Thanks for the report! I love reports. How has your one of been for you? Why two Aven? Aren't the decks it's good against not prevalent?
I am playing the liege rhino version today at not States because it qualifies with an invitational I qualified for so I'm going to that. If you guys want a report let me know but it will be standard and modern with modern top 8 so it might throw off the report as I can go 3-0 in modern and 0-3 in standard and not top 8 (very confidant and ready for modern scared of standard have not played it in a while).
How did the tournament go for you?
I'm planning on ordering what I need to finish your list tonight, hope to take it to some local tournaments next weekend.
Just wanted to pop in this thread as a former pod player. I'm moving to an area where I can play multiple times a week in paper again so I wanted to get back into paper modern. Really interested in getting the cards I need to finish Emracool's list. Are you still using the same sideboard?
You might want to look into Wilted-Abzan. It's more or less what all the Pod players switched to playing. It's an Abzan deck but instead of playing cards like Goyf and Inquisition they play more creatures like Wilt-Leaf Liege and Voice.
This is a good suggestion.
I would also go to the new tournament scene with whatever you have; for example, BWR, and see if you like it there before dropping a bunch of money into it (since it seems like you're concerned). (This probably goes without saying though.)
Yeah I was considering playing Little Kid Junk but I wasn't sure if it actually stuck around or was just a PT meta deck. I don't actually own Mardu in paper (just played it a lot on MTGO) so I'll probably go the Junk route.
Trying to figure out a deck to play. I'm moving to an area where there are multiple weekly modern tournaments again so I'd like to get involved. Last seriously played Rhino Pod and dabbled w/ Mardu Control on MTGO. I kind of like the look of esper mentor or sultai control, but I'd rather not drop a grand on another deck then find out I hate the stores/community down there.
So I guess I'm being budget-weary just out of practicality not necessity. I do have a full playset of shocks and fetches to use, though.
Maybe I'm just absolutely clueless but I cannot figure out the burn matchup at all. I've even cast a Timely, Ajani and Helix in the same game and just get absolutely stomped.
It doesn't help that like 75% of the online metagame is apparently burn.
I found that the extra mana cost was prohibitive even though I initially started with charms in my list and liked them. Then again I now have uses for worse topdecks lategame with Pat Rack so there's that.
I was thinking if I throw Lili in the deck I might do something like
-2 Sorin
+2 Lili
then in the sideboard perhaps add a 3rd lili and a pair of sowing salts instead of stone rain? I feel like I almost never run Stone Rain. Considering maybe something to hose Souls/Goyf as well, possibly black leyline or RIP or something.
I definitely want to keep testing this deck more. I'll likely end up playing SCG States and possibly run it there.
IMO it's not good in this deck unless you're going heavy tokens. We can run wraths that are bigger and more versatile if you just want it to sweep away tokens.
I kind of want to get a couple of Lilianas to test in place of my Sorins because I feel like they'll do more. But man I don't want to spend $90 on them on MTGO when I can just buy them IRL for that...
Round 1 vs BWu Tokens
Game 1 - I have two IoK, see a 2-land hand and bin two Path to Exile. I see 2 lingering souls and a procession. He gets stuck on two land for a while, I slam a turn 4 Ajani and begin ticking it up. By the time he finds the third land to threaten I have a few souls out protecting him myself. Ajani ult + Anger on the same turn with me still having 3 copies of Souls in my yard seals the game.
Game 2 - I have turn 3 anger into turn 4 ajani but slow-roll my anger a little too long. I misplay with Timely Reinforcements and don't gain the life, then Zealous+Snap+Zealous kills me.
Game 3 - Weird game, we both just kind of play out spirit tokens. I'm able to play a Timely, kill his Sorin after he greedily makes a guy and just slowly overrun him. He was stuck using path on souls tokens a bunch of times. I eventually just got him to no cards in hand, me with tokens in play and both of us topdecking. He killed my guys w/ a zealous but had nothing on board himself, I dropped a Sorin nthe following turn and won.
Round 2 vs Burn
Game 1 - Just get burned out. I drew no lifegain and had to shock myself to turn 1 IoK.
Game 2 - I draw a Timely and a bunch of souls, IoK and get him to burn Skullcrack. He concedes after I cast Timely.
Game 3 - I kept a two-lander and he played a turn 2 goyf followed by turn 3 guide+goyf. Just had nothing to answer it and his guide triggers revealed a pack rat and a blood baron.
Game 1 - He has a janky draw with multiple wraths and an early ghostly prison.
Game 2 - He drew really poorly again having just 3 paths and a planar cleansing he never got to cast. I dropped Lingering Souls/Pack Rat and just slaughtered him.
Sideboard - +2 Wear//Tear, -2 Terminate
Round 4 vs Bogles
Game 1 - Thoughtseized his Spirit Dancer and he had nothing else. Saved Crackling Doom for the last Bogle he tried to armor up and won.
Game 2 - Crackling Doomed his early threat then ticked Ajani up until I ulted. Just burned him out from there and kept a pair of Crackling Dooms in hand to ensure the win.
Sideboard - +2 Wear//Tear, +2 Thoughtseize, -3 Terminate, -1 Anger of the Gods

Appreciate it.
