Oct 15, 2017Sephon19 posted a message on The World of KamigawaPosted in: ArticlesQuote from silasary »The team at the time thought that if they were to print O-Kagachi, they'd need to do so before That Which Was Taken was taken. And O-Kagachi with his Divinity intact would indeed be too powerful.
When the Commander team returned to the character, they had a lot more freedom as to portrayal and timelines, and so chose to portray O-Kagachi after That Which Was Taken was taken.
Hence the 6/6.
I've heard this argument before and it just doesn't hold. The thing is the size of Progenitus - a creature that could arguably be smaller in P/T due to its ability. Why can i tbe taken down by a random Spider? I understand that Magic power scale is somewhat weird sometimes for gameplay reasons, but you just shouldn't make a world-sized creature at 6/6. Especially in a world they cannot retcon at this point, unlike Sergovia. -

May 13, 2015Sephon19 posted a message on High Stakes Magic - A New Way to PlayOk, I think I'm going to start out with 100 cards, percentages are easier to work with that way. I'm going to do a theme of Zombies, Spirits and Infect. Death and decay.Posted in: Articles
Have you tried any of the Theros block hero cards or any utility lands? I'm personally going to use a lot of cards with activation costs so lands are actually possibly usable here. Using a mix of Zendikar block spell lands and a Leechridden Swamp.
Also interesting to see "colors matter" cards, such as normal slam dunks such as creatures with protection or intimidate. When all colors are readily available, it's much easier to answer a White Knight than if you were a normal black deck. -

I'm personally going to make a Peasant auction block and call this format High Market (referring to Mercadia) or something because I personally find the High Stakes name unsexy. I prefer something that has more Vorthosian substance. Infact, after I'm done I'm doing a forum thread with my decklist.
Have you tried the Theros block Hero cards? I'm personally considering inserting a variety of tokens into the deck rather than vanilla creatures since mana costs don't matter anyways (even if I consider adding some devotion cards as well).
EDIT: What about land cards with utility btw? They can provide mana a good bit.
EDITEDIT: I additionally see your auction block is 200 cards. Do you find that the optimal size? - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
EDIT: That said, I happen to agree with your premise. I think hexproof works for green due to genetic resistances, white due to protection magic, blue due to secrecy, and black due to many of its creatures working from the shadows. (IE, it's reasonable for them to be ahrd to hit.) The flavor justification of fire armor is actually really specific and should not be the foundation for a color pie in my opinion. I think though that the only reason white doesn't have hexproof is that it already has damage prevention and protection from monicker so its protection magic is already present in the mechanics and it doesn't really need hexproof as a creature design tool.
What was The Great Keyword War? Any links to any posts in particular? I'm curious.
I like black because I like sacrificing my own stuff and life durdlingly to win
I guess it's another sleeping Johnny sleeper.
Why does one not run a full playset of Mana Blooms? Having multiples with just one Doomwake Giant or one Eidolon of Blossoms seems insane - sometimes it'd be a dud (drawing cards when you need to impact the board) but it still reads so powerful as an engine (the cards you've drawn should help you dig down to the answers)?
I'm considering designing a casual wg control/defensestall deck that of course loses to anything noncreaturebased, but utilizes this, cantrips or draws such as Bequethal, Wall of Omens and Sylvan Caryatid, along with white removal and fliers. G also has a lot of deathtouch which could make Lace with Moonglove and stuff interesting along with this.
I know it's casual jank, but it might be fun to do.
4 Wall of Blossoms
4 Sylvan Caryatid
4 Godsend
4 Taunting Elf
4 Elvish Visionary
4 Sublime Archangel
I know this is a discussion about trample (and probably just trample in constructed), but if you're going into limited green, we're talking about a format where Nessian Asp was first-pickable. Green is that good in Theros limited. Its dense concentration of ramp and monsters is easy to sustain pressure with and similarly easy to support if you splash any other color than white.
I admit that there is a lack of truly powerful Theros block noncreature spells. But I don't think you should despair in particular over it - the Voltron system of Theros limited did infact require spells to be somewhat underpowered compared to creatures. But there's a good chance we will see powerful spells return in the next environment, as I think Limited will be much different. Just look at the spells scattered throughout the rest of the recent sets. There are plenty of gems, you know.
But for this thread in particular, I might concede to your point. I'm more concerned with the general attitude of spell-lovers who rightfully gather that creatures have increased in power. Understand that spells are still quite often quite powerful. Heck, there are consistently chase mythics that aren't creatures called Planeswalkers.
Thoughtseize Printed and reprinted, format warping, after they decided to boost creatures.
Lightning Bolt (Yes, it's a reprint, but it's still the best red spell in the game returning after they decided to boost creatures.)
Mental Misstep, banned. After they decided to boost creatures.
Abrupt Decay Another-Vindicate, after they decided to boost creatures.
And for the current standard format in particular (as in, not sure how eternal-relevant these will be)
Mizzium Mortars
Sphinx's Revelation
Supreme Verdict
Detention Sphere
That was from a really quick search and from-the-top-of-my-head recollection.
As they have repeatingly stated, they aren't exactly powering down spells; they are merely upping creatures to the power level of spells, and keep excruciatingly overpowered spells in check in general.
Sometimes they do actually try to print Eternal viable noncreature enablers such as Torpor Orb and Sundial of the Infinite.
For the latter, this means that your Yawgmoth's Will/Tolarian Academy/Show and Tell/Solitaire.dec cards won't be printed.
And good riddance for that - You'll be fine.
