The End of an Era

The sweeping assumptions that no one cares if cards like dual lands are reprinted is pretty preposterous, I doubt there are many players that wouldn't jam underground seas in with their watery graves if they had them. The assumption that most commander players are hyper casuals that would settle for playing subpar cards is also not true. There are a lot of really new and/casual players, but I know at my LGS's, most people are constantly putting money into their decks or trying to trade up to improve the efficiency of their mana bases.

I'm not even that boiled about dual lands or ridiculous cards like tabernacle.... I'm annoyed that cards like Academy Rector, Gaea's Cradle, Serra's Sanctum, Volrath's Stronghold, Grim Monolith, Power Artifact, Nether Void, Invoke Prejudice, Palinchron, Gate to Phyrexia, Lifeline, Time Spiral, Lake of the Dead, Mox Diamond, Lion's Eye Diamond, etc that range from good to great in commander are starting to cost body parts.

Collectors aren't even the real problem, it's investors coming in to pump and dump. People that don't even play magic coming in to profit on the secondary market at the expense of players. A lot of these cards are either unique and irreplaceable or simply so much better at ramping then any cheaper counterparts that it would actually be frustrating at times to run them. I may be in the minority of players that actually have LGS's fire commander pods for prizes, but surely not the only one that likes playing with quality cards.

This card seems like it could be decent in commander, the sad part is a lot of the equipment in commander is boots, so a lot of the time it won't have a secondary effect. That being said, those times you steal a Sword of Feast and Famine or a Helm of the Host is going to be pretty great.

I think one of the more interesting uses for it is bouncing an arrested/pacified creature you control and then moving the aura onto their creature. Vulshok Battlemaster and Armory Automaton seem pretty hilarious with it too I suppose.

If you're that concerned about fogs, you'll run stuff to get around it like Leyline of Punishment or just more equipment.

Anyone who thinks the magic community as a whole is the most toxic is clearly not familiar with the rabid fan community of Rick and Morty, which even the producers are forced to distance themselves from (remember the sauce incident?). Aside from that, the League of Legends community still stands as one of the most toxic I've ever dealt with personally. Yes, there are a few really toxic individuals who form sexist/racist groups and get followings sometimes in the magic community, but Wizards has actually stepped up and really started to fight back against the blatant ones (the Sprinkle incident is a good example, it's a shame she felt she had to remove herself from the community before it was handled though). People are toxic everywhere though, it's nothing that any one community has a monopoly on.

As a pure commander player, it feels like we got a second set this year Smile

The prices on the singles are huge though compared to other recent sets. Arena Rector is starting at €20 on MCM right now. I get that it's a good card and €10 would be totally fine but €20? All the normal playable rares that are somewhat playable start at €4. These prices really need to come down, or i'm skipping it entirely. I also expect to want some core 19 and commander stuff and unfortunately I don't make as much as wizards would want me to :p

Don't preorder then. Wait until people start cracking boxes and drafting the set to buy singles. Of course, you run the risk of a card like rector getting even MORE popular and more expensive. I think it's a safe bet that the rector won't really drop much below where it's at... turns out rector for walkers is pretty good and appealing to a wide variety of players. Anything remotely playable in commander will be getting targeted for preorder right now, I wouldn't even bother. That being said, prices on most cards won't stay high as the packs are just standard-priced packs and not masters or anything.

Only 1 godo per attack pause though. (Until you swing for win. Get fogged and then get wreaked for having no blockers. (Or just 1)

Pretty sure all those Godos can fetch a Hammer of Nazahn, then start throwing equipment onto the original (including a haste piece) and give it vigilance and an Argentum Armor to wreck everyone anyways.

People not caring about the reserved list cards used to be pretty common. Nowadays, more and more people are playing commander as investors buyout RL staples. Everyone I've talked to about the RL at both my LGS's is over it. Even the guy with a tabernacle who just bought a Mishra's workshop before it spiked again (and runs LED, alpha duals, etc).

Cards like grim monolith and academy rector should not be half of what they are.

As far as your tabernacle suggestion... the same people that would be upset by a reprint would be upset at the sacrifice addendum on a functional reprint.

The RL is 905 garbage, cards that nobody cares about at all. The remaining 10%, though are cards that are literally irreplacable.

Here i highly disagree. Take a look at the new battlebound lands. Stick 2 Landtypes to them, and you have viable duallands for commander.
Stick a similar duel player clause on them, and you have vial duallands for legacy.

Take the tabernacle and replace the destroy effect with a sacrifice effect, and you have a functional different card that does the same in 90% of the decks.

And why not do one for just 2W? yes, it would be easier splashable, but if that effect for that price were so important, they could do it.

I do belive wizards could easily replace reserved list cards. But they simply have no intrest in doing so. Allowing more people to play legacy only means allowing more people to not spend money on magic for playing beside some start investement. That is what wizards have no intrest in doing.
They want you to spend money again and again, not once and then a small upkeep cost each year.

Thats why i think the reserved list discussion is the wrong discussion. Why we don´t get cards to replace the reserved list cards is the question.

    I think you missed part of your quote;

You can't forget that it's not just reprints that are forbidden by the RL, it's also functional reprints.

A tabernacle with sacrifice or a spirit for 2W is literally a functional reprint that is forbidden by the RL as written.

