Apr 12, 2014Tanro posted a message on JOU Digest 2: Cats, Storms and SpearsAjanni's Ultimate is so bad. It does nothing to help you win the game. Whooo 100 life. So what. I guess it would work as a win con in a control deck with elixir of immortality. Still not a win con.Posted in: Articles

But Yeah I did walk to school, it was uphill one way, but we don't often get snow in Alabama.
As for constructive criticism. I did make a suggestion with flicker type effects. That would be the best way to get value from detain. Still highly doubt this would be competitive even in FNM level events because you always get at least 1-2 players with aspirations of getting on the pro tour bringing tier 1 decks to 5$ or Free events. Or you get a random grinder getting ready for a premier event.
Futher Advice I can leave here, would be to include more 4 ofs and less 2 ofs. If the card is very good, and you expect to use it every game, use 4 unless drawing multiples would be bad. Then it is safe to 3x. If you need it sometimes, but don't need it every game 1-2x is fine, especially when drawing multiples are bad. (Planeswalkers, legendaries).
Example would be a stock burn List runs 2x lightning helix, but 4x Lightning Bolt. You wan't to see bolt everytime, as many times as possible. You only want lightning helix when your slightly behind on life.
In this case, I would suggest 4x Lyev Skyknight, and drop Stonehorn Dignitary
I would also suggest moving Aegis of the Gods to the sideboard, and Including 4x Azorius Arrester
Aegis will hedge certain matchups (Burn, Storm, anything playing Hand Disruption) but it has little impact against decks that don't interact with the opponent outside of the combat step.
I would also recommend Replacing Render Silent with 2 cmc Counters such as Remand.
QFT Eidolon can quite literally win the mirror when you see it, and they don't have it, or don't see. So many burn players see it as bad because it hurts them too. But the thing is, in the mirror you can just wait till they burn, or don't. Getting in for 2 each turn until dies will get you a game.
It isn't anywhere near as good. It is quite literally a backslide in quality/value that costs even more. Honestly If I could just get my deposit back on mine I would cancel it. I bought into the hype, and due to the fact I completly missed out on MM1 (was deployed at the time) I felt like I had to get in on mm2. Then it turned out to be half assed version of modern masters.
Yes there are lots of good cards, sadly there is so much jank compared to original one. Honestly at 10$ a pack >1$ rares hurts. But the thing that hurts more, is the shear amount of crap that is either strictly for kitchen table magic, or just bad EDH reprints.
Hell if it was good EDH reprints I might consider getting into that.
Its like posting a tier 3 modern deck with some legacy cards for extra power in legacy subforum and asking is it competitive.
The response would probably be something along the lines of "Nope your in blue, get force of wills so you don't loose to turn 0 flash-hulk dude"
I mean that a good bit of the reprints are strictly for EDH or Kitchen Table magic. I mean mulldrifter? That sees play in what? Animar Combo?
Aside from that, with at best a 30$ price tag for draft I don't see this being opened much except by big companies that have enough capital to invest in enough boxes that they end up making value off Bobs, Goys, Cryptics, and Moxs...
That is kind of how we feel.
We all excpected Modern Masters 2 : Bigger, Better, and Jammed full of value. What we got was modern Modern Masters 1/2 jammed full of bomb ass mythics and like 5 commons you wouldn't shut up about, but the rest is just for casuals.
I don't think this deck would be good in standard. It is hilariously bad. If you asked me to look at it at fnm I would have to bite me tounge to keep from laughing. If you want to build a deck to make use of detain for kitchen table games. Through a few restore angel and cloudshofts in there. Maybe some paths to exile and more land.
What about counterflux?
Or ornithopter?
I could go on. Its not hard to find cheaper stuff that actually see a play in modern
If you want to do reprints for commander fine make a commander supplemental product that comes in boosters.
Yeah all 249 pages. Heck from time I skim back through the older posts.
I would recommend starting around page 220 ish working forward. That is the most up to date information.
But you really need to be able to use your own critical thinking skills and judgement to be able to understand what to do, when, and why.
The question to ask really should be "Why is this card good against burn not, What cards should I side in the mirror." Why is this card good against Jund, how can I best utilize it etc.
Yeah you can't get a handholding crash course in burn. You learn burn by playing burn. Burn is a mindset, burn is a lifestyle choice. Burn is different than any other magic deck archetype. Burn is not aggro. Burn is like a combination of control, mind****, and kill em faster.
That said, burn really only looses to combo decks that are faster than you, and lifegain. But if you are careful you can still win these games.
Now on to the G vs B splash. Green is superior nuff said. Black gave us rakdos charm and bump when we needed that. In todays meta, Atarka's and Revelry are better.
White is the one color I'd never loose. Sideboard stuff is too good.
Yeah. It seems like the EDH players at my store prefer the KMC or Ultrapro sleeves.
