Back to the game after a very long time, been reading up, read a lot of the Primers here, watched a lot of the Theros PT and generally been looking over the cards for Standard. I am looking at building either a devotion to black or a "red deck wins" since, from way back, I have always been partial to mono black plus the new devotion mechanic is fun and I like the fast game play of a direct damage red deck. Which of these would be easier to pick up and play (going to my first FNM next week hopefully) and which would be more affordable to build out of the gate?

    Thanks!

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure that buying stuff from RtR right now would not be a waste since most people around here only really play Standard and so my only only starting investment was a box of Theros.

At what point will the RtR block be rotated out of standard. I am coming back to magic after over a decade and am a little confused at this. Will it go away a set at at time, or is there a point where the entire block is just removed?

Well...... it could eat your wallet either way lol. The game is not cheap but the best plan is getting some experience and knowing what you like to play. Trying to play them like you have to have EVERY deck out there is generally a bad idea. Knowing what color combinations you like and what style of play you like can mean saving a lot of $$$ on the long term. Just so long as you dont jump from deck to deck or try to create everythign out there..... thats how you hurt your wallet.

I always preferred to play mono and dislike blue and white. I would say out of the gate that puts down a lot of limits.

The last time I bought a magic card was in 00 or 01. I was a "cardboard crack" addict of the late 90s and played sooo many ccg/tcg at the time but eventually just did not have anyone to play with anymore and sometime during college I sold all my old cards since they were just collecting dust.

Yesterday I broke my own taboo and bought a box of Theros and plan on going to Friday Night Magic at my local shop next week.

Either this is going to be great, or a horrible idea that will eat my wallet.
