 dorks and TKS eliminating imminent threats.

Lastly, I need Pendelhaven to fit somewhere. I'm wondering if I should be greedy and remove a forest.

You use the infinite mana to trigger Ezuri infinitely boosting your creatures with trample

Is that really necessary to give it infinite trigger? Seems like a winmore to me. Usually after 1 activation it's enough to get the kill.

There will be many situations where infinite will close out the game sooner than 1 activation. Here's why.

The difference between combo (infinite) and no combo (1 activation) is winning 1-2 turns earlier. Devoted druid can win T3 and only requires itself to attack for infinite damage whereas without the combo you'd have to spend a whole turn developing a board presence. On top of that you'd also need archdruid or enough dorks/land to activate Ezuri and still have enough power on the board for lethal.

As VIPowl mentioned, check out Martin Juza's list from GP Copenhagen of this year. If you have any questions, feel free to lay them on me. I actually took the same list - give or take a few tweaks - to GP Vegas and learned A LOT.

Seeing a lot of talk about thought knot brewing. It's definitely a good card, but what exactly are we attempting to do with it? Are we using it to disrupt potential sweepers or combo? That seems to be the main "weakness" it could help with? If that's the case, does it come down quick enough to accomplish that? Turn 3 on the play may work, but turn 3 on the draw would likely be to late to stop a sweeper or combo card in many scenarios, especially post board where people are mulliganing into their sideboard cards.

Perhaps just some ignorance on my part, just curious what void people see this card filling in the deck.

Doesn't seem like something we'd want to Chord for, isn't an elf, and can't Company into it. Those seem like three pretty large strikes for a deck that assumes much of its power from synergy amongst those cards. Especially if we're going to be jamming 3-4 of them main. Admittedly I haven't play tested the card and am intrigued, hoping for some knowledge here.

I agree entirely here. I think the space is much better filled with other things, particularly selfless spirits, rec sages, etc... (other sideboard cards in mainboard slots for game 1 utility)

I played tks to a top 8 finish. Basically, I used it to fight anger, bolts and the two decks we have a hard time with: shapeshifter variant and tron. It can also come against control, burn and creatureless combo. I put them in the sideboard and used them in tandem with discard. Now I am exploring options with counterspell. What it basically does is give us a transformational sideboard.

Not 100% convinced, but it worked before foe me, so now I'm trying it with UG.

Thanks for the info! I'm GB and on the thoughtseize plan to fight sweepers and combo. Sometimes it's good enough but having that extra info and disruption is what peaked my interest. The casting cost and potential lack of synergy are what keep giving me pause.

Highly interested in the counterspell idea. Seems like splashing for that could be good to protect our "combo", similar to how spell spierce worked for infect.

Going three color seems optimal (either GWU or GBU), wondering if blue has enough impactful cards to make straight GU an option. Phantasmal image, Spell Pierce, Dispel, Spreading Seas, Nissa, Hurkyl's Recall, Ceremonious Rejection, Swan Song, heck even Kira, Great Glass Spinner are cards that come to mind if we went straight GU. GU would seem to be on the "hold for the alpha strike with Ezuri plan with counter backup". I enjoy Shaman so much I'm not sure I could do it, just throwing ideas out there.

You could use Coiling Oracle instead of Elvish Visionary OMG it's good. But Shaman of the Pack is too strong, I can't play without him <3

There are a couple of people on here that run a Sultai list with success. I believe they came to the conclusion that Oracle is not worth running over Visionary.

Two Elf lists appeared in the top 16 of the SCG Modern Classic. One was Monogreen - surprisingly - and the other was BG.

Here I was hoping we'd stay under the radar and remain hidden op.

Guys, do you think it's good if I play with shocks-fetches + 1x Scryb Ranger + 1x Dryad Arbor, all in mainboard

And, wich one is better Lead the stampede or Eldritch evolution ???

There's too much removal in the meta for Arbor and scryb ranger to be good imo. Here are other reasons why they're not optimal in Company Elves. Arbor is a land and since we run a low land count we often need each land we get - unless we get mana flooded of course. Scryb Ranger is much slower than its legacy counter part and you'll end up wishing it's something else instead. You should definitely test it though, maybe you'll have some success.

