I don't buy this whole argument of "the turn 4 rule discourages rogue deck building."
You can break any format, regardless of its rules. Isn't that the entire goal of a rogue deck builder? To find a deck that nobody else knows about that can wreck a tournament? And even better if the deck can survive the hate being slung at it in the weeks to come! And if the metagame can't deal with that deck, and it becomes oppressive, and the format doesn't have the cards necessary to deal with it, the deck sees a ban. That's a badge of honor for the rogue deck builder. It shows you're an expert at your craft. Now get out there and try again!
And note that nothing about that previous paragraph is unique to Modern. Modern may have some very controversial rules about how its bans are enforced, but the philosophy is the same. If you genuinely break a format and create a deck that's oppressive and can't be dealt with, it's going to get hit with a ban, regardless of what format you're talking about. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try - if you succeed, wear it with pride! You just did something very few players can actually claim.
I'm not speaking to "bandwagoners" here, of course. I'm not talking to players who read about some turn 2 deck, go out and buy the list straight off of the internet, play it for a while, and then complain when it got banned. If you never contributed to that deck's success and never put any effort into the community to make it better, you're just a lazy netdecker who is whining because being lazy cost you money.
But what if you're not a deck builder, and you're far from lazy - you're a 100% Spike who wants to pick up the deck that gives you the best overall chance of winning? If you're really a Spike, you don't care what style of deck you're playing - you want the deck best positioned for the metagame. That requires studying and understanding what's going on in the format. There's only been one ban in the past 18 months that the community at large didn't see coming, and that was Seething Song. And If you were budget conscious, you knew months ago it was time to sell your Eggs deck and find another Spike-y deck to play.
That's not to say I "like" the Turn 4 rule - I actually don't (at least, not the way it's currently defined - I think there's good intent there but it needs to be refined). That's not to say that I agree with everything on the banned list - I don't. I think there have been some mistakes with the way the banned list has been handled. But I feel like so many people in this thread are making excuses for being lazy and not understanding the format. Even though I don't agree with everything WotC has done, for the most part I understand what they have done. That understanding means that I'm comfortable with my deck selection in the format and where I'm going to be investing in the future.

cjwynes posted a message on [[Official]] [RTR] Running Tally of Highest Priced Cards: Updated 11/20/14At the LGS where I play, all the shocklands were selling quickly at $14-$15 each. The store owner said Temple Garden was in the biggest demand, but our local player base has some weird affinity for G/W decks so that's probably just local variance. At the trade tables, they were like gold, but most people only wanted to trade their lands for other lands. I have to imagine that these will be down to $5 in a few months if we get heavy drafting, right? Hell, they're reprints from a popular expansion, and I know original RAV was drafted heavily on MTGO and I assume on paper as well.Posted in: Market Street Café
Regarding Jace's surge, this reminds me of last year when there was a huge price spike on Liliana on the opening weekend, and SCG was buying them for $50 cash at the Open that weekend. Their buyer seemed to be in total disbelief that he had been told to buy them that high, which amused me to no end. But they knew what they were doing and dumped them all into the hands of desperate players in time for states, at $70 a pop.
Jace may be going through the same thing this time, and the shortage rumors, as well as the fact that it's a Jace and players might be panicking about another out-of-reach Jace, could spike the hell out of that thing. But history would show that it will come back down to earth and be no more than a $30 card by the time Gatecrash releases.
MaRo's article today hinted that they ordered alot of this set printed. So while they may have still shot too low, I gotta believe there will be enough product at the end of the day. Our LGS, like many others, drafts for FNM. There would be a near mutiny of LGS owners if there weren't enough product to draft with, nobody's going to be coming in for core set drafts in November. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

I learned to not mind it so much, as it became an easy litmus test for ignore-able opinions.
