You have a start on RG aggro or Gr/B/U devotion there. Your best bet it to download Cockatrice, build the decks you're interested in, or that are winning tournaments right now, play them against each other, and then build the one you like. A rotation just happened, so pretty much anything you buy is going to be relevant for standard for a full season and change right now. RDW is the cheapest deck in the format right now, followed by GW aggro.
That being said, if you're a control player by nature, just suck it up, shell out for Esper/UWR/UW control as desired, because you're going to end up there eventually anyway, and this way you're mostly set for the season. The chances of Sphinx's Revelation, Supreme Verdict, Jace, and UWx lands being the core of the deck changing any time soon are pretty slim. Other archetypes are a slightly harder call, but I highly doubt U and B devotion are going anywhere since they are synergistic and consistent. Mono red and Gr Devotion are also pretty good, but their future is less known. If you want to gamble a bit, white devotion isn't really putting up number right now, which means you can get into it on the cheap, and as the card pool expands it may improve a lot.
thanks. I guess my question is should I just keep all my rares, try to trade them for other cards, or trade them in for store credit and just buy the cards I need?
So I haven't played since Mirrodin/Kamigawa and looking to get back into competitive MTG. I sold all my old cards(Chrome Mox, Kokusho, etc.) back then so I literally had zero cards 3 days ago.
So I bought a Theros booster box since it is still fairly new and won't rotate out till 2 years. So what kind of deck should I be looking to build that will last me a long time? The rares I have are below.
Also, I can trade in my cards to card kingdom with the 30% store credit and get $150 in credit(without Thoughtseize), so that gives me a good base to work from.
so how do this deck handle cards like Burning Earth and Skullcrack . It seems with control decks getting popular RDW and Red Devotion is going to become more popular.
how does this deck do against a 5color Gate-Fog Deck? I'm deciding on a Gate Deck or the RDW deck to build to get back into Magic and not sure which one to build.
Chandra is not essential in a budget deck, but a nice option if you have cash to burn.
that was my point, does it improve the deck. Obviously it is super strong, but isn't the point of RDW to win super fast? For 4 mana does it slow the deck down?
this is a fine replacement, although the life gain can be pretty relevant
thanks. One more question, will this deck be viable once return to ravnica cycles out(when is that).
I haven't played competitivly since Mirrodin/Kamigawa so I'm not sure when sets cycle out. It seems like a lot of these cards are Return to Ravnica cards so I don't want to invest in cards that cycle out soon or in a deck that I can only play a few months.
