If you are at the point of playing with God-Pharaoh's Gift, why not go one step further and try Champion of Wits? It's literally Snapcaster Mage flashback Careful Study, and with Grand Architect it's like a pseudo-Brainstorm. Eternalizing is even better with it. I know some of you are complaining about Master of Etherium, maybe you can test Champion?

It's good. Affinity, Eldrazi variants, Tron, Lantern, Tezz, Chalice. Won't hurt to have one or two in the board.

I can imagine that BGx is really solid for us. We're basically a Twin deck they can't stop if we combo out, and we run PiF so hand attack is not too big of a deal. However if it's a really good start for them it could turn out bad (and we've all experienced the amazing starts before)

Burn can be bad if we're set back too much, and you can be sure it'll find it's foothold in Modern again with Dredge out of the way. Same with Affinity, but I feel like we can run Affinity to the ground.

And then there's the potential decks that look to gain a lot from this B&R and the new set. Tempo decks might be on the rise again with Delver+YP losing a bit of it's competitive edge and the hyper aggro decks being stifled. Faeries and UWx flash could potentially be big winners, and we need to leverage a good deal of card velocity and counterspell potential to fight back on the stack.

I think for all of these we can gain from something similar to Monastery Siege. Maybe not at this mana cost but something that allows us to hinder Burn and Jund's ideal gameplan to give us an opening and can double as a resource against tempo and maybe control decks.

Tron is - well - Tron. Sometimes they just have it all, sometimes they don't and still manage to seem like they have it all. It's possible that moving forward we can use Blood Moon like what was stated but damn if that doesn't hurt. Other than that it feels like the only way to efficiently combat it is more counters and more Stony Silence out of the board. Still trying to form a URb version of the deck with hand attack to increase our margin against Tron while giving us access to - what do you know - Fatal Push to hit Jund's creatures and anything annoying (I'm actually thinking that DnT/Hatebears/Knightfall might see more play in the new meta, so I'm just trying to think of a head start)

Infect and Suicide decks are going to really feel the hurt with no Probe to look at hands for information. If they ever pass the turn to us, immediately throw something at their guy main phase. They will have to respond to save it if they aren't prepared with a second option, so that sets them back, and heaven forbid if we can back it up with a counterspell.

I never actually had any real testing against it, but how are we against Bant Eldrazi? We just flat out run them over if they don't have an amazing start, right? They could come out with like a Chalice or a Worship so we could use a bounce spell or two.

Everything else is more or less the same or fits into the mold of what I talked about. Either control decks or combos that are slower than us. I'm not sure why, I just don't really lose to Ad Nauseam, so maybe I am missing something about it that could be bad for us. I feel like Scapeshift isn't a big problem for us, either. The other Company decks like Abzan or even KikiChord also feel just slow enough. Maybe if they play more bullets that disrupt us I can see them edging out but I don't think anyone will be expecting Storm to be sitting across from them.

Especially with all the press this B&R is getting. Literally everyone on the internet is saying that Storm is dead, but here we are not even really missing Probe too much. If anything, the hyperaggro decks were some of our most comfortable matchups. No tricks, nothing to play around, just race, and we typically had the tools to slow them down for even a single turn.

I hope everyone continues to say RIP STORM so we can come in extremely under-the-radar.

    Probably 4 Stony Silence.

I would say 4 Suppression Field but everyone gets hit by Suppression Field, even us.

It actually isn't that bad to play a lot of Stony Silence, moving forward I think Affinity will recover a lot of lost ground and Lantern and Tezz will feel less pressure.

Silence can also be pretty good, but that's more of an oddity than anything. There's no efficient and cheap land destruction we can properly use so that option is probably not going to pan out well. Ideally hand attack is good for picking and choosing which threats they have. Karn can destroy us but Ugin is less of an issue. Ulamog can smoke us and TKS can be brutal. We don't mind OStone.

Edit: if Probe was still legal, Meddling Mage would be really good.

The answer is most likely more counters. Tron normally pivots the game around resolving one card, so maybe packing more counters can be good not only for Tron but for the tempo and control decks that will see more activity from the new B&R. Maybe in tandem with Baral? One mana Mana Leak and Remand with a loot seems very swingy.

RIP Probe you will be missed.

Wizards keeps finding ways to hate on Storm in Modern.

Baral seems okay, I think I'll fit in like another draw spell and a 2nd Spell Pierce before trying him out though. 1U Mancer would help out a lot though, so maybe he needs to be worked in on a different angle. I really like the Goryo idea by zeta390, opting for black for protection in TSeize and Inquisition can be good for early interaction and opening the path. Maybe that could be an angle to work in Baral. What are some black spells that would be sick if they cost 1 less to cast?

Hey guys, I'm not a new face but it's been a really long time since I've picked up a deck like this and I have to say:

Wow, this current iteration that Kathal is working on is really something special.