Allowing more people to play legacy only means allowing more people to not spend money on magic for playing beside some start investement. That is what wizards have no intrest in doing.
They want you to spend money again and again, not once and then a small upkeep cost each year.

I disagree on this. If this were the case, modern masters staples like fetchlands surely wouldn't be worth what they are by now. They could print dual lands over and over again and they'd still sell sets. Tossing in occasional cards like tabernacle, cradle or chains would only drive those sales harder. Nope, pretty much the only thing the RL is doing right now is letting non-players profit off players currently.

I'm sorry some of you guys missed the boat on Legacy and Vintage. I guess it kind of sucks but you aren't being punished and Wizards doesn't have an obligation to help players enter dying unpopular formats. Besides there are plenty of other ways to play Magic that don't involve Wizards reprinting cards the majority of the player base don't enjoy playing with and that don't involve explicitly breaking a promise.

Cards like Tabernacle are such an outlier in formats like Commander it's hardly worth mentioning. The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale isn't even played in 1/10th of 1% of Commander decks.

I would hardly call commander a dying and unpopular format. No one has any idea how things would shake out for Legacy and Vintage if RL cards were reprinted, surely it would see some increased interest at least, but that's not really a primary concern. Pretty sure the reason Tabernacle isn't in more decks is literally because its always been a $500+ card since commander started to become really popular. It seems like an almost auto include in any sort of creature-light control deck and/or decks like super friends. People don't even bother putting it in lists because it's so unrealistically expensive. Cards like Academy Rector, Serra's Sanctum and Gaea's Cradle are more problematic to be getting more expensive honestly because they are super strong in commander.

This archetype is intriguing. If we're speaking 1v1, I feel like the deck needs to be able to play a strong early game and ignore synergies with Muldrotha.

It's not, this is being built for multiplayer. The energy stuff is ignored because you either run it all, or none of it. Frankly, none of the energy stuff really impresses me in multiplayer. Even with Aetherworks Marvel unbanned I just can't justify running it in multi.

Merfolk Branchwalker and Jadelight Ranger aren't BAD cards, but in a multiplayer environment I just can't justify putting them in where I can hope they hit value on top deck because they themselves are fairly underwhelming. Deadeye Tracker at least has the appeal of being repeatable and also grave-hate.

So, I have been really playing magic since Tempest came out. I was in middle school at the time and couldn't really buy much. My parents were of the mindset that the cards would be worthless over time and wouldn't buy me anything terribly expensive, just sealed product. Cut to a few years ago when I finally had enough money to really start picking up those higher dollar cards I wanted. I have a fair collection from over the years, and have gotten lucky on discovering old worthless cards that spiked.

I don't kid myself, I have no interest in vintage or legacy whether the cards were available or not. What I do play is commander and do so in an environment where it is 4-man pods for prizes. This means no proxies. So now that I'm in the market for cards like cradle and such, I find myself in the midst of mad buyouts. I no longer can snag dual lands, cradle, even cards like Serra's Sanctum for a reasonable price anymore. These prices are absolutely insane, and anyone that isn't a big money investor or business is not going to be snagging most of these anymore. I find this is starting to create a real power gap in commander as more and more people enter the format. Suddenly cards like Tabernacle and Mox Diamond/LED immediately cause resentment at the table among newer players.

I understand the purpose and the intent of the original reserved list as a safety net when they printed chronicles and upset a large portion of invested players at the time. The game was in a bad spot and they couldn't afford to lose the support. Things have changed pretty dramatically since then. The people that would be most upset by changes to the reserved list would definitely be collectors and investors, who likely haven't supported the game directly for decades dealing solely on the secondary market. Now, while the company made this promise to keep the collector side happy, we find ourselves in an interesting position where one of the most popular formats is becoming more and more outrageously expensive with each passing month. I am totally on board with keeping power nine on reserved list and never reprinting them for history's sake, and keeping the most iconic cards in magic as the true collector's items. I, however, find it harder and harder to agree with the upholding of the reserved list as I watch more and more investors buyout older cards for the sole purpose of causing artificial price inflation to fatten their wallets at the expense of actual players. I really feel Hasbro/Wizards need to step down and reevaluate their reprint policy on the reserved list. I think masterpieces and FTV sets were a great way to reprint said cards, and was fairly annoyed when there was backlash over the premium reprints.

We're at the point where it's starting to become investors and collectors vs players who actively support the game. Hell, with all the fakes getting printed of these older cards, I think a lot of people would be happier buying newer versions with the stamp on them and such.

Have you ever tried talking to the other players about this?

Oh yeah, multiple times. I tried to even get them to build decks around the variants that were tailored to that type of gameplay, but people still play crap like Locust God and Zur or pillowforts.

I kind of hate variant commander like "kingdoms" and "sheriffs vs outlaws". Whenever the group wants to play one of these variants I play a deck that ignores the special rules and just combos out or whatever or I'll take out everyone that doesn't have a face card showing, etc. Nobody has specific decks for these types of things, so it usually ends up as a 2 hour stalemate otherwise. I just find it annoying to implement these special rules which actually don't really impact the game much when you just win without interaction anyways.

Usually what happens to mono blue when mana maze is out is that multi color players will play spells to bait out your one counter for the turn. I would definitely play laboratory over it in here.