My link should be below my signature. I ran them for a top 8 finish.

Good questions and very good analysis. In short, I think GB's mana base is clunky, if you are trying to run them down with Ezuri or dump your hand as fast as possible. The interesting thing I find is that GBs game plan is not primarily trying to dump enough dudes to go wide, but to chip away with Shaman damage. Thus, elfballing is more difficult with GB, but our game plan is not trying to Elfball all the time, but to switch from elfballing to beatdown. An example would be playing shaman when you only have two dudes on board. In the case with GW, you would want to go wide and drop many creatures with the mana dorks, but the thing that makes GB unique is its ability to shift focus to a Shaman chip and beatdown. This makes elfballing and consequently Ezuri over-run as one of the ways to win and not the way to win. That's where the beauty and versatility of GB comes into play.

In terms of GW winning or placing top 8 lists, I believe that is primarily in the American metagame. Ever since Shaman was spoiled, GB has been piloted to good finishes here in Japan. I think, maybe, culture plays a big roll in people's preferences in playstyle. An example would be when the Vizier combo was released into the metagame. America was all over the combo and fitting them into Elves, but here in Japan, it simply experimented and I don't find many players who fully embraced it. Of course, that could be my metagame here near Osaka.

I see your list now, thanks. I normally post from my phone and signatures are not seen through it which explains why I never saw it before.

It's a very impressive finish. I especially love the idea of 4 TKS and 3 TS against combo and control. I do have a few questions though. How do you fit TKS + TS in with 4 Shaman? In postboard do you remove chords + companies to make room or do you just forget about the curve and/or the non-elf to elf ratio?

I get what you're trying to say about GB considering I play it myself - recently went one week with 6 top 4 finishes in a row at different LGS'. Though I believe to have gotten lucky that week due to optimal matchups. To further explain, I've played through GB's slower but effective approach and I can safely say it's at a disadvantage when against fast decks.

I could see the combination of TS and TKS solving this problem but again, the curve seems problematic on paper.

I believe TKS' biggest strength is that it hits a broad meta. Most importantly, it disrupts decks that are almost guaranteed to cripple our strategy.

Yes it can't be played off company and most of the time you'd probably want to chord an ezuri; however, against those decks that are built to hate us, chording a TKS is not a bad play. Information is power and removing a key card is also power.

I'm with Mikeduges on not being 100% convinced but I have seen its potential. Tbh it's been particularly consistent for me in my GW shell. I would love to see it played alongside TS if Mikeduges convinces me enough =).

Ultimately I'd say try it out and form your own opinion. Have fun!

Abzan with displacers seems good on paper with Shaman, Visionary, and Dwynen's as etb targets; however, adding colorless will make GB/Abzan even more clunky given GB is already known for that.

I think TKS' best home is in a non-Gbx shell. Unless you take out shamans then maybe it can work with TS coming in from the side for more hand hate. The combination of both seems like a great strategy against fast decks (screw you Counters Company) and control.

Am I a madman for even considering GB with no Shaman?

Well, you should check out my scg iq top8 list. I made Shaman and tks work. Although it's only one tournament, it is worth further testing. In my opinion, it wasn't as clunky as it sounds since colorless sources are also gb sources. In essence, pain lands are trim color lands.

Do you have a link? I'm always interested in seeing what people are running.

I think the clunkiness stems from not being able to rely solely on Archdruid, Heritage, Llanowar, or Mystic's mana output. Whether I run eldrazi or shaman, I have to keep a land up to produce their color and this sometimes restricts me from vomiting my hand out. It's not often it happens but when it does happen it makes my plays slower. I actually think that a big reason why GW lists have made it to GP top 8s - unlike GB or GxC - is because their mana base is consistent. Also canopies and White's strong sideboard selection helps.

I do like the thought of GWC for the reasons I mentioned and because Boreal Druid produces Eldrazi's mana and it doesn't ping me unlike Elves of Deep Shadow if I'd want to cast Shaman off of it. This is of course just my 2 cents. I could very well be wrong and see a GBc list in the next GP.

Lastly despite me being critical about Non-Gw lists, I still see their potential. Afterall, my favorite build is GB,