This deck, when it gets even half of the right cards, is fast. It's quick due to Homonculus and like Hakanzo said, the deck works well together in all angles. The Homonculus helps with the storm combo, the rituals for the combo alternate to help burst out with Mentor (which Modern still hasn't broken yet), the Prowess creatures are resilient in a niche way, the combo is light and reliant on a lot less cards than previously, good mix of permission and removal, permission doubles as protection while removal can be recycled with PiF and Revive+Snap. The combo is very modular due to the flexible but less powerful pieces and can afford to take a shortcut with Bolts or damage accrued from combat.

I like it. It's refreshing to see a deck flow like this and be so simple and methodical in it's approach.

I'll be messing around with it lots, as the rest of Modern has become boring to me. I've seen it all up to this point and the format stopped being interesting to me. Nothing new and special is being developed except for this and Cherri0s+Sram, and I'm more enticed by this.

I'll be immediately switching Docent for Niblis of Frost. I think Mentor can handle that kind of job well, maybe we need to tweak the deck a bit to make him really shine as a true alternate. I feel like this deck can utilize the Frost to take more control of the board in this meta where even the midrange decks are planning on going wide. It doesn't survive Bolt on it's own but it costs a mana less, and I might try to help it out with a few tweaks, namely Unsubstantiate +1 and Remand -1. I'll also be trying dumb things, much like I normally do.

Is Stubborn Denial ferocious if we have a flipped Homonculus? It gets to 4 off of prowess and then Denial resolves at ferocious, does it not? (also works with Niblis of Frost if so which is sweet). I haven't played with ferocious so I wouldn't know.

Good too see such work being done. Excited to see what can be done with this idea.

EDIT: If there ever was a deck that could actually do well with Delay its probably this deck.
    Spawning Breath is silly.

I know how much of a combo junky Lord Hazanko is, so to see him jump on board with this deck is basically a sign.

I've also been loving the MM version of the deck. Often times I left like TtB was too slow and lended ourselves to being too slow to beat out Tron.

Taigam's Scheming is really insane in this deck.

Deck is pretty good. I too was playing with this combo when the idea was first introduced but thought it wasn't great. It's a pleasant feeling to come back to it.

EDIT: I'm still shuffling around numbers in my list. Looks really close to Lord Hazanko's list, still bouncing around Lightning Axe and Thoughtseize.

If the tap out plan is to board in Duress, playing with some number of Marsh Flats is better than Flooded Strand. I'm doing the same and I'm on three Marsh Flats and two Flooded Strand. I'm lap not playing tap out and am running 2 Negate and 1 Dispel, so my experiences are definitely different, but I've been able to fire off turn one Duress very easily without bolting myself most games.

I also really hate GftT with a burning passion.

I've tried Murderous Cut but man does it hurt to play that card early.

I've been messing around with Dismember and Lightning Axe. I like them a lot, I'm leaning towards Lightning Axe more these days due to its slight utility to discard a Loam or Bloodghast and help us set up for a good turn for the first half of the game. It's also a decent draw off the top late as we can most likely always cast it for one mana and discard Squee or a land or a dredger.

Still looking for some new solutions to removal. Mainly looking at Beast Within and Dreadbore.

Woah, surprised to see this thread have a resurgence of activity.

When shadowgripper is back then you know it's serious business.

Anyone have an updated deck list I can start fresh from? Seems like we got some new developments and I've been out of the deck for a long while.

I feel like the deck is well positioned in the meta. The meta is speeding up and decks are packing more 1 and
2 mana interaction, which this deck bullies it way through.

Also sick tech on the Grave Titan loop. I wonder what else we can break...

Hey Exatraz. Thanks for your work in Emeria Titan. Sucks to hear about your situation.

I play both Titan and this deck, so I'm going to draw some analogies between both decks.

When Titan starts chaining reanimations together, it takes the opponent mostly out of the game. Our early game with this deck when considering Bloodghast, Loam, Looting, and Smallpox is very similar. These cards along with Darkblast, Crime, and Flame Jab are key in getting us as much advantage as we can early by making two land hands into top deck nightmares. We continue to use these cards repeatedly until we win, but the late game effect we get out of the cards are not as powerful as Sun Titan, Emeria, and Shephard. We sacrifice a powerful late game for earlier impact on the board state. (I think the late game for Pox is still pretty good)

It's hard to know for sure when Loam Pox is on the beat down plan or has to turtle up and play defensive. We have a metaphorical game plan but we don't always have to means to access every tool in the deck, and a lot is decided between one draw or taking a dredge. Therefore, every action is critical earlier, where as Titan just tries to do anything to ease into the mid game and make trades.

Since Loam Pox can't get back enchantments or instant/sorceries from the graveyard with no Titan or Snapcaster, every actual draw for a card is important. There are no cards that get us immediate card advantage like Gifts or Titan, all we have to work with is Loam, and that's if we even want it (I find that I don't want three lands until the mid game, or if you have some insane start like T1 Looting, T2Smallpox, T3 Infestation trigger Bloodghast)

I feel the same as you where sometimes the choice between numerous options are hard to make as you don't know what the opponent has in hand and don't have perfect information. Discerning what is the correct play is very difficult for this deck because we have a liquid game plan and can make any play out deck allows us to make. With tools like Ghost Quarter, Raven's Crime, and Smallpox, it's difficult to construct a plan of attack that leads to a winning scenario because the outcomes are not stable. I can take Affinity and know what is most likely in the future for me based on my opening hand. This deck is very hard to predict and choose which path to take, and its one of the reasons why I love it. The deck rewards insight and intuition and constructing decision trees for a deck with a fairly liquid end game.

Hope you get back into Titan. It looks like people are arguing about the Tron matchup without you.

I played different builds of the deck, and I have a few words.

This deck is hilariously fun. It's also hilariously good in the right circumstances, but your hand needs to be sculpted around it. I have had games where I fizzle after 12 minutes of stacking spells and games where I land a Dictate, have it be targeted by a Chord into Reclamation Sage, Beast Within, and a Qasali Pridemage activation and still win by stacking Early Harvest, Early Harvest, Reality Spasm, Zenith to draw 23 and land another Dictate.

This deck seems to be a turn too slow most games. Devastation Tide is nice but when you're only drawing one card a turn with nothing else in hand it doesn't do much except stall your opponents game plan for a turn. I feel like we need a higher density of draw spells and more Merchant Scroll or Zenith. Many games I had Dictate and untap effects and still could not dig deep enough to find a Zenith.

Zenith is incredibly important as it draws us cards. It's good in the midgame and its essential when we go off. Memory's Journey is a card that works incredibly well with it and I would play something like 3 Merchant Scroll, another blue instant for utility, and another Zenith.

I really like LtGlitter's build the most. It's straight to the point and it already has some good ideas that I think are worth playing with, like a mainboard Cyclonic Rift that is fetchable with Scroll.

Scroll can get us Determined as well, and its not the best card ever when it's not relevant, so I'd go down to 2 or 3. I like Edge of Autumn, once we have two Dictates, Search for Tomorrow is free, which allows us to sac the lands we get to cycle Edge. The cards thin out our library of lands and helps us dig into our library belly a couple of cards.

What would I cut to add the Scrolls and other stuff? I'd start with some number of Determined. I feel like it's worse than Edge of Autumn during the combo and only useful in certain matchups. I often boarded it out immediately. If we need one, we can fetch it with Scroll. I'd also cut a Reality Spasm, as it sucks to draw it when you don't need it and are looking for something else, and the one copy is fetchable with Scroll. I might also shuffle around the draw spell count to accomodate some number of "dig 5" like Taigem's Scheming or Peer Through Depths. Not a set, but maybe 2. They help mid combo heavily and can be used if you know if you need something specifically to sculpt your hand.

I love how Early Harvest is an instant.

As for the sideboard, I really like the idea of the Research coverage for Slaughter Games and Surgical, but I feel like it may not be necessary, and the slots could potentially be used for more "creature deck" hate, like more Fogs or life gain. Maybe we can use the ramp we get to side in value creatures like Elderscale Wurm, Hornet Queen, Tree of Redemption, or Greenwarden of Murasa or something dumb like that to help with certain matchups, as game two our opponent will most likely side out their removal.

I have no idea what Gaea's Blessing is for but it won me a game vs a mill deck, so it has my vote.

Time Reversal vs Ugin's Insight vs any other draw x for five mana card:

Time Reversal is a card I can appreciate as it can surge us into victory, but it's often times either really dead or really good, and I have mixed feelings about it. Insight however is just flat out good. Even draw 3 is fairly good, and with a Dictate out it digs us deeper than Dig Through Time. I get why Reversal is good but when you don't need it, it's a dead draw. It feels super bad to draw your new seven and see Search, land, land, Edge, Sleight, Determined, Spasm. However it has won me a few games on its own, and the value of the card is quite obvious, but whether or not we need it is questionable. Should we devote these slots to cards that just draw is deeper into our library or is Timetwister a necessity for this deck?

I'm loving the deck so far, especially since I shelled out $50 for the entire deck in paper and now have a second deck to mess around with. I have all four different printing a of Early Harvest, 2 French Khans Anticipates and 2 BFZ copies, 4 Future Sight Edges to say "Tarmogoy-oh wait", 3 different Sleights, white bordered Dragon's Claws, different basics with some being white bordered and a full art from Zendikar for each, the whole shebang.

I'll be testing out 3 Merchant Scroll, 2 Zenith, and Trade Routes. I'll also plug in anything else I think of in the next post.

    Deck is a riot.
